really nice version of this song, im currently in the process of trying to 'unlearn' bad habits. I have noticed a lot of old blues pickers keep the pinky planted on the body of the guitar while playing stuff like this. I see yours is floating [like mine does] you play a lot more stable than me with that floating hand, should I be bothered about that? or even consider it a bad habit, besides it dont matter if it sounds good right? hope that makes sense?
Hi Frank. Thanks for the comment. Re. the pinkie - I move between both camps. If it's a tough piece to play I often find my pinkie is anchored on the pick guard to provide a bit of stability for the other fingers to work off. But more and more I'm trying to get away from this (especially in flatpicking) as that anchor seems to create tension in my hand and forearm that means after a few minutes my playing muscles start to tire. That said, it's still a useful technique now and then.
@DelOfTheShire thanks for the reply and yes, there are no rules I guess. I think I need to stop worrying or thinking about those things and just play..
im just learning vestapol at the moment, its sounding ok but not at the kind of tempo you play it.
nice work a note on the song stephan grossman covers this one with lyrics along the lines train goin round the bend it was also on a transatlantic compilation in the 70s
Thanks Alain. The guitar is in open D tuning DADF#AD. The main theme is very old, part of the traditional blues repertoire, but the variations are mine.
