there is an explanation to this tradition. Adjutants in the past, move around the battalion or regiment in horse back. Today ofcourse its obselete we don't ride in horses anymore, but the tradition is still there. So portray that part- you can't make him walk - its look shabby or lousy, if make him run. its to fast - so a trot is somewhat in between.
