It is a hemi in that the Tatra V8 has hemispherical heads, but so did many Peugeot 4s and English Daimler V8s, and some older Toyota 4s as well not to mention Jaguar inline 6s and V12s. Hemispherical combustion chambers are by no means unique to Chrysler, even in American cars, Duesenberg, Mercer, and a few others had them as well. The current Chrysler Hemis have semi hemi heads, because of smog regulations they couldn't use a full bowl shaped combustion chamber like the old ones.
@vapno92 "Hemi" word generally used to describe a hemispherical form combustion chambers. If you are talking about "Chrysler LLC HEMI®", it is a different world. Chrysler is currently gives this name to the non-real-hemi engines too.
@Crazymajkys Calm down, brother. How about take a look at this drawing: goo . gl / jHWiQ (Remove the spaces).
@CORVAIRWILD It is Tatra! Here in Slovakia every 5th car is rear engined and i have seen lots of these Tatra 603-s there. BTW my friend have 3 pieces of these Tatra V8 engines
beautiful cars =) I believe it was somewhere in the USA ? And if you loved Tatra, you would probably love czech Skoda too. It is shame you can't buy one in the USA. Last time I was in the USA, I haven't seen anything like czech well built car ...
Hey!Yall car restorers out ar.I got a 1966 Monza I'm trying to restore & its hard to find parts fer it.Please,if ya have any ideas on whare ta find parts I may not know 'bout, let me know.My e-mail is confederate97@hotmail.com.Thanks!
i have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old GM Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
@psychotikpaisano … Tatra is the third oldest car manufacturer … their trucks in 1898 were running on gasoline (cause Diesel was not invented yet) … If you dig deep enough … back to 30's T97 Tatra … you will find out why Porsche Carrera had rear mounted air-cooled flat engine … Porsche designed VW Beatle based on the T97 and later first Porsche based on the same layout … eventually Tatra sued and won money from VW … but the most interesting model was T77 with Cd 0.212 ...

@CORVAIRWILD Just started work on it. 4spd posi 140 horse. Saving it from oblivion. Typical Oregon (where I'm at now) car with all the rust you'd expect. Got a sweet 65 straight rust free Nevada car without running gear as a body donor, or is it Donnor (gonna cannabalize it, I crack myself up).
I don't know about your 4bbl conversion on the Vair, looks like a lot of carb to me. My first car was a Vair , it's was a 64 turbo. I had another convertalbe like yor's , I traded a Honda 90 and 75 dollars for it , it had a clutch out. The last was a 66 110 with an automatic. The damn things are addicting, I eased off with air cooled VWs and still own an old BMW I ride the snot out of. That Tatra was a tasty looking piece , it's pretty.
I know, the carb is too big... I have a Weber that needs a progressive 2ndary conversion, or maybe I'll put a stock carb on and see how it works with the Crown EFlow...
I have MANY vids showing my Spyder whistling away!!!
The style did not change between the '50's and the '70's because the factory took back old ones to make them into 'new' ones. To note, the engines in the rear and the V-8/ swing axles made for a very tricky handling car in a lot of cases. But if one knew to handle one, they could really make time around a track, I witnessed an early '70's sample really going around a track. The '49 Lincoln looked sad eyed because they were supposed to have hideaway lights, redesigned to be conventional units.
Things existed in the past for a reason and ceased to exist for a reason as well. They were inferior to the new parts made available in the current time period...
I hate the way old cars look. I see no point in driving a piece of crap around that's going to break down and have no way to fix it due to inability to get parts...
actually, most american cars are very easy to get parts for, its the foreign cars that are more difficult, and that tatra would be very difficult, becuase they never sold them over here i believe. and your allowed your own opinion, but many of u love old cars, id rather drive an old car than the 90's hondas all my fellow high school friends are getting.
The point wasn't to say parts were easy/hard to come by for old cars like that.
The point was that old cars are outdated and inferior to today's newer technology. Especially well built and engineered ones by companies like Lexus/Toyota.

Air-cooling isn't good for cold weather driving due to poor heater performance. And sometimes you get engine fumes leaking into the air ducts.
