Mefistofele Part 3: Ramey, Benackova, O'Neill, Arena, San Francisco Opera

I was very fortunate to see this production at the Houston Grand Opera. Sets and costumes courtesy of San Farncisco Opera. Samuel Ramey was the star. After acts 1 and 2 then intermission came this opening of act 3. Just breathtaking! Sadly I was alone that night and had no one to share my joy at seeing and hearing this chorus work.

In case anyone is interrested in obtaining the piano score, it was published by Ricordi. in 1986..their publication number is 46855

I was fortunate to find in my local library the score for this opera, transposed for piano, which I made a copy of. So after watching the video of this SF production a number of times and getting goosebumps during this great chorus, I can now play it on my piano. What joy!!! When I am finished playing this selection, I am drained, it is so moving.

damn its great, but i think its very different from the european opera.

just check out the mefistofele in hungary at the National Opera of Hungary. its gonna have its premier next week, and however its not as big as the san francisco opera, but i think its more spectacular and stunning. its worth it to visit this little country even if you only come to see am opera show.

When this was produced I lived next door to the SF Opera on McAllister. I went to 3 or 4 performances. I loved it; Samuel Ramey was made for the role. Watching this video I still get misty eyed and my thoat begins to tighten up on me. Thank you heildirgunter for posting this performance. My buddy Michael S. was in the zebra costume and a lackey to Ramey in this opera.

I've just seen a great production of this at the Israeli opera.

These opening parts were played when La Scala was reopened after WW2.
