I've owned two M1330 - 2.2ghz and 1.6ghz (current). I changed for the smaller processor because I found the first was running far too hot and required the fan to be on all the time. The second is better but it still is a hot-running computer. It's fine during winter, but in a London summer it is like sitting in front of a small heater.
This is probably the last dell computer I am getting, it worked perfectly for the first 6 months and then programs that run on it like the Microsoft word that comes with it started freezing constantly like every 20-40 minuets. It does not unfreeze if you wait and I asked a commuter guy from dell to take a look at it and he could not figure out what was wrong.
i dont know ..dell outsources to all the crappiest computer components .. there's a reason there computers are so cheap. . i dont know . . i'd say custom build all the way . . but for laptops . . it's kinda hard .. i had a friend who had a studio laptop. . two weeks and the speakers stopped working cause of faulty wiring .. sent it back .. had it for three months .. and then all the keys started to snap off .. good luck with dell. . i'd go for HP. . or even ACER. .

i already have my own m1330... the only problem with this laptop is that whenever the cord is plug out, the brightness of the screen usually gets darker... i didnt expect to be as dark as wat i thought... so basically, everytime i use my laptop... i just plug the cord into the outlet to keep the brightness better... im pretty satisfied with my laptop though...

X3100 is a POS. Just about the worst integrated graphics card they still make. 3200 > 4500 > 3100 But I'd say get a dedicated graphics card, because it will run vista and graphics apps faster unless you are crazy about saving battery life.

It really depends on what you want. If you want gaming and more performance, get the XPS. If you don't care so much about that stuff, and don't care how thin your laptop is, get the Mac.
I've just ordered the Dell XPS M1330 after owning a MacBook for about a year and a half. As good as Mac OS X is, I just found that I was more productive in Windows. Not to mention I prefer the user interface of Windows Vista to Leopard's. The MacBook set the standard for 13.3'' notebooks when released, but Dell has now exceeded the standard, in my opinion. Also, the XPS M1330 can be better configured than the MacBook for less. I'd recommend the XPS because you get a good OS and a great notebook.
Is the charger like the inspiron chargers or is it totaly different ? cos im buying one of these and i have a dell inspiron 1300 and 2 chargers would be good

The greatest disappointment ever. I bought it on in Aug07 and I had to replace the hard drive in Oct & the charger in Dec. The computer crashed again in Feb. Extremely fragile. Doesn't perform as well as it claims. It's super slow and customer support takes forever to identify problems. I had to stay on the phone for 6 hrs to get my problem fixed. Don't buy this... or buy it from me! I'm so ready to get rid of it!
i have 2 of these with the led and nvidia running linux. all the hardware works. webcam, built-in mic, nvidia, hdmi (including sound), fingerprint reader, etc. haven't had a problem yet. however, my computer skills don't suck.
Face it. For the price of the M1330, you won't find anything near as good, and it doesn't suck, it performs better in areas than my mac book pro. Tell me which laptop do you usually use that makes the M1330 appear to perform so bad?

Thanks for the review. In parts quite useful but maybe you should check the outcome regarding screen visibility before airing it. Also, it would be pleasant to get to know something about battery usage and keyboard feel. the cpu fan is too loud, and so is the optical drive. also, a bulging keyboard? terrible. otherwise it looks like a decent notebook. they really should fix that optical drive, and they should have an ULV cpu option.
The wait time between ordering and delivery has improved. I ordered mine 2/19 shipping date is 2/27. I did not order the LCD, the weight savings would have been nice, but many reviews indicated the actual view was the same, so I saved the money. There is a m1330 on display at my University with the LCD, and I will side-by-side compare them and post my findings here. Customer service is not a joke the XPS hotline is great. you are connected instantly to someone in north america. I just got a 1530 and its my 3rd dell computer and no problems. My family has had 6 dell computers and no problems so your theory about them breaking is false. Myth Busted. Dell components are not obsolete. if you buy a good computer it is going to be good. If you pay $499 for a computer then its going to be good for internet and word.
I have read numberously the Windows XP is NOT compatable with XPS. I have read this on personal reviews on the Dell site itself. I have read that people talk do Dell tech support regarding the issue.
Dell has what appears to be ALL the drivers for this machine for XP including MediaDirect, RoxioCreator, the nVidia drivers, etc., etc. Looks like you can install XP just fine. btw. You can order this as an 'nSeries' without Microsoft Vista and save $100. If you have a copy of XP laying around (or Vista) or you might want to run Ubuntu (one of the nSeries offerings) or some other Linux/BSD. It's nice (for me) that Dell will offer a computer without Microsoft. eventually I'll have 4gigs & Vista64

No Mac Dope... I win!! A: it's an "N" series so it comes with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed and therefore it will run CIRCLES around Apple's ultra-limited OS. B: Maybe I got a good one, but the fan seldom comes on and when it does it is not noisy at all. Just sounds like a fan, a quiet fan... Or maybe it seldom comes on because I'm running an efficient OS. MacOS... When are they going to give you the option of changing the theme? Those 'candy-bubbles' have been around for over 8 years. Ugly-Sucks.
Ubuntu run circles around OS X? Ha! It can't even run circles around XP Home. The selection of software available for linux is awful. (You can't even do basic pdf editing in any straightforward way, like cropping the margins out!) There's also a power management bug that wears your HDD out by causing it to cycle way too much. People are lucky to get their sound to work. Video drivers are often limited. (This is true for most any driver in general.) It just sucks!
the cd drive HAS to be made whisper quite; even the doors on the original series of star trek were much quieter, and that was a thick titanium alloy sliding, if you know what I mean, rofl

xp does work with the xps you just have to change some settings. Why wouldn't you get vista it is far supperior to xp.

Dell has what appears to be ALL the drivers for this machine for XP including MediaDirect, RoxioCreator, the nVidia drivers, etc., etc. Looks like you can install XP just fine. btw. You can order this as an 'nSeries' without Microsoft Vista and save $100. If you have a copy of XP laying around (or Vista) or you might want to run Ubuntu (one of the nSeries offerings) or some other Linux/BSD. It's nice (for me) that Dell will offer a computer without Microsoft. eventually I'll have 4gigs & Vista64

Bought my daughter a mac book and was able to compare it side-by-side at my University's book store with the m1330. She liked the mac, I liked the Dell. 'bout the same price. Hers 2.0GHz, 1G ram - mine 2.2GHz 2G ram. Mine's better looking (red one) and faster and lighter. I win!

No Mac Dope... I win!! A: it's an "N" series so it comes with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed and therefore it will run CIRCLES around Apple's ultra-limited OS. B: Maybe I got a good one, but the fan seldom comes on and when it does it is not noisy at all. Just sounds like a fan, a quiet fan... Or maybe it seldom comes on because I'm running an efficient OS. MacOS... When are they going to give you the option of changing the theme? Those 'candy-bubbles' have been around for over 8 years. Ugly-Sucks.

Ubuntu run circles around OS X? Ha! It can't even run circles around XP Home. The selection of software available for linux is awful. (You can't even do basic pdf editing in any straightforward way, like cropping the margins out!) There's also a power management bug that wears your HDD out by causing it to cycle way too much. People are lucky to get their sound to work. Video drivers are often limited. (This is true for most any driver in general.) It just sucks!

the cd drive HAS to be made whisper quite; even the doors on the original series of star trek were much quieter, and that was a thick titanium alloy sliding, if you know what I mean, rofl

If I were to go to a PC this is what I would go for. It is the closest to a Macbook. Good video i'm thinking of getting this as a secondary computer now!

Im not really a serious gamer, but I do play Halo Online often. The biggest reason im getting this is cuz of school next year. Im mostly gonna use it for power points/word applications/graphing.
I want a fast pc, quiet, and can handle multiple applications well. I dont want it laggy and irresponsive...
Should I get this or an Inspiron and customize it a bit to make it run faster? I dont even know what NVIDIA is or what it does...so would what you recomend.

I'd go for this over the Inspiron as this is far better looking and the Inspirons haven't got the same waw factor.
BTW NVIDIA is the company that provides the graphics so you can see what your doing. (ATI is the other large manufacture).

BFD if it's a little loud putting the DVD in, it's still an awesome computer. Even a Ferrari makes a little noise when you close the door.

The M1330 is NOT meant for gaming.
Get an Asus G1 or something - same price for more power (has DDR3 video memory)
