@furryfireman He was using After Effects because it has a lot more features, and because clips can move between A.E. and Premiere unlike Premiere to Motion.
Of course the first Premiere was a little clunky. Computing technology, RAM and memory have all improved. My first jobs editing were on a flatbed gang reel 16mm film hot splicer. I've seen it all.
Again, everybody loves After Effects. That's "Adobe" product, not Apple-Mac. The entire Adobe Creative Suite family of tools are designed to work flawlessly together.
And they do! I'll take the Adobe Creative Suite HANDS DOWN!
I was editing with Premiere BEFORE Apple got into the video editing business. Adobe Premiere was the first non-linear editing program and is still the best. Apple and the Mac did not invent non-linear editing.
Final Cut Pro's "Motion Graphics" are nothing but a glorified version of NewTek's canned effects. Adobe After Effects is the "KANG" of composite. I remember when every come-lately Mac user begged to have Adobe After Effects to go along with their FCP system.
Premiere was the first editing program I ever used back in the late 90s. That's what I learned to edit on. One of the things that frustrated me about it was how unstable it was at the time. When I went to school, all of our editing suites were Avid so that became my editor of choice for a few years but in the last year or so I've switched back to Premiere because of how smoothly it handles native DSLR footage. The much improved interface puts it on par with the competition.
I randomly received Adobe Premiere Elements 9 as a gift...is there anything good i can do with that? Can I do any of the effects that you have taught us with that program?
can someone tell me how to put sound on the left to the right, cause i have a microphone that will only record sound on the left but not on the right. on adobe i could just siply duplicate the original sound and make the copy sound on the right instead of the left...is there a way to do this???
@stoneycartoon whoa ok mabye i didn't think when i wrote that comment but there is no need to insult me like that, as soon as i posted that comment i regreted. it so sorry if i offended you everybody has there opinions and i shoudn't have judged you.
When i moved from wmm to sony vegas i felt like i was going from a super easy kids program to a highly advanced extreme video editing software. Which was kind off the case.
But now, when i look at adobe after effects or any programs like that i get the same feeling. I don't understand a shit, so many options :o
@blindman182 if you knew anything at all the prior versions of FCP have been used in hollywood and most of the tv shows you watch award winning movies like "The Social Network" the industry standard is AVID though
@blindman182 .....and Adobe is NOT proprietary, too? Flash vs HTML5 as an example? Wake up, get a clue, learn about the world. Every company is looking for profit, EVERY company.
Use Linux if you're anti-proprietary instead of Windows/OSX. Use other Open Source movie editors and compositor instead of Premiere. Go try BLENDER, it's open source and has MoCap, 3d, compositor and editor.
@peterwXXX Don't come at me with "get into open source" shit. I'm all for open source. I'm using Opera ffs. Plus, everything I've ever made has been given away for free and anything with code in it, I give it away. So stfu and learn some respect. Don't assume.
@filmriot Hey Ryan, love your show, i know a technique to get the Widescreen Bars in AE, what you have to do is make a solid at the very top. Effects-Generate-Grid on the layer, and make the width more than your width of your clip, and the same with height. Make the grid black, and set the border up until you get the bars the way you want. Then adjust the width until you get it the way you want. Hope This Helps!
For those who wonder how to put those two black empties up and down... Ctrl + J - Mattes in Premiere and chose one of the vertical or horizontal options. Cheers. ;]
I learned video editing on FCP in highschool and college, but used premiere at home. very similar. When I was hired to set up a company (the one I now work for) for media production, I went with the adobe master collection and a PC because it was cheaper, yet we were able to finish projects much faster than on a mac. After seeing what FCPX had to offer, I'm glad I didn't try to stick with the "industry standard".

For Letter Box widescreen on premiere pro, what I did is create a new sequence, and make sure that new sequence is just exactly like the sequence when you editing your clips, then import your clips sequence to the new one (basically the logic is like make some pre-composition in AE), then go to video effects, transform, crop, and crop the top and the bottom of your vids.. And when render it out, b4 you export just change the height of your aspect ratio while matching it on the left display..! :D
Hey Ryan, to get a 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio in Premier: Simply add the "Crop" filter to all of your clips and take 12% of top and bottom and that is it! If you want render out without the black bars crop it at the render.
I am using premier on mac for a while now . but my computer got slow, so I reinstalled the thing. my problem is: before I did it, opening mts in premier was possible. but now I can't!!! and now I'm like: wtf going on????
can you please help me??

PS: your freaking awesome, keep doing what your doing!!!!!!
Remember guys,Ryan is a professional. Final cut x was made so that people who are not so very good at sound and formats etc should get things done easier.
So for intermediate and beginners final cut x is good. But if you are a pro like ryan and know alot about formats etc than i would go for premiere pro.
@StupidVids2009 When I used Vegas I thought that too, but then I used FCP (7 not X) and Premiere Pro (which I have been using constantly for about 10 months), and I learned why. To put it in a few words: there's a lot more power with those applications. From import to export there's just more there. In general Vegas just lacks a lot of features and methods that are highly beneficial.
@rand0m4productions do u mind giving some examples? because i've used both and although i did find a couple things about premiere that i liked, the workflow of premiere didn't quite match up to mine in sony vegas, and considering i found alot more flaws then i did pros, i just switched back to sony vegas pro.
I currently use Premiere and AEffects Cs5, the 'replace with AE composition' doesn't work as it says: Adobe Dynamic Link requires Adobe Production Premium. Mine is Pro version. So what's that problem, and would it happen in Cs5.5? Wait, that's 2 questions. Anyway, thanks in advance, you rock! :)
Even with the half off deal Adobe is offering, its still over twice as expensive as Final Cut. I'm sure you get more performance with Adobe, but if its twice as expensive, you should get something comparably more.
After watching this i was like oh shit FCP turning into imovie.!!! nooooo. Then i asked around, people like the head of BBC Documentary, who's switching to the new final cut. I used it for a bit , i like it it feels like using Inferno or edit box.
Any chance you could do a round up of Final Cut and Avid? I am looking to make the switch as well and don’t know what to pick between Avid and Premiere. Thanks!
thank you so much for talking up CS5 + After Effects... I've been using this workflow for so long and it seems like no one with a real voice in the industry has given it a fair shot. I love it!
I think this was a strange comparison, and I would have to say that in a battle of Final Cut Pro vs Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5... Final Cut Pro would win, unless you don't plan on doing any color grading, keying, or any other FX. If your taking just the editing process, then definitely Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5. You should have recommended After Effects + Premiere Pro over Final Cut. The workflow and just how they go together natively is great. I'd also recommend taking a look at Sony Vegas Pro.
@ThePostRockProject Premiere is faster and easier to use with After Effects so it's a win and a lot faster for proffesional use. Adobe All The Way. ;)
hey guys I'm a film maker and thats my passion. Film Riot is a huge inspiration and i have used lots of their technics! i just finished a short film "Dear Sam" by Jordee Arvin its on my channel. all i ask is i get some thumbs up on this comment so people can see this and look at my new short film that would be great! thank you film riot for doing what you do and keep up the good work! love ya guys! cheers
you can use an image for widescreen bars, or you can bring all of your movie into AE via dynamiclink, then video copoilet has a great plug in for widescreen bars :D
@calypsopainting I completely agree with you. I have a basic Macbook Pro that I use for Music Production, I don't think it could handle HD video editing, but my PC can, so it saves me the extra money for an imac or a mac capable of HD video editing.
Could you or somebody give me a suggestion for a great intermediate video editor that is more advanced than Windows Movie Maker but not as complex as Sony Vegas Pro? I would like to make short films with ease and access to the tools you find would in a pro level editor but be able to put something together that looks great. Help me please?!?!
@TheSHIZZ365 Vegas Movie Studio. Just get purple one on the sony vegas website since it's the cheapest and has pro stuff like color correction and color key. It takes some getting used to to switch from Movie Maker to Vegas, I had the same issue but after a few weeks you'll get used to it. Vegas doesn't handle AVI and MP4 format that well, best to use WMV video format
I've never used Premiere Elements so I can't give an opinion on it.
@Filmslammer I have a Canon T3i... are you saying I will not be able to edit it's footage straight from the camera without risking having to convert the footage and possibly loose some of it's original quality?
@TheSHIZZ365 Yes you might need to convert, use mpeg stream clip, Ryan uses it for his 5D so it shouldnt be that bad. But MOV's and WMV are best for editing with Vegas. MP4's I only recomend using if your computer is fast because it lags sometimes. AVI's tend to have issues at least in older versions of Vegas.
Been using Premiere for the longest. CS5 has always been better than FCP imo.
As for the crop bars I believe Crazy Delcy has a mask that you can just add at the top video layer to get it: crazydelcytv(dot)com/downloads/
Another way is to finish editing, then go to new, sequence, drag over your first sequence (the one with the editing) to the new sequence timeline. The add the crop effect to the sequence and adjust the bars to whatever level you want.
Can you please make a video on how to make an effect of someone crashing through a window. I mainly just need to know how to make a window look like its cracking. I do only have adobe premiere element and adobe photoshop, and adobe flash. Thank you.
RYAN! For the widescreen bars in premire go to title, new title, based on template, title designer presets, mattes, and letter box. HAVE A NICE DAY!!!
Hi Ryan, Why you need a plugin for letterboxing. Can't you just place a transparent png of the black bars over your project? By the way, I edit all my movies and do effects work in Blender which works natively on just about every platform, imports just about every codec, offers unlimited channels, etc. Just a thought.
Made the switch too, Adobe CS 5.5 Production Premium. Waist of time to compare it to Final Cut X or any Final Cut. Final Cut was always like driving an old Studebaker or a Model T Ford. If you are a student pick up CS5.5 PP for $429 at Amazon.
@saryoku Oh dude, I have 4GB's of Ram as well. And my Core is i5! Runs pretty smooth (lags sometime but not so much that it's annoying.) but I haven't used dynamic link so I wouldn't know. I think most comp/laps can handle 8GB. if not, try googling on how to use a Pendrive as additional Ram.
how fast is your computer? have you tried running Premiere on a PC? I find the dynamic link between after effects and premiere runs really slow on my computer, its almost better to just render and re-import.
you encouraged me to give my kid for adoption, so i did and got a new one... my wife hated me for it, so i divorced and got a a big breasted brasilian girl... i love filmriot :D
Hey Ry! I just got my new Macbook pro (which i absolutely love!) and i was wondering that since I've never used FCP before, like any of them, should I get FCPx? Since there really isn't a learning curve for me.
thank you sooooo much!! plus i have been having problems with magic bullet with FCPX. Im yout new FAN!

Adobe All The Way. ;)

Crop the top of opening image. (both top and bottom 13%) then you can copy and paste to your hearts content.

you can use an image for widescreen bars, or you can bring all of your movie into AE via dynamiclink, then video copoilet has a great plug in for widescreen bars :D

Is Premier able to export into final cut? Its a requirement at my school right now.

@calypsopainting
Premiere will export XMLs, so yeah.

@Terjay Thanks now I won't need to buy a mac

@calypsopainting Same here! Now I can only use a Macbook for music editing and that's it, haha!! Thank you Film Riot!!
Destroysall 5 months ago
@Destroysall It's not that I hate mac but that I don't want to spend money that I don't have to
calypsopainting 5 months ago
@calypsopainting I completely agree with you. I have a basic Macbook Pro that I use for Music Production, I don't think it could handle HD video editing, but my PC can, so it saves me the extra money for an imac or a mac capable of HD video editing.

RYAN- My advice is to make a set of widescreen mattes in photoshop at 300DPI. Premier recognizes PSD nativly, and the quality is outstanding.

TheSHIZZ365 5 months ago
@TheSHIZZ365 Vegas in an intermediate level, try using Vegas Movie Studio or Adobe Premiere Elements.
Filmslammer 5 months ago
@Filmslammer What do you use?
TheSHIZZ365 5 months ago
@TheSHIZZ365 Vegas Movie Studio. Just get purple one on the sony vegas website since it's the cheapest and has pro stuff like color correction and color key. It takes some getting used to to switch from Movie Maker to Vegas, I had the same issue but after a few weeks you'll get used to it. Vegas doesn't handle AVI and MP4 format that well, best to use WMV video format
I've never used Premiere Elements so I can't give an opinion on it.
Filmslammer 5 months ago 2
@Filmslammer I have a Canon T3i... are you saying I will not be able to edit it's footage straight from the camera without risking having to convert the footage and possibly loose some of it's original quality?
TheSHIZZ365 5 months ago
@TheSHIZZ365 Yes you might need to convert, use mpeg stream clip, Ryan uses it for his 5D so it shouldnt be that bad. But MOV's and WMV are best for editing with Vegas. MP4's I only recomend using if your computer is fast because it lags sometimes. AVI's tend to have issues at least in older versions of Vegas.
Filmslammer 5 months ago
hi ryan
did you upgrade to the os lion ???
CRPritch20 5 months ago
Been using Premiere for the longest. CS5 has always been better than FCP imo.
As for the crop bars I believe Crazy Delcy has a mask that you can just add at the top video layer to get it: crazydelcytv(dot)com/downloads/
Another way is to finish editing, then go to new, sequence, drag over your first sequence (the one with the editing) to the new sequence timeline. The add the crop effect to the sequence and adjust the bars to whatever level you want.
R3APER24 5 months ago
Set your playback resolution to "AUTO" if you have a good standard video card and st least a dual core CPU, premiere will cruise!:)
Robroy333 5 months ago
You're right Filmslammer! I forgot to mention that! Lol
Robroy333 5 months ago
Can you please make a video on how to make an effect of someone crashing through a window. I mainly just need to know how to make a window look like its cracking. I do only have adobe premiere element and adobe photoshop, and adobe flash. Thank you.
kirbyerick 5 months ago
What software did you use to make the intro you have in all your newer videos
kirbyerick 5 months ago
RYAN! For the widescreen bars in premire go to title, new title, based on template, title designer presets, mattes, and letter box. HAVE A NICE DAY!!!
Filmslammer 5 months ago
What do you need to get a srudent discount from adobe for premiere cs5.5? :D
Zehle325 5 months ago
@saryoku i used the 30 day trial and all I could say is lower your playback resolution
LoganWalkerVideos 5 months ago
Yes you can add sound fx and effects like reverb, eq, delay etc. Built in:)
Robroy333 5 months ago
is adobe premiere any good for adding sound effects and adding effects to them?
ilovethesimpsons8 5 months ago
Hi Ryan, Why you need a plugin for letterboxing. Can't you just place a transparent png of the black bars over your project? By the way, I edit all my movies and do effects work in Blender which works natively on just about every platform, imports just about every codec, offers unlimited channels, etc. Just a thought.

Made the switch too, Adobe CS 5.5 Production Premium. Waist of time to compare it to Final Cut X or any Final Cut. Final Cut was always like driving an old Studebaker or a Model T Ford. If you are a student pick up CS5.5 PP for $429 at Amazon.
rb5235 5 months ago
@saryoku Oh dude, I have 4GB's of Ram as well. And my Core is i5! Runs pretty smooth (lags sometime but not so much that it's annoying.) but I haven't used dynamic link so I wouldn't know. I think most comp/laps can handle 8GB. if not, try googling on how to use a Pendrive as additional Ram.
Oh yes, it's possible.
jackripperz 5 months ago
how fast is your computer? have you tried running Premiere on a PC? I find the dynamic link between after effects and premiere runs really slow on my computer, its almost better to just render and re-import.
