I love Caballe but for Maria Stuarda, my first was Beverly Sills (she was marvelous) Caballe has a lot of flair and is equally good though but Sills does it for me as far the 3 Donizetti Tudor Queens - Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Deveraux's Queen Elisabetta

She's wonderful but was surpassed in January at La Scala by Mariella Devia, whose sweetness of color and breath control (at nearly 60!)were nothing less than miraculous.
Of particular note in the prayer, is the sustained high note (4:37 to 4:57), which requires an immense amount of lung power! You should hear this same Act 3 sung by Beverly Sills! It will blow your mind!

I was in a production of MARIA STUARDA
with her in 1973 in the US and can tell
you that this scene stopped the show
