why can't all the people of cyprus live together as cypriots, neither greek or turkish, but cypriot; I also thought that Cyprus was a separate european country totally independent of both greece & turkey, so in theory at least every cypriot resident should be able to live together on the whole island as cypriots (well in theory anyway)

I am Cypriot so I can explain what happened:

Cyprus IS a country AND an island!

But half of it is owned by the Turkish!

We now have to show them our passports to get to the other side of OUR country!

Well, the Turkish half is an illegal government, and not recognized by any country except Turkey. Technically, the whole island is one country, all of it belongs to Europe. because it technically belongs to the Cypriot Republic. The only reason we show passports is because of their government of Northern Cyprus, despite it being illegal.
