Here in the UK you have two options the first is self service which is good if you've got a basket or the other option is a normal checkout, oh and you don't have to check the barcodes for the cashier, I've never queued longer than about five minutes
As a fellow American, I would like to amend 74coneill stated about us. I believe that most rational Americans don't like waiting in line if the line is very long. However, there are unreasonable people in our country, as I'm sure there are in yours, that complain when there is even one person ahead of them in a grocery store line.
We Americans don't like waiting in "line" either. I work in an electronics store, and people are quick to bitch if they have to wait for more than a few minutes.
well if you're efficient then putting the barcode towards where the scanner will make it go faster but if the cash register person is taking the stuff faster then just throwing them up there will be quicker.

We do that to avoid workrelated health issues for the person that do the job.
Will be better in the long run for all of us

We just don't mind queuing. Well that depends on how long the queu is.
