The girl looks Dominican, she should know this. And what I'm saying about colony, I used the word 'tried' as Santo Domingo was the third attempt. First there was Navidad, secondly Isabella, on the North of the island. Both unsuccessful. He moved South, and so began the third attempt, Santo Domingo. If these videos are created to tell us some history and appear full of knowledge, then they should at least get their facts correct.

Well if she was a native dominican it would be very unlikely she had blonde hair and blue eyes. She is unlikely to have a very large bridge in her nose, it would also be unlikely for her to have very straight hair. Of course there are exceptions, she appears of mixed race, she has the cute little dominican nose etc. (Generally pretty). You can try to deal the 'race' card, but it doesn't work on me. I'm a white man married to a black woman, we aren't afraid to talk of cultural differences.

In Britain we have black british people, my Dominican wife is black, she is a British citizen, so she IS British. However most sensible people would agree she does not 'look' like a native Brit. You don't get a tan like hers and curly afro hair by originating from an island close to the north pole! You're very thick - so would you say an African looks like a Scandinavian?

It isn't ignorant to describe a look. I keep saying every culture will have exceptions, but like it or not we are all 'classed', and those classes do not label us a bad or a good person. I am "white caucasian" I would not mind if a Nigerian asked me where I was from. It would be normal for him to expect me to be foreign. Although in effect I could be Nigerian - I would not consider him ignorant for thinking I was not.

Race? I wouldn't say 3. I would say 1. We are all homo sapiens. You could be Black or White or one of a thousand sub-species - but you're still a homo sapien. To make things easier we generally break this down to 3 types - just for descriptive purposes, Mongoloids, Caucasians and Negros. As anything we describe, our personal descriptions are subjective. Its this describing you are uncomfortable with. How you accept a description is down to you, however I've only been positive about Dominicans.

Funny how you claimed to have tied me into knots regarding the race issues. You don't seem to understand that there are 3 mains races, which is why I can "sweep" all "whites" and "asians" together. Between Chinese and Japanese is easy, its in the shape of the eyes and quite often facial shapes. I dated a Chinese girl whilst being a student. In Britain they call themselves BBCs (British Born Chinese). It was her who taught me the difference - and now spotting them is simple. She also taught me just within China differences exist - its a huge place. Like all comments here this is general - exceptions always exist.
I cannot speak for natives of the other places, I have no experience.

I've heard similar comparisons amongst Dominicans and Puerto-Ricans. DR having wider noses and PR having narrow noses. However I think you'll agree that these things are not strong points for clarification of categorization of someones nationality, no ?

Depends - its harder to 'guess' when talking of nations, but guessing regions or generally where on a planet someone originates or as family heritage to is much easier. Nations are only man-made lines.
Anyway, my first post was to state Columbus didn't land in DR first.
However I got so many thumbs down for that, people either don't know their history or just don't care to. Its amazing really.

Its called study - thick shit.
He first landed somewhere that still remains unknown- in the Bahamas though.
Then he found Cuba, then Hispaniola, (present day Haiti/DR). Here (Haiti) he established a small camp called Navidad. He then went back to Spain - returning to find his camp destroyed. He then built Isabela on the northern coast of DR, this was also destroyed. He then finally went south, 3rd time lucky, and created Santo Domingo.
So stop bitching and learn. The girl in the video is wrong.

He basically thought he landed in India and called them Indians..he died not knowing where the hell he landed really. I'm not from the Caribbean - although I have an interest in its history and people (if thats okay with you). My wife is Dominican and my daughter was born in Santo Domingo. You may not care 'sweetie' but others do, even today people are trying to solve the mystery of the exact route, we know the dates, but not where he touched down first. No one here is discussing native genocide.
Stop stating the obvious "you weren't there" we all know this - thats exactly why its a mystery stupid.

FACT: Columbus - it wasn't the first place he visited in the New World, he landed somewhere in the Bahamas (no one knows where exactly) then found Cuba, and then Hispaniola (Haiti / Dominican Republic). She should have said, its the first place he tried to set up a colony.
