To me the movie of watchmen was a mixed experience; for it's good (and occasionally brilliant) part it had something bad/incomplete; leaving me with a feel of something that COULD have been a masterpiece but lacked severely. I forgot about it almost instantly like any movie that isn't all too great (unlike, say, Pan's labyrinth which kept creeping up in my mind for weeks after watching). But after seeing some scenes again I actually bought it on a whim and it has grown on me somewhat since then.
@TheGriff45 I've only seen clips of it on YouTube. I don't have an extra 20 bucks or even a card for them to go on to pay for all 12 parts. I don't really like the voice actor's voice for alot of the characters...especially the women.
@TheGriff45 Well, as far as comic book movies go, I prefer Batman: Mask of The Phantasm over all. That's a bit off topic, sorry, but Watchmen is still one of my favorites. It just doesn't come close to the graphic novel's greatness, in my opinion...and also Alan Moore's. Have you seen the 12 part motion comic adaptation?
@TheGriff45 That's...strange, the film itself wasn't very well written, and because it took so much out from the graphic novel it had like 50 plot holes. Despite how much you love the graphic novel, as I do, you could tell there was much more put into The Dark Knight. I mean, the only real saving graces of Watchmen the film was Dr. Manhattan's origin and the scenes with Rorschach, course that is all opinion.
Well Griff, danit, let me qualify your statement by saying this: Watchmen had a much better concept, it had the potential to be a thought provoking super hero movie, but unfortunately it fell short of that. The Dark Knight may have not come from such prestigious source material, but was, by far, a better, more well made, MOVIE (not story).

Plus the killed off Two Face which, in my opinion, was the best character in the entire movie. I only watched it to see him and then they fucked it up
lol. so the dark knight, the most critically acclaimed movie of 2008 and gave one of the best performances of the year in heath ledger, is worse than DBE?
you really really REALLY need to stop smoking crack. its bad for your judgement.
and you think the guy who plays goku is any better? i can see why you would think that DBE is better than the dark knight. its obvious you have such a great eye for acting talent.
No, I just know who I like and who I don't like. I've never heard of or seen the guy who played Goku until this movie. I've never liked Ledger and Bale's performance as Batman is worse than Clooney's.
but still, according to you, a movie that's respectful and faithful to the source material is much worse than a movie that destroyed the characters and gave a big FU to the fans.
DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION WAS A BIG SLAP IN THE FACE AND A MIDDLE FINGER TO ALL DB FANS EVER
spoilers:
Goku was a FUCKING demon for Chrissake meaning no super saiyans, and no one going super saiyan ever
The dark knight however was a masterpiece
Great visuals, great story, and great twists
you must be some middle schooler or elementary kid or someone who isn't an old school db fan if you liked the movie because that was my childhood fav. show and they tainted it
No even if ledger didn't die it would still be successful why? because hes in another film coming out soon(he died while making that film) And shit load of people were looking forward to the dark knight waaaay before heath ledger's death.
and if you say you watched DB "before i knew about it" your obviously not a true fan BECAUSE NO ONE CAN GO SUPER SAIYAN IN THE FOLLOWING MOVIES why? no super saiyans exist, krillin isn't in the movie, and Goku is a demon rather than an alien.
Debate wise I think Devilbat wins, not because he's so great but because freezepop's final comment was so full of shit and fail. Accusing someone of being illiterate when his grammar at least makes sense makes you look (to quote you) VERY DUMB.
Rorschach always strikes me as a bit of a hypocrite... In the book anyway. In the film he's an idealist, whereas in the book he frequently points out that the atom bomb was a positive event as it ended the war, yet at the end, when America is on the recieving end, he can't live with the moral implications...
In the movie, Dr Manhattan reminds me of Einstein and how his knowledge was manipulated to create the Atom bomb and how the bombing was done to kill millions in the hope to save billions by stopping in the name of 'peace' by stopping the war.
Not that. I know Dr.Manhattan is supposed to resemble Einstein and "the Manhattan Project." I meant that it wasn't Manhattan's idea to kill all those people. He was just working on parts for Ozzy. He couldn't see the future because of the Techyons, so he didn't know what they would be used for. You are very dumb.
Also, theres a lot more comparisons in the book. Jon was originally going to be a clock maker like his father. When his father reads about the atomic bomb, he throws Jon's equipment away and tells him that he has to go into physics because clock making is a waste of a future. The chapter ends with a quote from Einstein saying that if he knew the power of atomic energy, he would have been a clock maker instead.
No, no, no, you're wrong here Mr. Bat. You're confused because Einstein sent letters to the U.S., warning that Germany was trying to develop atomic weaponry. Then, Oppenheimer led the Manhattan project to create the atomic bomb. Einstein really didn't have much to do with the study of atomic energy. It was mostly Rutherford and some other guys. Freezey's wrong too. Take out Einstein, though, and you're correct. Notice Rorschach admired Truman but could not stand what Ozzy did. Hypocrite.
it did say the part about recieving Swedish and French love, but not American love. Like coke in green glass bottles- they just dont make it anymore. in the movie. It did have that part.
what are you talking about? Rorschach's voice was perfect! is it not supposed to sound that way, hence the messed up speech bubbles in the comic book? how would you have it sound?
i actually liked rorshach's voice in the movie thought it fit nicely-what i didn't like about the film was that they took the alien aspect out of the movie that kind of ruined it a bit for me-good movie-great book.
Same here. I didn't know the whole story before watching the movie, but researched it afterward. When I found out that the threat was supposed ot be an alien, I flipped out. u.u; So, while I really hate how they did that to Watchmen in the movie, overall I did like the movie a great deal... and, Jackie Earle Haley's voice was dead sexy in a miniskirt as Rorshach. XD (If you don't understand that phrase, please don't ask right away. It's embarassing! XD)
i read the comic before the movie...and let me tell you when u get all the way through the comic and u get a confusing ass speech about an exploded teleported squid u find it to be really dumb and childish...it really is a stretch that i think took away fromt he comic....I felt the movie had an ending better suited to the rest of the great watchmen storyline
He sounds pretty good and this should have been how he sounded-- if this took place in England. I think an English accent would sound a bit silly in New york.
I think it oversimplifies to pick sides and choose Ozymandias or Rorschach as "correct"...
It's hard to believe that Ozymandias' grotesque scheme would do anything but forestall greater catastrophe until a later date. (I imagine he'll have to "intervene" again.)
But Rorchach's objectivism means reducing even the most complex things to black-and-white. I think he welcomes his death at the end, because it lets him be "right" while not having to stick around and figure out what to do next.
Ozymandias plan succeeded, at least in the short term.
And Rorschach was the only one maintaining the sequence of events as they actually transpired, whereas everyone else compromised to promote a useful fallacy.
new to the watchmen. saw the movie yesterday. identified most with Rorschach's character. despite his methods and being labeled a sociopath, he understood justice. i don't get the impression he'd kill an innocent for an "alleged" higher purpose...as arguably the world's smartest man did...the world's most powerful man conceded...then he murdered Rorschach due to his uncompromising character for justice and truth. well...at least Rorschach's journals still exist... ;-)
Rorschach's insanity is what allowed him beyond the limits of the human will, and allowed him to actually live according to his absolute sense of morality.
Absolute moral sensibilities are not bad, as long as the individual recognizes that morality is subjective.
But you're not saying, are you, that if you act according to your own subjective sense of morality, you can't go wrong? Because that pretty well lets everyone off the hook.
As far as I have been able to discover, there is no natural moral imperative. That is to say, no moral mandate inherent to our universe. If there is, we aren't aware of it yet.
So I try not to use terms like "right" "wrong" "good" "bad", these are relative terms, relative to subjective morality.
I think it is more useful to use more descriptive terms like, "creative" and "Destructive".
I think people should be free to "do as they please".
For the most part they will not behave destructively.
I agree that most people would probably act in constructive ways, freed from constraints, but destruction will still follow; you'll never get consensus on whether what's created is of value, and people often want to destroy things they feel are harmful, or are in competition with the things they cherish.
The bigger picture I look at, the more I understand the conclusion that none of it *really* matters. But, to be human, you have to accept the fiction of "rules", and that your life has purpose.
Uh yes, people will choose destructive behaviors on occasion and they will endure the consequences for their course of action.
My point wasn't that nothing matters, what matters is personal, not universal, and though there are overlaps in morality, either complimentary or contradictory, no individual has access to "the truth" or "Rightness".
It's less destructive to give people the liberty to believe and do as they please, than try to enforce their behavior.
Assuming you don't mean just natural consequences (i.e., you decide to light your curtains on fire and your house burns down) those "consequences" come from other people. (You punch someone, and they punch you back.)
Aren't those reactions from other people an attempt to control destructive behavior?
Yes it would be coercive, of course retribution would also be a natural occurrence, not government sponsored enforcement.
I'm not going to defend either action. I personally wouldn't physically harm anyone with violence, and I would not seek retribution through violence or imprisonment. But I do advocate for the freedom for people to work their social interactions out on their own.
I'm not big on violence myself, whether it's individual or governmental. Seems the big question is can you make government work on any kind of large scale—so that you can have sanitation, transportation, and the like—without asking individuals to accede to rules?
I like that a superhero book/movie can make me think about things like this. It's probably Alan Moore's fault that I don't come across a whole lot of comics that really impress me. When he's good, he's really good.
Oh yeah, whether you hate or love Moore's work he forces you to think and feel. V for Vendetta MADE me an Anarchist.
If people want things like sanitation, transportation, etcetera, they will pay for them. Government isn't necessary to provide those services. No coercion necessary.
If an individual doesn't like the policies of a business, then they can choose to invest their custom in a business whose model more reflects their values.
There is still the potential for abuse, but not as much so
snyder said that theres gunna be 3 versions of the dvd, one which is the reg. dvd, another which is a 2 disc extended edit. and a super collectors edit. which has the extended 2 disc one and a bonus dvd of an animated short of the black freighter
I agree. because those parts kept the graphic novel very interesting but it might of made the film too long. As a whole the film was great but its a shame they couldn't put key parts in, but they captured the characters perfectly like Rorschach whose portrayal was phenomenal.
The fans wouldn't complain about things like Captain Metropolis and the Minutemen. Metropolis inspires Ozymandias to embark on his scheme, but the film seemed to hint at his true intentions with him in charge of the meeting.
Cluebert's right about the running time thing. I mean, Lord of the Rings were like three hour long films a piece, but nobody complained.
The DVD/BluRay is gonna have a Dirctors Cut on it. Dont know how much longer the DC is gonna be, but I think I´ve read something about 20-30 minutes longer. Eventually the DC is gonna be around 200min. But I´m not sure of that, but theres gonna be a DC definetely.
saw the movie.... GREAT- but very disappointing the movie was dumbed down for an audience looking for action and removed key things from the novel they added random action shit that didnt agree with the novel they took out every piece of dialouge w/ the newsstand guy AND the WHOLE Tales of the Black Frieghter They only showed those people at the end when no monster came destroying NY but Dr. Manhattan great movie for action but nothing like the book where were any backstories of the MinuteMen?
that was one of my biggest problems with the movie-after all the time and effort spent making it-why not keep the newstand guy around-holli's death-and especially the whole alien/monster aspect of the book which is what made me beleive that a plot like that would work-it would unite all of humanity- the movie was good it was cool but it fell short of great another 20 minutes and another 5 mill to film it would have made it great.
thematically i think the movie ending works, they still unite against something decidedly 'alien' to most of humanity. but i agree, i missed the demon squid.
I highly enjoyed the film. I found it, brilliant, iconic and true to the material. Snyder did the best possible job, that could be done with this book. A few things were changed, but so what? Compared to what was done to Wanted, it's trivial. Movies should stand on their own.
Prejudiced? No, just my opinion and in my opinion it is distracting to the movie. But it doesn't matter, I will not see it, the book is great and in another opinion it should have not been made into a shiny sell out Hollywood film.
Yes, I know. I read the Graphic Novel and I saw the movie yesterday and I was astonished how accurate Snyder transported the Novel onto the big screen. Here and there are some changes but it fits and it rounds it up.
The way the novel was written/drawn was specifically for the book. It was made so that no cinema can ever capture what it did in the book. Certain scenes in book can never be recreacted in any movie.
I will see movie Sunday and i know they changed the ending? But i'm on Moore's side on this one and say that book should of never been made into movie.
Thats true, I thought the Book was unfilmable too, and it is if you want to have the same quality. But thats almost impossible. No movie is as good as the book. Except for Kubricks movies of course.
Considering that I was astonished how good the movie is.
It's different from the book, but its a fantastic movie in its own rights. If you watch it with the intent to get anal retentive over every little change or omission like a lot of the hardcore fanboys are doing, of course you won't like it. I love both the comic and the movie, and I loved the hell out of every second of the film.
Rorshach's voice in movie suits the character better than Alan moore's voice. I think it's an insult to change the ending of the Watchmen comic book in the movie. Obviously, those who read Watchmen know that it was made so that it'd never be imitated by movies, there are scenes that could only be fully shown in a comic book and no cinema can ever capture. How are they going to show those scenes in the movie? They'll skip them?
I think Dave Gibbons is a sell b/c of movie involvement.
i'd like to add that i'm still going to see Watchmen this weekend. I am really curious how the movie will turn out as opposed to the fabulous comic book.
i will see the movie on Sunday and i'm not expecting to be blown away. I know for a fact the movie will never come close to the success or to the greatness of the graphic novel.
i just don't think it should've been made into a movie. Unless you know for sure that you can make a movie better than the book. But in this case it's impossible.
the movie blew me away, and i WAS expecting an amazing film. so with that expectation of yours, i hope u really enjoy it even more then. I really loved it
I imagined it gravelly, hoarse, monotone. Maybe part of it would come from Rorschach forcing his voice to go much lower than normal. I knew a couple of girls that did this, and it sounded a bit painful.
Personally, I imagined it more hoarse and low when I read the comic, but it reminds me of the darkness of the hero when it's done like it is in the movie. Kind of like Batman, brings out the badass of a hero.
Although I saw the trailers, and it changed some of what he said, like "Watchmen"? They never even say that once in the comics... and in the trailer it's said like 2 times. Also I hope they keep his to-the-point-not-proper speech tho'.
I never found Rorschach truly frightening... until I heard this.

lol. so the dark knight, the most critically acclaimed movie of 2008 and gave one of the best performances of the year in heath ledger, is worse than DBE?

Ledger is a horrible actor. Always has been.

No, I just know who I like and who I don't like. I've never heard of or seen the guy who played Goku until this movie. I've never liked Ledger and Bale's performance as Batman is worse than Clooney's.
veloriumcaptain 2 years ago
but still, according to you, a movie that's respectful and faithful to the source material is much worse than a movie that destroyed the characters and gave a big FU to the fans.
my mistake.

WOAH WOAH WOAH NO HELL NO
DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION WAS A BIG SLAP IN THE FACE AND A MIDDLE FINGER TO ALL DB FANS EVER
spoilers:
Goku was a FUCKING demon for Chrissake meaning no super saiyans, and no one going super saiyan ever
The dark knight however was a masterpiece
Great visuals, great story, and great twists
you must be some middle schooler or elementary kid or someone who isn't an old school db fan if you liked the movie because that was my childhood fav. show and they tainted it

Yes, I'm a 20 year old elementary kid...
I was watching DB back when you were too young to know about it probably.
And once again, the only reason TDK got the reviews it did was for the Picasso effect by Ledger. It became overrated with his death.
veloriumcaptain 2 years ago
No even if ledger didn't die it would still be successful why? because hes in another film coming out soon(he died while making that film) And shit load of people were looking forward to the dark knight waaaay before heath ledger's death.
and if you say you watched DB "before i knew about it" your obviously not a true fan BECAUSE NO ONE CAN GO SUPER SAIYAN IN THE FOLLOWING MOVIES why? no super saiyans exist, krillin isn't in the movie, and Goku is a demon rather than an alien.
Detth2you 2 years ago 8
Ledger's death might have added a bit more, but like you said TDK was getting massive amounts of hype before anything even happened with Ledger.

Devilbat vs Freezepop.....!
Get the fuck out and use your inbox.
Debate wise I think Devilbat wins, not because he's so great but because freezepop's final comment was so full of shit and fail. Accusing someone of being illiterate when his grammar at least makes sense makes you look (to quote you) VERY DUMB.
mortred009 2 years ago
Rorschach always strikes me as a bit of a hypocrite... In the book anyway. In the film he's an idealist, whereas in the book he frequently points out that the atom bomb was a positive event as it ended the war, yet at the end, when America is on the recieving end, he can't live with the moral implications...
Grindlyth 2 years ago
In the movie, Dr Manhattan reminds me of Einstein and how his knowledge was manipulated to create the Atom bomb and how the bombing was done to kill millions in the hope to save billions by stopping in the name of 'peace' by stopping the war.
Devilbat 2 years ago
That wasn't his idea. You are dumb.
freezepop100 2 years ago
It's called a parallel. You are dumb.
Devilbat 2 years ago
You are very dumb.
freezepop100 2 years ago
I never said or implied that Dr Manhattan's idea was to kill all those people either.
Einstein's original work was never intended to create a cataclysmic bomb either, so in that sense, he was 'used' too.
That was my point. They worked off that principle and that is why I said its a parallel.
If you know and agree that Dr. Manhattan was supposed to resemble Einstein, then what are you arguing with me for?You are very dumb.
Devilbat 2 years ago
Reread your initial comment, you illiterate prick. It barely makes sense anyway.
freezepop100 2 years ago
There's nothing wrong with what I said you ignrorant baboon.
Devilbat 2 years ago
Also, theres a lot more comparisons in the book. Jon was originally going to be a clock maker like his father. When his father reads about the atomic bomb, he throws Jon's equipment away and tells him that he has to go into physics because clock making is a waste of a future. The chapter ends with a quote from Einstein saying that if he knew the power of atomic energy, he would have been a clock maker instead.
Devilbat 2 years ago
No, no, no, you're wrong here Mr. Bat. You're confused because Einstein sent letters to the U.S., warning that Germany was trying to develop atomic weaponry. Then, Oppenheimer led the Manhattan project to create the atomic bomb. Einstein really didn't have much to do with the study of atomic energy. It was mostly Rutherford and some other guys. Freezey's wrong too. Take out Einstein, though, and you're correct. Notice Rorschach admired Truman but could not stand what Ozzy did. Hypocrite.

i actually liked rorshach's voice in the movie thought it fit nicely-what i didn't like about the film was that they took the alien aspect out of the movie that kind of ruined it a bit for me-good movie-great book.
youenvy 2 years ago
XD)

splarknarg 2 years ago
I think it oversimplifies to pick sides and choose Ozymandias or Rorschach as "correct"...
It's hard to believe that Ozymandias' grotesque scheme would do anything but forestall greater catastrophe until a later date. (I imagine he'll have to "intervene" again.)
But Rorchach's objectivism means reducing even the most complex things to black-and-white. I think he welcomes his death at the end, because it lets him be "right" while not having to stick around and figure out what to do next.
zanseattle 2 years ago
thats the whole point of the book "to be a hero in the real world you would have to be crazy" they were both wrong, thats the point.
jammersharem 2 years ago
They were both right too.
Ozymandias plan succeeded, at least in the short term.
And Rorschach was the only one maintaining the sequence of events as they actually transpired, whereas everyone else compromised to promote a useful fallacy.
Moore is a total genius.
Jcolinsol 2 years ago 3
new to the watchmen. saw the movie yesterday. identified most with Rorschach's character. despite his methods and being labeled a sociopath, he understood justice. i don't get the impression he'd kill an innocent for an "alleged" higher purpose...as arguably the world's smartest man did...the world's most powerful man conceded...then he murdered Rorschach due to his uncompromising character for justice and truth. well...at least Rorschach's journals still exist... ;-)
gittihawk 2 years ago
Rorschach's insanity is what allowed him beyond the limits of the human will, and allowed him to actually live according to his absolute sense of morality.
Absolute moral sensibilities are not bad, as long as the individual recognizes that morality is subjective.
Jcolinsol 2 years ago
But you're not saying, are you, that if you act according to your own subjective sense of morality, you can't go wrong? Because that pretty well lets everyone off the hook.
firestartertwistedfi 2 years ago
As far as I have been able to discover, there is no natural moral imperative. That is to say, no moral mandate inherent to our universe. If there is, we aren't aware of it yet.
So I try not to use terms like "right" "wrong" "good" "bad", these are relative terms, relative to subjective morality.
I think it is more useful to use more descriptive terms like, "creative" and "Destructive".
I think people should be free to "do as they please".
For the most part they will not behave destructively.
Jcolinsol 2 years ago
I agree that most people would probably act in constructive ways, freed from constraints, but destruction will still follow; you'll never get consensus on whether what's created is of value, and people often want to destroy things they feel are harmful, or are in competition with the things they cherish.
The bigger picture I look at, the more I understand the conclusion that none of it *really* matters. But, to be human, you have to accept the fiction of "rules", and that your life has purpose.
zanseattle 2 years ago
Uh yes, people will choose destructive behaviors on occasion and they will endure the consequences for their course of action.
My point wasn't that nothing matters, what matters is personal, not universal, and though there are overlaps in morality, either complimentary or contradictory, no individual has access to "the truth" or "Rightness".
It's less destructive to give people the liberty to believe and do as they please, than try to enforce their behavior.
Jcolinsol 2 years ago
Ah, but the trick is the "consequences" part.
Assuming you don't mean just natural consequences (i.e., you decide to light your curtains on fire and your house burns down) those "consequences" come from other people. (You punch someone, and they punch you back.)
Aren't those reactions from other people an attempt to control destructive behavior?
zanseattle 2 years ago
Yes it would be coercive, of course retribution would also be a natural occurrence, not government sponsored enforcement.
I'm not going to defend either action. I personally wouldn't physically harm anyone with violence, and I would not seek retribution through violence or imprisonment. But I do advocate for the freedom for people to work their social interactions out on their own.
Jcolinsol 2 years ago
I'm not big on violence myself, whether it's individual or governmental. Seems the big question is can you make government work on any kind of large scale—so that you can have sanitation, transportation, and the like—without asking individuals to accede to rules?
I like that a superhero book/movie can make me think about things like this. It's probably Alan Moore's fault that I don't come across a whole lot of comics that really impress me. When he's good, he's really good.
zanseattle 2 years ago
Oh yeah, whether you hate or love Moore's work he forces you to think and feel. V for Vendetta MADE me an Anarchist.
If people want things like sanitation, transportation, etcetera, they will pay for them. Government isn't necessary to provide those services. No coercion necessary.
If an individual doesn't like the policies of a business, then they can choose to invest their custom in a business whose model more reflects their values.
There is still the potential for abuse, but not as much so

ReplicantMan 2 years ago
I agree. because those parts kept the graphic novel very interesting but it might of made the film too long. As a whole the film was great but its a shame they couldn't put key parts in, but they captured the characters perfectly like Rorschach whose portrayal was phenomenal.
Wisey134 2 years ago 2
The fans wouldn't complain about things like Captain Metropolis and the Minutemen. Metropolis inspires Ozymandias to embark on his scheme, but the film seemed to hint at his true intentions with him in charge of the meeting.
Cluebert's right about the running time thing. I mean, Lord of the Rings were like three hour long films a piece, but nobody complained.

To all who missed some parts.

Manhattan great movie for action but nothing like the book where were any backstories of the MinuteMen?
erty768 2 years ago 2
that was one of my biggest problems with the movie-after all the time and effort spent making it-why not keep the newstand guy around-holli's death-and especially the whole alien/monster aspect of the book which is what made me beleive that a plot like that would work-it would unite all of humanity- the movie was good it was cool but it fell short of great another 20 minutes and another 5 mill to film it would have made it great.
youenvy 2 years ago 2
thematically i think the movie ending works, they still unite against something decidedly 'alien' to most of humanity. but i agree, i missed the demon squid.

The way the novel was written/drawn was specifically for the book. It was made so that no cinema can ever capture what it did in the book. Certain scenes in book can never be recreacted in any movie.
