I used to have a credit account with MBNA that charged me 13.9% interest. Not the best rate, but reasonable. Then they got bought out by Bank of A-holes. Despite my perfect payment history and for no reason whatsoever, BoA immediately shut off my credit line and doubled my interest rate to 28%. Guess that is how they were able to pay that crook Ken Lewis his 125 million dollar golden parachute.
How these conservative pricks can even TRY to justify this atrocity is COMPLETELY beyond me...

Turks are right: the failure is systemic. Joseph Stiglitz interviewed by James Surowiecki of the New Yorker refers to the problem created by the paradigm of "agency" with managers supposedly "representing" owners ultimately not being accountable to them. Corporatist leadership is a closed club, and we should be outraged by the abusiveness. Nell Minow has some decent ideas how to deal with the problem of executive pay and Congress is going to kick it around so it might be corrected some day.
Disagree with you because there are many times when a person gets fired for "not performing" and those people deserve to keep their pensions. And you can't say it should only be applied to CEOs because that isn't legal.

Wow, I guess when you have nothing left to hold on to, just yell out "Glenn Beck!" Beck's agenda is to gain ratings. And how do you do that? I just find it hypocritical that this Cenk guy is a Democrat and supports taxpyer funded healthcare (even for those who don't pay tax) and yet he objects to corporate bailouts.
Why? Because there can be only two extreme points of view? He's not a 'democrat' per se, he just votes for them because he doesn't have anyone else to vote for. He's a liberal first and foremost i think.
I thought the United States was a capitalist country - you know, when your business fails, you're out of money and the nation doesn't come to your rescue (that's those socialist and social democratic nations) ...
Oh yeah, it's for the rich only!!! Let the poor pay so you don't have to join them ...
This Cenk guy is such a loudmouth, I'm not saying the likes of Rush Limbaugh aren't (but at least he's been successful, doesn't he have a $400 milllion contract).
This guy is making a living out of being an opinionated loudmouth.
It simply doesn't make any sense, and even if you want to argue for it there is no way you can justify giving these companies money with no restrictions, because of course the CEO's are gonna keep paying themselves huge money.
because if a bank goes bankrupt everybody who has their money in the bank loses. That's what happened in the Great Depression, everybody's savings were lost.
Totally. I dunno if Cenk really believes in that or he`s just quoting but whenever I read someone sayin "this isn`t REAL capitalism" I`m just puzzled. This IS real capitalism where everything can be turned into a profit, can be bought and sold, including politics and justice.
They should have given this guy a choice because of all his failures. I would have voted to offer him the choice of getting his dick shot off and getting the 125 million. Since he failed so immensely, he has to be willing to lose his dick to get that kind of cash. If he isn't willing to lose his wang, then he should get nothing. Problem solved. Next.
True, he is screwing over the American taxpayer, but he's only taking $53 million, how much are all of the welfare recipients and medicare/medicaid eligible people taking?
because you might get sick. Because we would pay if it were you who is sick, no matter how ungrateful you are at the mo.
Because migrant workers contribute vastly more to our economy then the cost of providing extra services that need to be provided.
As far as benefits go.. yes there are people who abuse the system, but the vast majority are legitimately unable to work. and we would support you if you were unable to.. that's why it is fair
I may get sick, but Thank God I'm not. Asylum seekers are by enlarge on benefits, and they simply suck out money.
I don't care if they can't work its not up to me to support them, or at least it should not be. Why should I be taxed to pay for someone else's problems, or them to pay for mine.
BTW there's a thing called family and friends, a much better safety net than any statist one.
Great, I don't want you to get sick either. But what if you were in an accident and you were unable to afford the emergency procedure. What if you were left unable to work after that, and the cost for you to live far exceeded anything you and your family could afford. So your neighbours are charitable and support you.. what if one of them gets sick? You need a bigger pool of people to help out.. and that is exactly what we have with the NHS
No I don't, you assume I have some kind of right to force other people to pay for me, I don't. If they do out of the goodness of their hearts, or I do for them, that's all well and good but there should not be any requirements.
Ultimately when I have to work for another person's benefit (even if there is a middleman, i.e. the state) I am their slave, and that is wrong.
I understand where you are coming from. No person has an intrinsic right to impose any law upon another. However, would you agree that protecting Human and Civil rights is likely to benefit, not only society, but all people? Thus we begin by introducing laws to protect those 'rights'. Whilst I again concede that there is no 'right' to enforce such a law, it is however necessary for it to exist for, any society to succeed. A moral one at least. I consider Health a human right, hence my argument.
I'm a statist, althought not an extreme one, I'm not an anarchist and I accept the state is there to act as a protector of my rights and accept the existance of some taxes.
However, I don't see that I have any obligation, moral or otherwise, to pay for someone else to feed, clothe or sustain themselves or to have healthcare.
Right? Well yes a right, a right in much the same way as Americans have the right to bare arms but the government does not buy them a gun, see my point?
The point is that we are a social species, and more importantly a society, and we help the ones in need (or should at any rate).
As for Asylum seekers.. let them go!
They make up 0.04% of our population and the cost of keeping them is 0.01% of our budget.. I'd say that's not a huge amount, but it's still too much when we grant them nothing close to the human and civil rights our citizens enjoy. and most of them want to do nothing more than work for a living, than be in a prison.
I don't think they do wish to work. Firstly let me make my positition clear, we should honour our obligations under international law (various laws which govern this which pre-date the EU) and those obligations are to take in anybody for whom this is the FIRST safe country they come to.
There's a tonne of safe countries in between Afghanistan and Britain, this leads me to believe they have an ulterior motive (benefits???).
Like you´re going to ask your friends to pay your medical bills. lol You´re not really English. All my English friends are a lot more sensible than you. Forgive me for not believing you.
I just found it amazing, as all my English friends disagree with you, that´s all. I didn´t mean to accuse you of lying. No, of course I´m not Spainsh. I never said I was. My profile says I live here which I do. Sorry if that´s confusing.
pork You sound like you´re from Alabama or something. Move there and you can be one of the 122 Americans that die every day because they have no insurance. Maybe an ill person will cough on you and suddenly you´ll wish he had insurance. You´re so selfish you don´t realise how this may affect YOU.
Family and friends, what a joke. Become an even bigger burden on your family (if you´re lucky enough to have one) instead of paying NHS. I actually think you´re winding me up.
I'd love to live in Alabama, or maybe Texas or somewhere. I'm considering emigrating to the states, I'm sick of this country, most people aren't even English, we're saturated with asylum scroungers, Asians etc
I don't really give a shit about the 122 Americans who die every day becaue of a lack of healthcare, a lot more will die when they have to wait 6 weeks for an appointment with their GP.
There is very slight chance by the time you get there, there MIGHT be healthcare.
People will see you as the asylum seeking migrant that you hate so much and then you´ll know what it feels like to be discriminated against. That would be poetic justice.
Correct me if I´m wrong but you sound racist. Even Texas is quickly turning democrat. The few trolls here don´t represent mainstream America.
No sarcasm though. In general I understand how you feel.
Oh how mature, why am I an idiot, because I hate everybody who steals from the taxpayer (i.e. welfare recipients and corporate scumbags) instead of just those who its fashionable to hate?
Vary good clip, but not only have the corporate raiders and bankers taken over the GOP they are now working on demarcates, and they are doing a good gob of taking over all government. They know how easy it is to divide the people, so we need a website that is for the people by the people. The federal government collected over $18 trillion in the past 8 years and what do we have to show for it,
Below is a list of the Democratic Senators that voted against the "Public Option" and the healthcare lobbying money that they received in 2008. My source is Open Secrets. Remember, this in ONLY 2008.
Max Baucus: $1,991,965
Blanche Lincoln: $1,104,186
Kent Conrad: $951,328
Bill Nelson: $608,559
Tom Carper: $572,307
Vote these greedy fuckers out of office when their term is up! They are in bed with the lobbyists and don't give a shit about their constitutents.
exactly right... and like buddcinder right below you said... he failed but he really DIDN'T fail because they knew that this would be their golden parachute so they raped the system.
now it's OUR job to keep the pressure on these assholes so that this never happens again.
The thing is.......he did not fail. They paid huge bonuses to create a way to access the pesants money. Trillions in handouts they never would have received had things continued by the book.
The people who should be put in jail should be the God damned politicians who don't fix the system. I'm tired of hearing 10 years, 5 years until such and such takes effect. No... do it now.
Put limitations on the way the top 5% of US corporations can be structured. Simple. Because that way we create guidelines for companies that without regulation have the ability to destabilize our entire economic system.
Completely stop any and all corporate funding to politicians. take the bottle away.
the government can't interfere in his contract without some historic amendment that would have to say something like:
If a private corporation or corporate network becomes so large that it's failure threatens to drastically destabilize our financial system than those corporations are no longer considered fully private in terms of their regulatory status. And any corporation in this category that is bailed out by tax dollars in the event that they DO fail waives any right to bonuses etc...
O was Big Finances top recipient in 08 to the tune of $40 million. Might explain why 9 months later there has been virtually nothing done to reign in Wall St's excesses.
Thank you so much Cenk for laying it between the lines. It has absolutely nothing to do with capitalism, it's completely corporate insiders robbing all of us.
It's the other government in America, the more powerful one.
Yeah, the government that is almost entirely owned by the corporations... hmmm wonder why they get billions in bailouts while the taxpayers get no say whatsoever.
jldurham - Not sure where you get the idea that those CEOs are democrats...
but whether or not the CEOs are democrats or republicans does not matter. What matters is that they support deregulation of the industry, which just happens to be a talking point of the republican party.
The real democrats would love to regulate how they spend their TARP money, but the republicans and the CEOs are having a fit about it, and the president isn't pushing hard enough on the issue.
When the majority of a party supports deregulation, it's fair to say "the party supports deregulation". Sure, there are a handful of conservatives who do not feel this way, but they are the exception.
The government should have included common sense market regulations at the time they gave the banks the TARP money. Now at this point the banks will never agree to market restrictions. They'll use the tax payer funded TARP money to lobby against regulation.
Cenk, stop lying. Not the entire republican party agrees with this. I can think of at least one congressman who has always spoken out against this kind of thing.
CEOs are basically the ONLY employees left in the private sector that still get pensions. Most private sector employees get shitty 401k's where your retirement is dependent on the stockmarket and you can outlive your money...
When will you folks realise that too much power in the hands of government will always be abused? On one hand you believe that "the people" can not be trusted to solve "collective" problems in a free market society because "the people" are selfish and will not care about others misfortune, or that they will mostly make wrong decisions, so then you turn to big government to look for solutions and then are surprised about getting it up the butt and out of the wallet? Sad reasoning if you ask me.
Although I think it's rediculous. If his position was contracted they cannot breach it unless he did. If a prime football/baseball player is contracted and the team decides to let him go they still have to buy out his contract as stupid as that. You never hear about ppl complaining how much movie stars and sports figures (especially) get. Does a guy playing baseball really "deserve" millions of $ a year? But ppl get pissed off when a surgeon makes 300K a year..
A contract is a contract. There should've been stipulations in the Tarp that prohibited ANY financial gain for any CEO's until every penny borrowed was paid back in full with interest. All pensions and bonuses should've been frozen... period.
I called and canceled my BofA credit card this morning. The guy who took my call didn't even send me to a retention officer. I wonder if they've been getting a lot of angry calls lately?
Capitalism is the free market giving everyone equal opportunity in business. corporatism is doing everything to support the big corporations like the big banks and insurance co.
Oligarchic control of capitalism under the cover of corporate law to subvert the US Constitutional Rights of the natural citizen We the People in favour of the artificial person of the corporation.
Hyenas capitalising on the disorganisation and diversity of We the People using Divide and Conquer techniques.
Finally having control of the Government uses its Police power against We the People, corporatism becoming Fascism.
Nationalism, Racism, Ego-centric religion and intolerance etc.
and the land of that and lazy is a super power, and the rest of the angst filled world can't ignore the jelly belly. OH NO YOU CAN'T LOOK AWAY1!!1! AH THE HUMANITY!!!!
I'm sure your country is just as corrupt and or evil if not more so /blah blah blah
I'll give you fat and stupid. We most certainly are, but what aren't is lazy. We work longer hours with less vacation then most industrialized nations. Fat and stupid
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You Liberals are priceless, a CEO gets paid and you blame everyone but the CEO getting paid.
I could have sworn we just elected a liberal President for "Change we can believe in". Is he not providing you other liberals with that change?
Your right its not his fault, its the GOP. It's not like the Government from the Presidency on down is Democrat, and can vote any bill in they like without a Republican vote.
i dont think everyone who agrees with him thinks its the GOPs specific fault. at least i dont. not saying they werent involved but no....no one is trying to say that is the only factor that matters here.

This Cenk guy is such a loudmouth, I'm not saying the likes of Rush Limbaugh aren't (but at least he's been successful, doesn't he have a $400 milllion contract).
This guy is making a living out of being an opinionated loudmouth.

This is the kind of loud mouth I can stand. He always has his facts straight.

The real wtf is why they got the bailout at all.
It simply doesn't make any sense, and even if you want to argue for it there is no way you can justify giving these companies money with no restrictions, because of course the CEO's are gonna keep paying themselves huge money.
jman451 2 years ago
because if a bank goes bankrupt everybody who has their money in the bank loses. That's what happened in the Great Depression, everybody's savings were lost.

Cenk seems to have a weirdly romanticized idea of capitalism. This is the way it's always been.
frellthat 2 years ago
Totally. I dunno if Cenk really believes in that or he`s just quoting but whenever I read someone sayin "this isn`t REAL capitalism" I`m just puzzled. This IS real capitalism where everything can be turned into a profit, can be bought and sold, including politics and justice.
paolo27th 2 years ago
They should have given this guy a choice because of all his failures. I would have voted to offer him the choice of getting his dick shot off and getting the 125 million. Since he failed so immensely, he has to be willing to lose his dick to get that kind of cash. If he isn't willing to lose his wang, then he should get nothing. Problem solved. Next.

porksicle lame comparison. He was fraudulent.
Wait a sec, you´re from the UK, right? You must hate the NHS.
oalemdemadrid 2 years ago
Yeah I hate the NHS, I'm not ill why should I pay for people who, immigrants and benefits bastards?
Its totally unfair.
theporksicle 2 years ago
because you might get sick.
It isn't perfect, yet.
cmba101 2 years ago
I may get sick, but Thank God I'm not. Asylum seekers are by enlarge on benefits, and they simply suck out money.
I don't care if they can't work its not up to me to support them, or at least it should not be. Why should I be taxed to pay for someone else's problems, or them to pay for mine.
BTW there's a thing called family and friends, a much better safety net than any statist one.
theporksicle 2 years ago
so u wouls have them on the street ans starve?
42Unknowns 2 years ago
"I may get sick, but Thank God I'm not."
You need a bigger pool of people to help out.. and that is exactly what we have with the NHS
cmba101 2 years ago
No I don't, you assume I have some kind of right to force other people to pay for me, I don't. If they do out of the goodness of their hearts, or I do for them, that's all well and good but there should not be any requirements.
Ultimately when I have to work for another person's benefit (even if there is a middleman, i.e. the state) I am their slave, and that is wrong.
theporksicle 2 years ago
I understand where you are coming from. No person has an intrinsic right to impose any law upon another. However, would you agree that protecting Human and Civil rights is likely to benefit, not only society, but all people? Thus we begin by introducing laws to protect those 'rights'. Whilst I again concede that there is no 'right' to enforce such a law, it is however necessary for it to exist for, any society to succeed. A moral one at least. I consider Health a human right, hence my argument.
cmba101 2 years ago
I'm a statist, althought not an extreme one, I'm not an anarchist and I accept the state is there to act as a protector of my rights and accept the existance of some taxes.
However, I don't see that I have any obligation, moral or otherwise, to pay for someone else to feed, clothe or sustain themselves or to have healthcare.
Right? Well yes a right, a right in much the same way as Americans have the right to bare arms but the government does not buy them a gun, see my point?
theporksicle 2 years ago
The point is that we are a social species, and more importantly a society, and we help the ones in need (or should at any rate).
As for Asylum seekers.. let them go!
They make up 0.04% of our population and the cost of keeping them is 0.01% of our budget.. I'd say that's not a huge amount, but it's still too much when we grant them nothing close to the human and civil rights our citizens enjoy. and most of them want to do nothing more than work for a living, than be in a prison.
cmba101 2 years ago
I don't think they do wish to work. Firstly let me make my positition clear, we should honour our obligations under international law (various laws which govern this which pre-date the EU) and those obligations are to take in anybody for whom this is the FIRST safe country they come to.
There's a tonne of safe countries in between Afghanistan and Britain, this leads me to believe they have an ulterior motive (benefits???).

I respect your opinion.

pork You sound like you´re from Alabama or something.
I actually think you´re winding me up.
oalemdemadrid 2 years ago
I'd love to live in Alabama, or maybe Texas or somewhere. I'm considering emigrating to the states, I'm sick of this country, most people aren't even English, we're saturated with asylum scroungers, Asians etc
I don't really give a shit about the 122 Americans who die every day becaue of a lack of healthcare, a lot more will die when they have to wait 6 weeks for an appointment with their GP.
theporksicle 2 years ago
3 things if you move to the states:
There is very slight chance by the time you get there, there MIGHT be healthcare.
People will see you as the asylum seeking migrant that you hate so much and then you´ll know what it feels like to be discriminated against. That would be poetic justice.
Correct me if I´m wrong but you sound racist. Even Texas is quickly turning democrat. The few trolls here don´t represent mainstream America.
No sarcasm though. In general I understand how you feel.

Any real democrat worth his salt would say the same. It's just too bad the president isn't gutsy enough to push.
onimangakat 2 years ago
jldurham - Not sure where you get the idea that those CEOs are democrats...
but whether or not the CEOs are democrats or republicans does not matter. What matters is that they support deregulation of the industry, which just happens to be a talking point of the republican party.
The real democrats would love to regulate how they spend their TARP money, but the republicans and the CEOs are having a fit about it, and the president isn't pushing hard enough on the issue.
