@johnnyharpe I'm well aware of the 1960 election. Elections have been stolen for years. However, no other deceipt quite compares to what Nixon did. @dannyd1572 Wrong. All the 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights enumerate rights of THE PEOPLE over THE STATE. Period. Nowhere in there are rights given to the State.
@johnnyharpe The second ammendment gives the people the right to form a well-regulated Militia for a free state, which means that each person has the right to keep arms to ensure that their state is free from overtaking. Not that each person has the right to have their own stockpile in their basement.
@dannyd1572 Wrong. It merely lists the milita, which is US, as a reason for the individual's right to keep and bear arms. I says nothing about forming a miltia or so-called "stockpiles". He was a criminal, plain and simple. He was caught in illegal activity, his former administration members that went to jail (and those that didn't) have publicly stated he authorized a cover-up, even went so far as to plan a break-in on the GOP HQ to make it look like the Dems did it...recent tapes released reveal he asked his Chf of Staff, Alexander Haig, to burn the Oval Office tapes (he declined). as speeches go this is a real gem.......Watergate aside. this comment is about the speech and the man making it. 18 minutes, without notes, from the heart and real.........one of the top 5 speeches by a President in my mind. Given the circumstances surrounding him, all by his doing I agree but my God, what a wonderful display of speaking this is indeed!!
Nixon was a great President. In his first term, he was probably one of the best that we have ever had and one of the most accomplished. It is a shame that he got involved with the cover-up, like he did. He was a great orator and a smart politician. He rose from practically nothing to become the most powerful man in the world.
@SixthLordZach117; Nixon was a foreign policy genius, a very intelligent man.... but while he was very "intelligent", he really wasn't all that "smart". that's part of what led to his downfall.
lets first remember what the Presidency stands for...he is not god but he stand for a symbol of America and is suppose to display High Moral, integrity etc...part of the problem is we have moved away from having great men to vote for..the men now that run for president want the power that goes with the postion but do not know what a great man is.
The sad irony in what you are saying is that where it comes to serving as POTUS, effectiveness outweighs decency.
Look, Jimmy Carter was the most decent man ever to occupy the White House, at least during my lifetime. Unfortunately, aside from The Camp David Accord, he was almost totally ineffective as President.
no. not at all, i think that with the exception of Monica Lwensky...Clinton did an effective Job as President especially considering he was under attack from his enemies on day of his presidency.
What POTUS has not come under attack by the opposition?? Clinton promised the American people an administration that would"avoid the mere appearance of impropriety" Instead, he gave us one tacky spectacle after another. Clinton had his moral failings, but history has no choice but to record him as a very effective POTUS.
The irony about Nixon is that his legacy is something of an enigma. While campaigning as a conservative, many liberal programs were established during his administration.
Just as an aside, "hardrein101", it's nice to have a constructive discourse without the flaming, insults, vitriol, or vulgarities that find their way into so many controversial (and, quite sadly, even some noncontroversial Y/T threads.
Perhaps the most damaging effect Watergate had on us was that people became conditioned to the realization of corruption in government. The corruption was really nothing new. We saw it in LBJ's administration. Despite his moral failings, LBJ was also a very effective President. When we see the corruption that lead to 9-11, or Cheney's role in exposing the identity of a CIA operative as a means of political retaliation, the American sheeple just don't get too riled up about it anymore.
Right you are, Hardrein101!!...... which is why I stand firm in my beliefs that the crimes of Watergate pale in comparison to the crimes of Cheney / Bush... or for that matter, the criminal legacy of the Bush family. There was only one death that could be attributed to Watergate. Look at how many people died at the hands of Cheney / Bush.
thank you for agreeing with me but I don't want to donplay watergate because it left a bad stain on America and i think Nixion, while an itelligent man played fast and loose with the office of the President and let the power go to his head...he was a corupt politician..But lets all remember that this is not an easy position to have and is a tremdous amount of weight for one man to bare.
It's not really an issue of "downplaying" Watergate. The fact is that the administrations of JFK and LBJ engaged in covert operations for political purposes. Of course, Nixon's administration got caught.
For RMN, Watergate was a gnat in his ear. Vietnam, negotiations with the Soviets, as well as the social and cultural revolution taking place here in the U.S. were more pressing issues. Ironically, the elections were no big concern; no Democrat could have beat Nixon in 1972.
We can discuss without "debating". This seems to be an area of interest to you, and I would encourage you to explore it in further depth.
One problem was that RMN was a very intelligent man, but he wasn't very smart. He lived in a world of "enemies". Much as Don Quixote was at war with the windmills, Nixon considered himself at war with the forces who opposed him. Ironically, where his administration was concerned, he seemed to prefer working with Southern Democrats more than Republicans.
interesting Observation...again I can not give an indepth comment because other than watchin the Frost/Nixion movie i have very little to go on about Nixon. seemed to be a man who had strong beliefs but lived in his own world a bit.
"(Nixon) seemed to be a man who had strong beliefs but lived in his own world a bit."
Pt. 1
EXACTLY!! When Nixon assumed office, the social and cultural revolution here in The US was well under way. TV was making the world a much smaller place. Walter Cronkite had taken the bold step of not only reporting the events in Vietnam, but also stating that the war, as he saw it, could not be one. The space race was under way, the civil rights movement had become volatile.
The press and journalists in America were no longer simply reporting events in the world, they were also seeking to influence them. In RMN's eyes, this made them "the enemy". Hippies, scholars, anti-war protesters, Jews, Negroes, and academia were also "enemies". Consequently, Nixon shut off lines of communications with those people he should have been seeking to build bridges with, and he became isolated in The White House.
very well stated and a good Observation. Sounds if RMN should have never been elected Pres with these views. funny...i have left many comments on YT but never gotten so many responses.
I enjoy exchanging thoughts and perspectives with people. Actually, had it not been for Watergate, Nixon's legacy would have been quite different. He had one of the highest public approval ratings of any POTUS in history.
Show me a POTUS who was not dangerous, and I'll show you a POTUS who is ineffective, which in and of itself, leaves the nation in a very vulnerable, precarious, and dangerous position. In my lifetime, the most decent man to occupy The White House was Jimmy
Carter. A very decent man, but his decency is what blinded him to the dangers that we, as a nation, were facing. For all of his decency, he was equally ineffective.
His decency was what lead to the hostage crisis in Iran. That alone cost the US political capital in a world where the Soviet Union was still seeking world expansion, the middle East was becoming a tender box for trouble, our economy was faltering, and his ability to deal with Capitol Hill was essentially neutralized.
i dont that Jimmy Carter was efective at all was he a decent man very much so...but has a president he sucked...again, i think Clinton was a very effective pPresident...yes, he is wicked and sneaky but also Smart and a very goog speaker.
So, I'm a nutcase, iown?? I know you're very young, but go back and study The Nuremberg Trials held after WWII. Water boarding was considered a war crime, and former German military leaders were hanged for it. So, Cheney / Bush, who authorized water boarding are not war criminals?? This hypocrisy is part of the reason America is so disliked by people and leaders of other countries. Do a Google search on "Bush / Barry Seale". Educate yourself.
Important words. "Others may hate you, but those you hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then, you destroy yourself."
As we move forward into the instant gratification age, we will see more and more people be careless, disrespectful, and self indulgent. When someone acts that way to you, remember those words. It takes effort to be considerate and logical. Most don't expend that effort anymore because increasingly we don't need to. Don't get mad. Don't destroy yourself.
This is hilarious. Richard M. Nixon telling other people not to "get discourage, be petty or hate others." He should have followed that with, "Do an I say, not as I do."
I am a true Nixon fan. He was a great President, a great man, and one I looked up to. He got a raw deal what he did was child's play compared to the current thing in the White House. obooba is out to destroy our America.

He was an utter scoundrel who resigned so as not to be impeached. He deserved prison since we no longer hang for treason.May his memory rot and his name be blotted out from the Earth.
Nixon was from the old school, when the White House conducted covert operations, guided by "unwritten rules", in a cloak of silence. the social and cultural revolution in the US was at it's apogee, and those unwritten rules were changing.
RMN was too isolated from those changes to understand the full dynamics, or the degree of them.
While Nixon may have been, as some people say, "a scoundrel", in many respects, he was an effective President. History has shown him to be a flawed man, and rightfully so. History has also recorded his contributions and accomplishments
In my lifetime, Jimmy Carter was clearly the most decent man to occupy the Oval Office; unfortunately, he was equally ineffective as President.
nixon was as much a crook as our last persident Bush was and both were wrong in their actions..aarogant men who believe they can do whatever they want and then justify it..what a disrace!!!!!
Watergate was a tawdry spectacle compared to the crimes of Cheney / Bush. Watergate did not drag the American Sheeple into a war with a country that had absolutely nothing to do with the so-called "attacks" of 9/11.
you are so correct i agree that bush/cheney were allowed to get away with much to much and tarnished America's reputation..but lets not belittle what Nixon did because watergate also left an embarassing stain and was a gross misuse of the office of the President.
People are so inclined to put JFK and Obama on a pedestal. You don't think they lie? Nixon cared more for this country then either one of those two...and you can take that to the bank.
I don't think I can take anything a Republican say to the bank, because of the last 8 years with Duyba because it will come up as non suffient funds.......
The outsourcing in the 1950s was sort of a 'gift' to Japan, primarily, per the wishes of General MacArthur. "Made in Japan" was a joke, which, of course, became serious business in the late 60s and then turned into our national disgrace as China was fully "opened" per Nixon. We had thrown a few crumbs to Formosa and South Korea, the crumbs transforming into giant cookies of trade deficits after 1976. Every other country was 'opened'----the joke was on the American working man. Thanxx, Nixon.
slapdaddy is oo right bush is boderine but like 4 sure all the others i mean im only a teenager but if anyone should complain it is kids my age... were gunna pay 4 all this corruptness adn crap ass sitmlus bills
hell hes just as corrupt as any other politician.. id rather vote 4 the guy who got caught and says sorry than the guy who got away and lies.. bush, clinton, kerry, hitler, oboma etc.
He only said sorry when he had no other choice, it took him a very long time considering the seriousness of the offence in comparison to some of the others you mentioned.
So basically what you are saying is that you have learned absolutely f*** all about how government is supposed to work under the Constitution.
Richard Nixon is no different to any President over the last 100 years. They have all been working for a group of bankers since America handed over its entire soverign state many centuries ago. You think you are free? We have never been free. The Constitution you think we follow is not the one that was drafted by the founding fathers!
by the way asshole, i didnt watch any of the gay videos u sent me, america is the best country and always will be, your just wasting your time saying how america is so bad,
nobody cares about your political views, and you sure wont alter any of my opinions, so your just wasting your time
So, I guess you will be one of the crettens we scrape up off the ground from hunger.Remember this moment how u were warned because what use are you to anyone if ur dead.If u think government cares for you and will fix everything, then this shows your complete lack of education. This is especially so when you cant even use a full stop in your sentences. This is how dumb you are! There aint no dignity in being stupid. End of transmission.
Do you really think your heroes in sports will give a flying f*** about you when your banging on the doors of your local bank in 2008, while you eat insects off the ground to stay alive!.
All sports people should be just that, sports people .. Not celebrities who are paid vast sums of money from the stupid people like you who enter the gates to support them.
But then again you know no different because a mediocre education system leads you to believe in an insect like Nixon.
Yeah, that's the important part. Which one are you Dumb or Dumber! lol
I hope you have enough of your family left to attend your funeral post 2009. You are way in over your head here, so plez leave the building B4 you get squashed. Watch and learn or will your small uneducated brain allow it?

Albeit, Watergate was a disaster; but other than that ( name one president in the 20th century who didn't have their scandals). Richard Milhouse Nixon was a great president.
"Other than the crash landing in the Hudson River, the flight from Charlotte was great."
Other than Watergate, the second greatest Constitutional crisis in the history of the Presidency (second only to Bush using the 4th Amendment as a Kleenex)? Hilarious.
Nixon resigned six years before I was born and was a Republican as I'm a Democrat. The man had faults but he sure could deliver a speech. One of the greatest lines, most likely a result of reflecting where he went wrong... "...always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty; always remember, others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them.. and then, you destroy yourself."
He has had the lowest approval rating of any president, Bush runs a close second. He believed that as the president he could break any law. Under Nixon there was a spike in inflation and mortgage rates topped 20%.
Tragic. In my opinion Mr Nixon always put the country first. At the time McGovern was the most liberal piece of you know what to ever run for President (record broken by Mr Obama). Some of his minions may have taken liberties with "the rules" but Nixon still won 49 states fair and square. The American people spoke clearly. How often do we hear about how many states Mr Nixon won. Or how many Reagan won? I saw some idiot on Youtube claiming Obama had the biggest blowout ever, not even close
I met him in San Clemente. He and I literally tripped out on the fact that you can slightly see the curve of our own earth from the beach. He pointed that out to me. Pretty nice fellow.
I wonder many times what Nixon would say if he could see how far the Republican party has departed from the fundlemental principles in which he so deeply believed. Nixon came from the plain people and he always believed in them.
Actually the development of the party, whether for better or worse, has followed along a very steady line from the policies and agenda of Nixon to those of Ford and then Reagan and then Bush and then Bush Jr. You don't see that? If not, then where exactly was the break-off point (assuming there was just one)?
easily one of the best speeches of all time. Done almost entirely without notes, except the quote read from TR, which shows the side of Nixon not seen enough, his genius!!!
Wonderful, wonderful speech. greatness does come when you are really tested, when you take some knocks when sadness comes. You absolutely need to have been in the deepest valley to know how magnificent it is on the hightest mountain. Brillant!! Brillant stuff!!
The acclaimed Scottish psychiatrist Dr. Charles Follen McKim Maloney, a close friend of President Nixon, sent a bouqet of Zinnias to Pat Nixon following this speech.
Richard Nixon was, by far, one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had. He was a considerate, intelligent man, superior to any that preceded him and succeeded (or many) succeed him.
In an unrelated topic, I do not believe that Nixon had much to do with Watergate. I have a feeling that Republican lobbyists desired more information, and essentially cheated President Nixon out of his dignity and respect.
Had watergate never happened, Nixon would be considered one of the all time great presidents. Ending the war without defeat (until Ford blinked), China, arms control with the Soviet Union, the EPA, etc, etc.
You know...I've always had this opinion on Nixon, that he was one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, but I've been watching videos from his candidacy with JFK, and he really wasn't that bad, with his views and such. And going down the way he did, he may not have been one of the greatest presidents, but I think putting him down there with Bush is a very ignorant statement. He was in no way WORSE than Bush.

For RMN, Watergate was a gnat in his ear. Vietnam, negotiations with the Soviets, as well as the social and cultural revolution taking place here in the U.S. were more pressing issues. Ironically, the elections were no big concern; no Democrat could have beat Nixon in 1972.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
Nixon just wanted Watergate to go away. He did not order the break-in at Watergate. His mishandling of the cover-up was what did him in.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
was only 2rs old then so i dont know enough about water gat to rebutt or comment further.
hardrein101 2 years ago
We can discuss without "debating". This seems to be an area of interest to you, and I would encourage you to explore it in further depth.
One problem was that RMN was a very intelligent man, but he wasn't very smart. He lived in a world of "enemies". Much as Don Quixote was at war with the windmills, Nixon considered himself at war with the forces who opposed him. Ironically, where his administration was concerned, he seemed to prefer working with Southern Democrats more than Republicans.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
interesting Observation...again I can not give an indepth comment because other than watchin the Frost/Nixion movie i have very little to go on about Nixon. seemed to be a man who had strong beliefs but lived in his own world a bit.
hardrein101 2 years ago
@ hardrein101:
"(Nixon) seemed to be a man who had strong beliefs but lived in his own world a bit."
Pt. 1
EXACTLY!! When Nixon assumed office, the social and cultural revolution here in The US was well under way. TV was making the world a much smaller place. Walter Cronkite had taken the bold step of not only reporting the events in Vietnam, but also stating that the war, as he saw it, could not be one. The space race was under way, the civil rights movement had become volatile.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
Pt.2
The press and journalists in America were no longer simply reporting events in the world, they were also seeking to influence them. In RMN's eyes, this made them "the enemy". Hippies, scholars, anti-war protesters, Jews, Negroes, and academia were also "enemies". Consequently, Nixon shut off lines of communications with those people he should have been seeking to build bridges with, and he became isolated in The White House.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
very well stated and a good Observation. Sounds if RMN should have never been elected Pres with these views. funny...i have left many comments on YT but never gotten so many responses.
hardrein101 2 years ago
I enjoy exchanging thoughts and perspectives with people. Actually, had it not been for Watergate, Nixon's legacy would have been quite different. He had one of the highest public approval ratings of any POTUS in history.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
yes, but waterget taught us just how dangerous this man was.
hardrein101 2 years ago
But herein lies the wicked twist, Hardrein;
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
His decency was what lead to the hostage crisis in Iran. That alone cost the US political capital in a world where the Soviet Union was still seeking world expansion, the middle East was becoming a tender box for trouble, our economy was faltering, and his ability to deal with Capitol Hill was essentially neutralized.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
i dont that Jimmy Carter was efective at all was he a decent man very much so...but has a president he sucked...again, i think Clinton was a very effective pPresident...yes, he is wicked and sneaky but also Smart and a very goog speaker.

Nixon was no more of a scoundrel than LBJ,
JFK, or other President's that preceded him.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
While Nixon may have been, as some people say, "a scoundrel", in many respects, he was an effective President. History has shown him to be a flawed man, and rightfully so. History has also recorded his contributions and accomplishments
In my lifetime, Jimmy Carter was clearly the most decent man to occupy the Oval Office; unfortunately, he was equally ineffective as President.
BTW, I speak as a liberal Democrat.

Nixon resigned six years before I was born and was a Republican as I'm a Democrat. The man had faults but he sure could deliver a speech.

Actually the development of the party, whether for better or worse, has followed along a very steady line from the policies and agenda of Nixon to those of Ford and then Reagan and then Bush and then Bush Jr. You don't see that? Richard Nixon was, by far, one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had. He was a considerate, intelligent man, superior to any that preceded him and succeeded (or many) succeed him.
In an unrelated topic, I do not believe that Nixon had much to do with Watergate. I have a feeling that Republican lobbyists desired more information, and essentially cheated President Nixon out of his dignity and respect.
For shame.

I've wondered if John Dean possibly masterminded the break-ins at DNC.
Dean was obsessed with knowing about who was sleeping with whom, and The DNC was nothing but a clearing house for paper shuffling.
Still, travel arrangements, hotel reservations, and meetings were coordinated there.
I think that Dean may have thought that he could dig up some dirt in there.
