@nubiansista4life....your right! It was Billy Spruill who stated that. Although I do know that, it is Michael Hampton ripping out those formidable guitar riffs. There's one that if I'm. Not mistaken Eddie riff to pieces and if I'm not mistaken it's called "super stupid" Eddie, Michael, black byrd, Glen & Gary those were and are true funk rock guitarist.
Michael Hampton is a great guitar player. Great! I hate the people always try to compare him to Eddie. They are both great in their own right. Eddie's style was unique. On this rendition, it seems that Mike is paying tribute to Eddie. That is the same model guitar that Eddie used to play.
underground is in my opinion the "goldnugget" of music.. they do the thing because they wanna do it and love it.. mainstream is all about money.. little concerts are way better.. rock on dudes love this cover :)
eddie passed this song to mike a long time ago he could'nt have passed the torch on to a better funk rocker mike can play I wish he had more cd's out I have heavy metal funkason i like the cd. wish funkadelic could play more straight up rock concerts
If somebody wants to blame a genre for the rise of shitty music its disco. after disco waned hip hop and "shitty rock" broke through, gone are the days when funk, soul and true rock reigned supreme. Having said that there are some good bands out there with that old soul. They will remain underground never making it because too many people hate this music in favour of lifeless repetitive beats and diluted punk
Music doesnt it exists in an ongoing state of evolution. Music itself is a an unspoken dialogue that has existed for centuries. What it does through the generations is not "get shitty", as you put it, but changes to suit the needs and desires of different people expressing themselves in unique ways based on their individual temporal (or spiritual) experiences.
Say a genre is shit because you don't particularly care for it, and you reveal what you are, a closed minded person.
Only live version I've ever seen that comes anywhere near the distortion of the original? BTW, does anyone know how that was done? The heavy recording from the album, that is. Oh yeah, and Michael Hampton loves to throw in shit @ the end of this song - this time its AC/DC's "Big Balls" at 13:41
wow, well the skill is definitely there, but he seems to really be missing the soul and emotion found when eddie plays it. Also he sticks too closely to the original song, obviously it's a cover but it seems too much like he just copied it and that never
(rarely) makes a good cover. If you don't add your own flavor, then you're competing with the original and in this case...no one beats the original.
ok explane that improv he did like in the second half of the song... not enough flavor for you?
and dude eddie was good, but like he was hi half the dam time and didn't play with p funk for a while, that's why they replaced him at first, cus he was hi off his ass more than everyone else
The whole band was high all the time, not just Eddie. My people see them everytime they come to town to this day. Mike replaced Eddie when Eddie went to jail for assault.
money and the business side of the music industry has completely sucked the originality and innovative qualities of music nowadays, and anyone who actually does something new and interesting gets no radio play and subsequently few sales. it's time we had a hard look at ourselves, and ask ourselves whether music and business can really co-exist; cause my bet is they can't.
Why do we waste time comparing? Jimi was Jimi. Eddie was Eddie. Hampton is Hampton. Prince is Prince. Ernie Isley is Ernie Isley. Santana is Santana. All play/played great in their own right, which is better than all of us!! Doesn't have to be a big debate. If you don't like what you hear then click your favorite artist and enjoy him. Peace
I totally agree with you...being a guitar player myself. Different styles are just that. It bes-peakes the soul of the innovator and the purity from within. This song shall travel on and manifest positivity to nations. IT IS A BLACK THANG!
Nowadays you NEVER see a (young) black guy playing guitar, it just isn't "G" enough.... It's a shame too, some of our greatest guitarist have been black.
Depends where you hand out. I see many black people play some great guitar... But then again in Southern California everyone plays the guitar. But like you said, its dying off. Everyone is either into rap or Metal/emo junk. Hard to find alot of great artists these days. Nothing but crap on the radios...
Man this was a tribute to the fact that George's brother was found dead and when they found him maggots was eating his face and head and plus the fact that George told Eddie to play like your mom just died and then in the end play like u found out she was alive.
Hey I'm not knocking him, I mean he is still alive to play this great song for us. But I stand by what I said, he is playing, Jimi and Eddie were SINGING thru their guitar. Yes this version is great, but lets see Hampton come up with ANYTHING even close to this.
people often discredit people with technical skill as being better than Jimi Hendrix by saying Jimi has more "emotion", "soul", and "feel", but in my opinion, if you are going to base it on emotion, soul, and feel, Eddie Hazel beats Jimi Hendrix
Let's hear those of you who had something negative to say about this tune play something one hundredth as amazing, mind-blowingly psychedelic, and emotional as "Maggot Brain". This song embraces something intangible... something cosmic. The haunting melody grabs you and hurls you into the depths of every feeling you've ever felt. If you can claim it doesn't, go buy a fucking MCR CD and admit you know dick when it comes to good music.
no emotion? you must not know the story behind this improv. Clinton told the guitarist to improvise a song. play the first half like his mother just died, and the second half like he discovered she was alive again. pretty fucking emotional if you ask me :)
Thats the true difference between Eddie and Michael. Eddie played with so much emotion that sometimes he would cry in the studio. He played this song from his soul, Michael Hampton plays it like any other guitar song.
I really have nothing to say to you DEAallday, you really discust me. Music can sing emotion at anytime and anywhere. If you are pathetic enough to call yourself a musician I suggest you stop and become something that would fit you much better. For example, an operator, or a bank loans officer.
I like Hamptons version, but he tries to be a technical guitarist, Hazel had soul!! I mean really, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Hazel SANG through their Guitars, Mike Hampton just PLAYS his.
Sick Who would have know the MAGGOT BRAIN. I seen this live with Geroge clinton back in 94, three days of reggae, and funk out in the wilderness camping, Where you say---Regge Music Festaval, The Rainbow People ruined it for every one though, they destroyed everything parasites, trash, lice in public pools, etc.

Hi Punkgunner,
To answer your question, George Clinton placed Eddie Hazel in a room surrounded by amps and told him to, "Play as if your mother died".
The many many amps probably helped with the over all sound.

it was fuzzface connected to a wah pedal, then at the end of the recording he used a fuzz pedal that was low on battery
