I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. But I have to keep looking up the lyrics because I have no idea what's he's saying. Also does anyone know what the video is about?
This was my all time favorite song in 1985! And both of my brothers' too. Every time I listen, or watch the video, my memories of that year and that time are so incredibly vivid. Music so profound as this doesn't exist anymore, and may never again.
Just saw Level 42 in concert in Pittsburgh 2 days ago. I'm only 22 years old and was in a crowd of 40 - 50 year olds. A few approached us (my brother and I) and said it was great that someone from our generation appreciated quality music. Our dad made sure we listened to REAL bands. It's a shame that bands like this seldom exist anymore. It was a pleasure to see them in concert.
@radiotete1e2 I'm one of those 40 somethings that'll be seeing them in San Francisco this Friday. Taking my 16 year old son. Turn the next generation on to Level 42. Good on you for being open to music like this. Those were simpler times, I miss them.
its very sad to day you dont have to know how to sing to have a hit song and be a instant millionaire for instance lady ga ga or whatever shes called. bands like this are something we might never see agon not to forget THE VIDEO IT MENT SOMETHING IT WENT WHIT THE SONG LIKE A MINI MOVIE .they should take a page from the 80s it would be a better place
Just remeber this...all this people that are down 80's music just need to remeber that most of us (such as my self, i was born in 1983) was concieved off this music so if it was not for 80's music most of us probaly would not be here...lol...
Why the battle of rap versus brit pop versus such and such? The only thing promised in life is death and change! Old school hip hop was brilliant (KRS1), thought provoking (Public Enemy), Humorous (Biz Markie), and so much more. Today 75% of it is trash! Just as Hair bands went out with the on set of Grunge, Hip Hop too was done in by THE BIG $! Madonna's legacy can be stunted by the likes of an imitator (Gaga!) all because of suits. Such has become the music industry. Sad sad sad.
nothing will ever beat 70s or 80s music and this song is just on more of the thousands of examples why. sorry kids from today where is yer music gonna be in 20-30 yrs? keep rockin 70s and 80s, im so glad i was born in the 80s and am able to appreciate what music should be and was. too bad for todays generation theyll never be able to have what we did growin up unless they have parents who will culture them.
Never got much airplay where I lived but they showed this alot on VH1. I taped this among other songs on an old VHS tape and watched it alot till the tape went bad years ago. Thanks for posting this so I can relive those great memories again.
I agree, this was intelligent pop music with older musicians. You don't see musicians in their late 30s/early 40s doing top 20 videos anymore. Today's corporate-packaged bullshit caters to the lowest common denominator and is right in the fucking gutter. Good music television died after MTV Alternative Nation went off the year.
@getshorty75 You are so right. In the 70s and 80s you had people in their 30 and 40s making great music. Now it is all teenagers and twenty somethings.
Ah now this is music with such a great base line to it. A great catchy foot tapping song we all know remember and bought the 45 or 12 inch version of back in 86. And look no gangster rappers with guns knives home boyz selling drugs while doing a drive by shooting were needed to make this video. Its a shame music of today only promotes so much ego violence and all that is bad in the world. Bring back music like this. JUST BRING BACK THE 80'S...I lived them and miss those years so much.
@josez1 I truly truly doubt it. L 42 is top in all respects. All you have to do is to read the comments of people who did not grow up with them, and are at present, discovering them!!!! They are 2nd to NONE:
I grew up listening to Level, I even met my wife at a dance where this song was being played. Damn I'm getting old....Things made more sense in the 80s and this song illustrates that. If that means I am an old codger than so be it. I rather be old now and of had the great 80s music to live by than be young now and stuck with a roster of empty, soul-less music that says nothing to anyone.
I am in support of the uploader of this video. I want to know why "Vevo" has monopoly on just about EVERY video uploaded these days on YouTube? If "Something About You" was a popular song of the time, VEVO would swoop in and ban this vid.
What is VEVO to YouTube? That is something we all need to ask ourselves before its too late. Only "VEVOI" can upload modern day videos to YouTube. Why is this? I don't know. Thats a VERY good question indeed...........
This was when music was great not a sample in sight. Rap is only good when they use a hook from another artist. yeah some rap is good i'll give you that but most rap artist use samples from artist to give their song a riff that people will like because face it it's all talk, talk, talk......boring!!!
That's pretty stupid to blame Yo! MTV Raps for MTV going to shit. Everyone knows MTV was ruined because of those reality shows. By the way, Yo! MTV Raps was a good show.
Thank God for the Shazaam app. I was in a store today and heard this song being played over the speakers. The sweet nostalgia of 80s music swept over me. The Shazaam app helped me to find out the name of this song I recalled enjoying in the 80's. I immediately downloaded the song in itunes. There will never be a music era like the 80s again. There seemed to be a great pers. onal soundtrack for whatever was going on in your life. Music was much more global at that time. Lots of foreign bands.
chainbluelightning1, I love your comment. I am 42 now and I remember being in highschool when this song came out and I was 18 at the time. When I first heard it I thought it would stand the test of time. I think it did. The 80's was so great. So much of today's music just lacks soul (not all of it, but so much of it). Bring back the seventies and 80's when musicians wrote their music and actually performed it with their own instruments!!! 80's rules!
It's not wrong to be human, but it is wrong to abandon music like this for the flavorless bubblegum pop and I-should-be-in-a-damn-prison-cell gangster rap of today. At least I have my VHS tapes of this on MTV. It's always nineteen eighty something at my house.
@OldSchoolTracks10 I grew up with MTV since 1981 when the first video "Video killed the radio star" came on in August 1981. Martha Quinn was on there then. I miss the old days of new wave, punk, etc. Gone all gone. Sad isn't it?
@chainbluelightning1 Good points dude. I wish we all could just pick a certain time frame (mine is early 80's) to live in, that way we could all avoid this crap of today. I just can't even get into The Jonas Bros, and WTF is up with all these Vampires. Shit, The Lost Boys would crush the Twilight boys... I even miss my mullet and my El Camino ride. I mean, is it a truck or a car? come on man..... it was schweeeet
@bigdsears Yeah, a bit sick of Vampires now, both the weepy romantic kind and the badass goth punks who ride Harleys. Sometimes you'll get a writer who tries to be all sly and puts his weepy Romeo-with-fangs on a chopper so he can be some kind of undead James Dean. And remember when trucks were made of metal and looked like they could navigate any crater on the Moon? I mean, today they're made of plastic, but they still guzzle gas and oil, so the air is still thick with pollution. :/
@chainbluelightning1 "It`s always nineteen eighty something at my house"!!! Perfection. This just put the most genuine smile on my face and tons of happiness in my heart. Thank you.
@GroovySistah I'm glad I made you happy. Makes me want to leave more comments. :) Is it always nineteen eighty something at your house, or do you ever break down and allow the 90s in? Sometimes I'll go early 90s, sometimes late 70s, but I gotta say, the 21st Century and all its garbage does not have a key to the front door. Facebook and reality TV (cringes). That's all I have to say about the 21st Century.
@chainbluelightning1 Yeah, you should definitely leave more comments because you just hit the spot with what you say and how you say it. "... the 21st Century and all its garbage does not have a key to the front door." is another good one :) It is mostly nineteen eighty something at my house as well. I am not speaking of music only but movies and fashion also. And yes, I do let other decades to enter the house.
@chainbluelightning1 how you gonna discrminate on a certain kind of music and no one else cant do the same so what if i dont like that satin praticing metal music crap fuck youu!
@slubber They would be great to see live. I haven't seen anyone live since Aerosmith back in '99. Think they'll do a Steven Tyler and throw their jackets into the crowd?
@chainbluelightning1 It's not wrong to be human, but why must we take things for granted? Isn't it enough that we were granted great music? I shutter to think that only a portion of good music is left among us.
MTV was great when they used to play music on it!! Hey, do you remember when they used to show music videos? Why is it when something works well some arsehole comes along and changes things?
This song has been stuck in my head for a week, I've probably listened to it at least 50 times in the last two days. I was 8 when it came out :) Can't get enuff!
this dude could do a really scary clown or stalker lol....but i do love this song, i was only 5 when i came out....but i love 80's music. and thank you again for posting the original version.
I grew up in the 80's and miss my time then. This was one of the songs that take me back that direction...... I am now 40 and wish I could go back with what I know now....
I can't really put a finger on why I'm so fond of this song, but I just am....and I'm pretty sure that most of you feel the same way about it, too...a good song is a good song, period..no matter what "genre" people classify it under, and this is a good song!
@mjfbush ...damn, you're right! I was a teen when this came out, and loved it! I was always of the mind that it was something somewhat more sinister, though.... in fact, I'd get chills when he roared—it seemed anguished to me, ghostly.... and therefore rather deep, in my young mind... but yeah, I see it now. Jealousy, definitely. (slappin my forehead) Thanks! lol...
@robbiesyohn uhhh dude MTV raps hit around 1988 at full force. MTV really started falling apart in the late eighties when they became genre centric. Focusing on hair bands, boy bands, and of course MTV rap. Everything became manufactured. Whereas in the early eighties they were just looking for different acts and creative sounds. That died in the late eighties.
@robbiesyohn Actually Yo! Raps came on in 1988. I find 1988-93 or so a great transition period for MTV; gradually going downhill. Even if classic MTV was still around, today's bad music just wouldn't cut it.
@robbiesyohn .... C'mon, man... "Yo!" had been on for a long time (since '88) when MTV, in my estimation, actually went to shit (completely) in late 1990, early 1991. It was showing signs of shittiness throughout 1990, but it finally just became unwatchable in 1991. Ironically, I'd give just about anything if it returned to its 1991 shittiness standard, rather than today's COMPLETELY INTOLERABLE mess. But you can't blame it on "Yo!" Grunge is what really killed it. That and greed. Just my 2c.
@robbiesyohn actually YO saved MTV-what killed MTV was Real World-after its success they went completely reality TV! do they even play videos anymore?
@helimech60 NO, it's mind frames like yours that destroy everything. This is so fucked! I came here, first video I chose when opening YOU TUBE, to listen to this brilliant song. Loved it since the 80's. I am a black women. Duran Duran is my favorite band in the world. I am 38 years old and the first thing I am confronted with is, not surprising, the racist rants of some PC troll! Last I checked trash comes in every color and LOTS of neighborhoos aren't top notched. Ignorance is so very sad.
@DooranDooran I'm sorry I left out one word in my first comment. And that was "welfare".I just stick to the facts mam.You have not seen the things I've seen with my own eyes, and yes,it comes in all colors.I've been around alot longer than you.I'm 43.Have a nice day.
@bluntedNcali: He's not a clown. He's dressed as a baggy-pants, old time burlesque comic; these guys would come on between the girls and distract the crowd before the next act came on.
OldSchoolTracks10 thank you soooooo much for this. I listened to this music in highschool and loved it. The best line in the song is write at the beginning: "Is it so wrong to be human after all..." great song. Thanks.
Thanks for posting this OFFICIAL video of this jam! I remember seeing this when it was on MTV in '85/'86 as a 10 years olg ang this "clown" creeped me out, esp. where he's out in the field as the lights dim out. Damn!!!
Especially as part of it was set on a train. They don't have carriages like this any more except on the continent. Much more comfortable than the airline style seating with hardly any leg room.
I love this song, track 14 on CD 1 (Ultimate collection)

@chainbluelightning1 It's not wrong to be human, but why must we take things for granted? Isn't it enough that we were granted great music? I shutter to think that only a portion of good music is left among us.

MTV was great when they used to play music on it!! Hey, do you remember when they used to show music videos? Why is it when something works well some arsehole comes along and changes things?

@Tarn1968 The clown symbolizes jealousy. Just watch the video and you'll figure it out.
mjfbush 1 year ago
@mjfbush ...damn, you're right! I was a teen when this came out, and loved it! I was always of the mind that it was something somewhat more sinister, though.... in fact, I'd get chills when he roared—it seemed anguished to me, ghostly.... and therefore rather deep, in my young mind... but yeah, I see it now. Jealousy, definitely. (slappin my forehead) Thanks! lol...

MTV rocked from 1981 to 1992. Then it went to shit because of Yo! MTV Raps garbage came on. That ruined it. Totally ruined it.
robbiesyohn 1 year ago 13
@robbiesyohn uhhh dude MTV raps hit around 1988 at full force. MTV really started falling apart in the late eighties when they became genre centric. Focusing on hair bands, boy bands, and of course MTV rap. Everything became manufactured. Whereas in the early eighties they were just looking for different acts and creative sounds. That died in the late eighties.
hospitalbedpan1 1 year ago 2
@robbiesyohn Actually Yo! Raps came on in 1988. I find 1988-93 or so a great transition period for MTV; gradually going downhill. Even if classic MTV was still around, today's bad music just wouldn't cut it.
pannoni1 1 year ago 2
@robbiesyohn .... C'mon, man... "Yo!" had been on for a long time (since '88) when MTV, in my estimation, actually went to shit (completely) in late 1990, early 1991. It was showing signs of shittiness throughout 1990, but it finally just became unwatchable in 1991. Ironically, I'd give just about anything if it returned to its 1991 shittiness standard, rather than today's COMPLETELY INTOLERABLE mess. But you can't blame it on "Yo!" Grunge is what really killed it. That and greed. Just my 2c.
Tre404 1 year ago
@robbiesyohn actually YO saved MTV-what killed MTV was Real World-after its success they went completely reality TV! do they even play videos anymore?

@robbiesyohn What do you expect from most black people.Drive thru a black neighborhood and see what it looks like. They destroy everything.
helimech60 1 year ago
@helimech60 NO, it's mind frames like yours that destroy everything. This is so fucked! I came here, first video I chose when opening YOU TUBE, to listen to this brilliant song. Loved it since the 80's. I am a black women. Duran Duran is my favorite band in the world. I am 38 years old and the first thing I am confronted with is, not surprising, the racist rants of some PC troll! Last I checked trash comes in every color and LOTS of neighborhoos aren't top notched. Ignorance is so very sad.
