I just finished reading the book today for school and fell in love with it. I had no idea there was movie. Imagine how excited I was when i say it on netflix XD
@olivleonardo Too hard words to judge a great actor and a great performance as this Richard Hurt played in this movie. Do you know anything about acting? Well, I do. And any person who knows anything about acting would never call shit the work William Hurt did in this movie.
I think the police may have felt Molina was gonna jeopardise the whole 'mission' as such. by pairing up with valentins crew, the police attacked on the basis that they believed he had identified the actual group they were after all along. he gets shot by the rebels because they obviously know he is a threat to them either way - clearer? the whole point of valentins morphine enticed dreams is to give him the sanctity he knows he shall never get in life as long as he is in prison, so his dreams a
Though about a South or Central American country (filmed in Brazil), it could be a tale of how any nation can sink to the depravity of fascism. It is a great performance by all three main characters, and speaks volumes about how we must overcome our indifference and prejudices in order to stay free. The strength of a people and a nation rests on their own inner core values, not on those imposed upon them from those in power. Treating each other with respect no matter our differences.
como es posible que Jon Voight perdiera el oscar de esta película. El tren del infierno, explosiva y poderosa, voigth no podía hablar en los descanso del set con su compañeros, porque estabas metido y cansado dentro del personaje de manny.
A Brazilian-American movie, filmed entirely in Sao Paulo (Brazil), starred by Brazilian actress Sonia Braga, the American actor William Hurt, and Raul Julia ( Puerto Rican actor). An wonderful movie!
I just watched this movie and I loved it to pieces. But the ending confused to me. I don't understand why Luis (Hurt) sets up a rendezvous with the police and why they all start shooting at him. And the last scene where Valentin (Julia) gets shot up with morphine after being brutally beaten by his captors and dreams of his one true love. It seems awfully depressing because Valentin's just gonna wake up and get tortured some more. But mostly I don't understand why Luis get shot. Somebody explain?
Here William Hurt secures himself at the top of the art of film acting. Couldn't be a more particular character and yet he embodies all humanity. I have never seen as fascinating a theatrical style film performance which is perfect, perfectly true and poetically true. No performance more brave,vulnerable, or beautiful. A perfect miracle.
William Hurt is so grossly miscast. What an insult to give him an Oscar. He sounds like he's from Ohio and looks about as Hispanic as Dick Cheney. He looked particuarly silly next to Sonia Braga and Raul Julia and acts catatonic. What an awful performance.
@Visonu, yeah, and he was a brasilian, just like me, brasil have agreat potencial in the movie industry, a shame that we only talk about our very own problems.
I want to see this movie. I just finished reading the book, and it's the saddest book I've ever read. The absence of attribution is very effective. I love that there's no "he said" this or "he did that" because without those instructions telling you who says and does what, it forces the reader to pay closer attention to the dialogue. I fell for Molina and Valentin. And if you read the book, you can find out who the Spider woman is and how she's poetically described.
For years i always thought that this was a horror film. I remember a huge cardboard fim stand of the front cover of the movie in my local video shop. When i was a kid i used to avoid looking at it.
As an argentinian man, i'm so proud of belonging to the same land as Manuel Puig, one of the greatest writers we had. "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is one of the sgtrongest texts ever writen, and this movie is pure poetry and beauty about that text.
Yes and I love the fact that there's no attribution in the novel. It forces you to pay more attention to the dialogue, from the adjectives used and who the dialogue best belongs to, logically.
Id much rather be a Canadian, however, Canada will never in a thousand years put out a writer as good as Maneul Puig. Maybe in ten thousand years we will come close.
@olivieonardo.....1984 is different from 1985.
rtmeador 4 months ago
@rtmeador No, they were both nominated in 1985 and William Hurt won. But I regret the words I've used.

The character, of course, not the actor. The actor did a brilliant job as the homophobe.
