Wow, I have a ten year old and a six year old who both want to learn drums. Lucky thing I can show them examples on the internet! I first heard of this chap while listening to the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
In 1984 when I was living in Guam, I ordered set of Tama Imperialstar drums with an Artstar snare from Japan. The music store did not have that set available and ordered it direct from the factory. Without thinking much, I bought a Billy Cobham album (can't recall the name, but the album came in a paper bag inserted in the sleeve). After listening to the first track, I wanted to throw my set off the cliff. My wife assured me that it would be okay and accept Billy's talent. He is AMAZING!!!!
@binskiboi yet he is more musical than you will ever comprehend. try looking away from the mirror every now and then, you might be able to see past the SLOP :)
@binskiboi It really sounds like you know what you're talking about when you say one of the all time top ten drummers in the world is sloppy. Were you born an idiot or did it take you some time to reach that status?
@McYaballow actually i've understood he's ambidextrous, he's a leftie with the ability to play equally well right-handedly. And that is pretty damn well. ;) also, he has e.g. the ability to control "perfectly" his leading hand in fills. He's just awesome in every way. ^^
@McYaballow, arobdrummer is correct that billy Cobham is left handed. He plays a "righty" set up which I kind of wished I work on more when I was younger since I too am a lefty but I play a left handed set up.
Billy's da baddest. He used to let me call him in Panama and ask him how to teach a right-handed kid to play open-handed on a right-handed kit. I've also seen him take a bad musical situation and turn it around so he made everyone look good. Go see him if you ever get a chance!
I saw him at a clinic in Rockford, IL when I was a kid. Didn't know who he was at the time but the flyer for the clinic had his GIANT, triple bass Tama kit and I knew I HAD to go see it! I even taped the whole thing with a boom box & he did, like a 40 minute drum solo. Lost the tape years ago--dang!
@mypulsereverberates .... check out Jo Jo Mayer`s secret weapons vid ... he talks about how to go between french grip and german grip ... i.e. finger control to wrist and finger control ... also , peter erskine has a warm up routine that I have started using ... 8 with each hand ...then 7 , 6 , 5 , 4 , 3 , 2 , 1 ..then back up to 8 ..then back down again ..etc etc .... after a while i started feeling a natural rebound while doing this exercise ...it was a nice lead in to finger control for me
Yea, my Dad helped a friend create and direct a ballet performance of Cobham's Spectrum album in Ithaca, NY back in the 70's or 80's. He got to sit down and chat with Billy and he was great. Got his autograph and address sitting in a frame on my shelf!!
that"s why he is the man with the golden sticks!!! He"s the best drummer i grew-up listening to,besides harvey mason,of course the late tony williams!!!!

Excuse me while I play singles faster and more evenly than any of you can while changing grips and also conversing normally.

There is some great musicality in that slop. And are you trying to say that orchestral snare drummers and drum set players are the same?

Nayr5555 1 year ago
@Nayr5555 He plays both ways
Kindredspirit5 1 year ago
@Nayr5555 he's actually left handed, if you see him play his kit he has his ride on his left side like lenny white and uses open handed playing
arobdrummer 1 year ago
@arobdrummer why does everyone say BC is left-handed? he's a natural righty, he just plays the drum left-handed style.
