Frontal attack against a superior phalanx? one that is covered with archers at that...suicide! Why not hit the archers with your cav, then send peltasts on to the spartan hoplites and outflank them with your pikemen. Hell, even spartans are vulnerable from the back like all phalanx. Hit & run! .

. i would have some archers. first try to soften up that line of defence. have a small group of infantry to attack at a specific spot. if that dusnt work retreat.aim your archers at 1 spot in the defence to break the line. then when your infantry attack, have your archers keep a distance but keep on shooting that 1 area you attacked, once u break the line there cavalry will attack, but, there hole in the rear is exposed, have ur horses get in there and flank them, now u send de rest of ur ar

ok, he had a very good setup. But, in reality it was really weak.

Mass archers (u probably weren't allowed elephants) combined with cavalry and heavy sword infantry is what i use. (cav archers if possible) first u soften for like, thirty minutes, or until they break formation. Then u bring in something to smash them, like some heavy cavalry. U IMMEDITEDLY retreat after the charge. then, repeat those two steps until he gets fed up and pulverized.

the problem with falanx was when u put enough pressure on 1 falanx unit it would break and fall apart causing catastrophe all over the line, break the line and then widen this breach with other units like ur cavalry and victory will be yours

That Spartan Army had a very weak formation. It wasn't flexible at all. After 2+ years of playing with Phalanxes, classic box formations are terrible. There's no commanding involved. You're betting the whole battle on the initial formation. That = bad. A decent Roman commander with a diverse force of equal size would annihlate that measly Spartan formation.

Good, good fight. Your friend has turned defeat into a victory just by a knife's edge at the last minute, when the numbers shrunk and when it all depends on quality not quantity.

a nice way to do it without using the extremely powerful seige weapons or archers, is to use the romans. you send your cavalry in on a head long charge which is followed by some legionaries in the testudo. The cavalry may be killed but it would mess the phalanx up so much that your legionaires, just in behind, can smash through the phalanx. from then on its just a simple matter of killing the spears while their backs are turned.

That box formation is good especially on a hill. I would probably invest in some mounted archers to distract their Archers. Then using Legionaries i'd try and overwhelm a small portion of their lines large enough to avoid being flanked, then using Calvary drive a wedge into their formation. Flood the rest of your infantry into the hole, and gut their spearmen from the inside out. That is admiting they don't form a double spear line on you in the mean time.

Why would that make him a newb? Its a good tactic that works especially if you have archers and/or "swordsmen" (for lack of better word) in the middle. Its not being cheap because to come up with it is smart and all it is, is using a strategic advantage is all.

It is newby because it works TOO well. It is completely overpowered. I once watched a battle between two clan-mates of mine- they both used spear boxes. The end result was an hour long wait before the host terminated the game because whoever came out of the formation would have lost.

the answer to spear boxes? Onagers, archers, or elephants. If you know you're going up against spear units, then get a few of those, and you can break up their box. Also, if you have spear units too, you can still move while staying in formation. if you group the units and then right click and drag you can tell them to move the exact formation somewhere else!

Onagers and elephants aren't allowed in usual multiplayer games, and Greece (who are the only effective spear boxers) have cretian archers inside the box, so that they can destroy any archers that you may have before they can get into range.

For hannibalz0r in the 6 comment, if u search on the internet more u will finde that the macedonians were the most powerful army in the world at that time, the Greeks were nothing against them, if Alexsander wouldnt have died god nows what would have happened. The spears were the most advance battle tactic for the macedonians also combined with the cavalry.

He is talking about in-game. And he is right, as well. Carthage can destroy Macedon if used correctly- sacred band doing the fighting with Poenii inf preventing cavalry flankings while sacred band cavalry flank.

That strategy is particularly effective vs. Greece on 15k per army, as general's armoured bodyguard is too expensive to be used effectively- depriving Greece of any actually effective cavalry.
