err i don't remember much beyond nintendo power, game pro and electronic gaming monthly.i do remember owning copies of magazines with coverage on the soon-to-be released FF VII and FF VIII.i'm pretty sure i used to own some Nintendo Power issues, but i don't anymore.
I used to subscribe to almost all these magazines back in the early-mid 90's. I had a nice collection too. Sadly I don't still have them:(. My favorites were probably EGM, Gamepro, Game Players...shoot, I liked them all. Anyway, this is cool man! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Very Nice Collection
I'm 16 and own 2 NES, SNES, 2 Sega Genesis, 2 sega dream cast, 2 N64, 4 gameboys, gamboy advance, nintendo ds i, xbox, xbox 360, 2 ps1, 2 ps2, ps3, nintendo gamecube, wii
original nintendo power and dreamcast magazine. unfortunately they got water damage and no longer have them. but still have the demo discs from dreamcast mag at least
I watched this and thought of how the Fortune Magazine Company has talked about going digital only. That really sucks because you can't take digital every where. I remember keep magazines from years ago because of all the game cheats I could use, but now without the access to play alot of those games they still hold a place in my heart because I remember how much they meant to me. Sadly alot of them are gone, but the memories won't fade.
Johnny I am personally 14 and am a video game fan. I buy magazines and only have one console and barely talk to my friends and try to avoid looking at new info for a game I want to play. I am an old scool game fan, maybe that's because of my mom though
The part where you talk about how you can download a game, but not physically own the cartridge and box.........couldn't agree with you more man. All about that nostalgia
i never had the luxury of a console back in the day, i had a c64 but that was old by then (1990 ) there was a recession in the uk and i was very envious of everyone elses consoles. and game magazines were just in my paper-round money price range, but as a kid just made me even more jealous ><
What I meant to say was,Video Game Magazines were so fucking awesome back in the days, they were our #1 source for our gaming news and thirst for all things gaming,Internet what fucking Internet that was a distant dream,oh the days of calling all the local bookstores every week and asking do you have the the new issue of EGM or VG&CE etc..... I miss the good ole days........
Luckily today they have Retro Gamer magazine now, It's pricey, but it's very nostalgic.
I used to buy the Nintendo Powers at Video game stores back in the mid 90's and they would sell all the magazines for a penny since they were a month past due.
I'm with you, man- I loved the magazines and never felt right throwing them out or giving them up. My favorites were EGM and PSM. PSM before it got bought out. I'm talking the unofficial Playstation magazine w/ editor Chris Slate and his wacky gang of writers & players. Ever see Atari Age. A lot of these can be found online in various places as PDFs- archived for future generations.
Tips and tricks used to release a yearly codebook, i ate that shit up!. But, EGM gave me all the info for new games and reviews of good or bad games. Although as a child, i could care less about the 'rating' all i wanted to see was the photos. anyway...Tips and tricks for the game room, EGM for the bathroom.
GamePro, Electronic Game Monthly, Nintendo Power, and Dreamcast are the magazines I grew with. Now I'm into Game Informer and still Nintendo Power; also a new one I discovered called Game Developer magazine, its a magazive that gives talks about the industry, the creaters, ways of making games and giving tips.
GameFan was the best Hardcore Gamers Magazine in the US period. It's too bad they've had so many falling outs...but they are back! Although it's pretty hard to find. I get it @ Barnes & Knoble.
I still have every issue of EGM, GameInformer, Gamepro, and PSM I ever collected over the years. It's interesting to go back and read articles on something like the speculation of what would happen in Final Fantasy 9, or titles like Sonic Xtreme that never even saw the light of day. It's also cool to look back and notice hidden gems you'd completely forgotten about. I feel ya. I feel ya.
i have a ps1,ps2,ps3...and thats it lol...and an nes that is very unusuall, instead of a...well a console,i have this weird keyboard that has a nes cartrige loader above it,and right beside the loader theres like the power button, and when we was kids,we used to call everything sega mega,we never heard of nintendo and all those companies, untill i got my ps1 so we called it sony...lol
im a hybrid my friend i do play a lot of recent games but im working on trying to buy the things i didn't live to see I ACTUALLY INHERITED A MODEL 1 GENESIS WITH GHOULS AND GHOSTS :D i actually have on my ipod the music from the first four lvls of ghouls and ghosts
I still have my mags dating back to the early 80's we were quite lucky in the UK that we had multiple format games mags like CVG (computer & video games) from I think 1981. Then in the late 80s the was Zero and Ace both good mags. Great Video
Nintendo power all the way! Never did subscribe but I did manage to get some old copies when the public library decided to clean out their storage. A little beat up but still cool
Do you have Expert Gamer issue 66, from December 1999? Resident Evil 3 Nemesis is on the cover, and inside is a walkthru for RE 3 and RE 2. One page had a comparison of Nemesis vs Tyrant, listing their favorite band, candy, etc. I know I used to have it but could never find it.
My dad kept a few of his gaming magazines. I threw away the only one i had. It showcased the Ultra 64. I now regret throwing it away. Recently i have been looking for retro gaming mags at book stores. Of course the magazines are used. I will be showing the old gaming magazines in my house in a week or so.
I agree with everything. By far, my favorite was GameFan. I remember when they had Joe M. doing covers and they were probably THE best covers on any game magazine.
@abehammy- I hope they will stay true to what their name means. Uncompromising.
@JohnBasedowYoda-Gamefan were diehard. They had an untouchable art direction that continued with each start and stop that team had. I forget the different names of each mag....but you always knew it was them right up to present day as PLAY Magazine.
I remember to have a copy of gamefun,the ff7 issue,loads of magazines from the uk,now I live on Switzerland,they don't have uk video games magazines,only console + from France,is a good one,but the only one.witch is sad.
the golden age may be over for good, but hopefully retro gamers keep the 80's the. 90's, magazines, and all else from the golden age of gaming still alive
Anyone willing to part with the Battle Toads Double Dragon the Ultimate Team and Batman Returns,Nintendo Power issues and NP issue 144? Also some old Gamefan Mags too.
dude i love your videos man especially this one! i do that too....look back on older issues for refrences and for nastalgia's sake! awesome video dude keep it up!
I think slowly the information in the magazines is trickling into the Internet. Not just the tips of pressing certain buttons to get extra lives, but the review scores development information, release date posters guides that were available and such, are now at least referenced online. That's one of the good things about Wikipedia they combine the information from these and other sources, and these sites tell you about all this other stuff that was available for the games.
PSM is my favorite magazine, and the one that I own the most of. I like EGM, Nintendo Power, and Expert Gamer as well, but I only own a handful of those combined.
Very good observations about fans of video games, i grew up in the 90s loving reading magazines, i preferred Tips & Tricks over EGM and the others, and the gamers today have it easy and marketing video games is very much different, and even reading video game magazines they dont seem as good as they were before the boom of Internet as a source of news. i'm glad to have the memories of reading video game magazines growing up
Favorite probably Sega Dreamcast one, or Gamefan. Can't compare today's mags to back then though. They get paid for giving high reviews now. And it's true back then it was us alone or with friends and it was great times, but today it's vs millions online and internet. But then againt I discovered you online... So it's a good thing right? lol. I do miss the ld days though, they were simple but I think I Appreciated games more back then.
I have a box full and that is too much. The only reason I kept them was I thought there might be some graphics/pics that I could use for a collage or something
i really liked EGM because it had the newest street fighter and ARCADE game news from sushi-x and on a small page written by Quartermann. i also enjoyed the high quality print paper of Gamefan. i have a subscription to nintendo power from 2002 till 2015!! retro gamer is an awesome mag but is only published in the UK. i also remember that ultra game players magazine issue you are holding up. i used to buy those in 1989 and take them to school to read instead of doing classwork, haha
I also liked how some magazines even gave a pretty complete walkthrough for some games too. I still have my mailed copy of Vol. 37 of Nintendo Power, and in it is what's effectively a full walkthrough to Metroid II on the GameBoy.
I still drag magazines like this out when I need help in an area of a game I have trouble with.
Amazing video with a lot of insight on the gamers' past. Too bad I got rid of all my old mags. I'm glad I was around at the time to enjoy the street fighter 2 popularity.
I collect game mags too. They are also good for RESEARCH as well. EGM, EGM2, Gamepro and Play are great. To answer your question, my all time is GAMEFAN!!!
I'm a video game fan of old and new. I personally likke Nintendo Power. My first issue was in 05 with Zelda The Minish Cap as the cover. I think I could have collected 1 pint of drool.
i miss the days of running to my mailbox after school to see if i got the new EGM, Tips & Tricks, or Gamepro. I had such a huge collection of gaming mags going back to the early 90's but my damn mom threw them out when she moved. im now trying to rebuild that collection.
The mags that are left now are a joke, they are underfunded catalogs for gamestop now. All the good ones have folded but EGM is coming back with alot of the old crew so that is a plus.
Back in the 32/64 bit era I had a SUBSCRIPTION to EGM(2) - Not the regular EGM. At the time they had the most Saturn coverage as well as the most Sega arcade coverage out of the mags in my area. As the Saturn's fortunes wained, I moved on to Next Generation (the most well written of the old mags).I also bought a few ULTRA Game Players issues (that's how I got my X-mas NiGhts disc. The most useful mag of that era was TIPS AND TRICKS. They had arcade news and codes for older systems. Great Vid
My older brother had nintendo power. When you look back you can see some funny things, like when Conker's Bad Fur Day was in early development and it was a happy-go-lucky world where Conker collected acorns. I remember the first screenshots of LOZ:OOT...it looks really horrible, with a 3D version of the NES-style Link.
Mine was probably Nintendo Power. That was the only one I ever liked to read. When I was younger I used to be a fulltime Nintendo and Sony fan. I couldn't really get my hands on the Playstation magazines, but there were Nintendo Powers all over the place. I remember just going to Wal-Mart, into the electronics section to take a copy of Nintendo Power and just look through the whole thing. Amazing experience.
Wow I almost shed a tear watching this video lol. I even own that very same DC magazine you had in your hands, I remember I bought it specifically because of an enclosed GD-disc full of demos and videos. Being puertorrican, I read mostly hispanic publications (Club Nintendo magazine from Venezuela and later from Mexico) and SuperJuegos (from Spain, my favorite ever, super hardcore with lots of info from the japan scene and GREAT unbiased reviews).
I never was too into american mags (language barrier+twice as expensive compared to hispanic ones), but I liked EGM because of it's HUGE size and great overall quality. I'm proud to say though that I learned most if not all of my english by reading american videogame magazines ^^. Because of the internet and the dissappearance of my favorite mag (SuperJuegos) I don't buy mags anymore, unfortunately.
I still get that game informer mag because of that gamestop deal, but I honestly don't like how they are all AMERICAN GAMES RULE and they seem to despise everything from japan. I don't even like the direction the gaming industry is heading, I would gladly stay living in the gaming-glorious 90's and early 00's for the rest of my life. Sorry for the long series of comments but you REALLY hit me with your video!
Totally! Gamefan were the best for screen shots and little walkthroughs, plus they turned me onto the import scene. I think it was the cover art that made me buy my first issue ,with Earthworm Jim on the cover.Whats funny is how well they were made! With glue binding on the spine and not staples like Gamepro so its my only old school mags that survived all these years.
they are coming back they said they are making a new portable system i forgot what it is called look it up its in some claw machines in london well that what it says on the internet any way so yeah go look it up if you want
I liked Game Players the best. I loved how all the editors picked on eachother and they had the pretend "BOX" you'd get thrown in during the week if Bill didn't like your opinion. Just an overall cool magazine which I think turned into IGN.
For me in the UK.... Computer and Video Games (CVG) or perhaps Gamesmaster. I would say 'Sega Saturn Magazine', but they fucked me over with a prize I won fair and square for my star letter.
oh man I remember my first video game magazine! It was Nintendo Power and it had the photo of the guy holding a vampire head, and I just thought "WOAH" and picked it up, I wish my mom didn't throw them out years ago, and I never understood why she did that, i always had the shelf in my room for them so its not like they got in anyones way...
i believe that was it, i never got the first, but i got that and was hooked, though also the store always had out of date magazines or they just never stocked the next months
Great vid HappyConsoleGamer! I feel the exact same way about video game magazines as you. I have a huge collection as well. Though there is an awesome website on the net that specializes in scanning ENTIRE issues of video game magazines. It's called Retro Mags, everyone should check it out!
Doesn't ANYONE like Nintendo Power? I mean, sure, it only focused on Nintendo and all the others focused on all the companies, but c'mon! It was the first game magazine! Give Nintendo some credit!
Yea! Nintendo Power was the shit! The first 100 were simply amazing, 100-150 were decent with the release of the N64 and then after that it went down the crapper.
I just love the creativity and art style of the oldies though.
Games Master was pretty awesome back when it started but Super Play and Total! were my favorites, Mean Machines Sega was probably on a par with those for me.
Gameinformer is a great magazine for video game updates. i only have 1 year sub of all the 2007 issues. but man it was my 1st magazine sub! it was worth playing for the whole year. nice videos.
I used to have a subscription to Mean Machines Sega despite not owning a Saturn at the time. When the new consoles came out I just didn't bother cancelling it. It was a shame it ended when it did, cos that was an entertaining read, even if the real exciting news was reading about the N64 in Nintendo mags :D Ah Memories!
Being relativly young, the first video magazine I remember is OPM (PS1), I liked the magazine but I think it was the first (non-pc) magazine to have demo's, I didnt keep the magazines for very long but I still have some of the demo disks and I kept getting magazines up until I got an Xbox 360 just to get demos (the internet tookover), Magazines having long been replaced by the internet. Though I want to get a subscription to PC Gamer still, love there work.
I have EGMs from 1989 (issue 11) thru 2005 including one from 1994 with a very short article (one paragraph only) talking about how Sony was deciding to making a system called the P.S.X. at the time. My first issue of EGM was issue 17 (Nov. 1990) that had a screen shot as a cover of Super Mario Bros 4 (Super Mario World). I had a Subscription to Nintendo Power a total 5 times thru out the years starting 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 2005
I loved GameFan, but it was so expensive that I couldn't buy that many (and it died). EGM was my go to mag though. I got that one every single month. Anyone remember EGM2? The Clinton years must have had the money flowing really well for that to exist.
I have every copy of Next Generation so yeah I guess that'd be my fav. 2nd fave though was Gamefan. It was from GF that I truly discovered games and systems from foreign countries.
the 90's ones were the best. i love going back and reading mags from the dawn of the Playstation and Saturn and N64 when there was still so much uncertainty with
3D games. the articles were all like "sony is getting into nintendo and sega territory, do they have what it takes to make in the videogame industry?"
or my favorite, when they were previewing FF7 like "this is the make it or break it game for square, will FF7 live up to the hype?" haha if they only knew!!
I really miss the old days when I was still a kid and would read something in a magazine and get all hyped up and have to wait til the next school day to go tell everyone.
I think keeping all the old games magazines is a great idea. Reading them is just uber nostalgia and you can easily find games that you missed at the time. Plus it's good just have them just to sort of archive it all. it is history as you said!
I have a lot of old magazines myself. Just recently, I bought a Sega Saturn with some games. I dug in my collection to find two issues of Tips & Tricks that had a little guide for Panzer Dragoon Saga. I also found some issues of Game Fan that I had with some Saturn reviews. Every now and then, I find myself looking for certain old issues of magazines. It really does take me back to that time.
Kinda late, but, Gamepro was always my fav growing up. It seems alot of the Retro shows dont like game pro, and i just dont see why.
and you were so right, the fact that i had a sub. for Gamepro made me the man at school. People would ask me nearly every day "dude, did the new gamepro come in? If so can i take it to my next class, i will be really careful with it i promis!"
I had the entire collection of EGMs until I moved out of my parents' house. In a 4 months time, I go back to get some more of my stuff, and my pop had thrown out every single LAST ONE OF THEM. I've since started collecting them through ebay, but DAMN, it's getting expensive!
I cant remember the last time I read one I collected a lot of PS2 ones I cant remember the name but it had a differnt couldered heading on every issue I still like to look at the old ones where the covers are like "Final Fantasy VII - Is it any good?"
well im from romania theres to major gaming magazines PC GAMES and my favorite LEVEL i still remeber when i saw it the first time a classmate bought it too school we gathered all around the magazine and was amazed theres an magazine dedicated only for games , i still buy em today i found out about soo many games from em and made me look at games from diferent perspectives without em i wouldnt be the same gamer i am today.
My favorite mag was Gamepro back in the day. They've been going downhill over the last several years, but in the late 90's and early 2000's I enjoyed reading it more than actually playing games.
Cool show, found it at random... I used to keep my mags too, stacks and stacks like that since I was a kid. As far back as jackin' FFII on SNES issue of Nintendo Power from the library
My favorite wes definitely Gamefan, for the reasons you stated... it really shaped my views on gaming as a teenager, and I think contributed alot to the culture of gamers like us. I even had that specific Legend of Oasis issue you held up.
Finally had to ditch 'em though... too many moves. Gave 'em to my cousin.
hmm, favourite mag, well my uncle was a gamer in his younger years (he still plays some now, but only when I ask him 2 :D) and he had old issues of the swedish version of nintendo power, but here it was just called "Nintendo" XD
There was comics, cheats, reviews, yeah exactly like nintendo power, and he gave those 2 me :D Captain N comics and all that.
Then there was a playstation magazine long ago here in sweden that i enjoyed :D
EGM and GamePro were the best back in the '90s. Today, not so much...

I think slowly the information in the magazines is trickling into the Internet. Not just the tips of pressing certain buttons to get extra lives, but the review scores development information, release date posters guides that were available and such, are now at least referenced online. That's one of the good things about Wikipedia they combine the information from these and other sources, and these sites tell you about all this other stuff that was available for the games.

yeah gamers in the past can play with 1-3 friends on one console
while gamers in the present can play with 256 (on MAG anyway) people online in 256 consoles wow

But I have a question, which magazine do you recommend today?
For the reasons you stated I have been looking into subscribing to a magazine so that 10 years from now I can feel the same way.

i really liked EGM because it had the newest street fighter and ARCADE game news from sushi-x and on a small page written by Quartermann. i also enjoyed the high quality print paper of Gamefan. i have a subscription to nintendo power from 2002 till 2015!! retro gamer is an awesome mag but is only published in the UK. i also remember that ultra game players magazine issue you are holding up. i used to buy those in 1989 and take them to school to read instead of doing classwork, haha
scir91 2 years ago
I also liked how some magazines even gave a pretty complete walkthrough for some games too. I still have my mailed copy of Vol. 37 of Nintendo Power, and in it is what's effectively a full walkthrough to Metroid II on the GameBoy.
I still drag magazines like this out when I need help in an area of a game I have trouble with.

My 2nd time watching this video. I can relate so well as I'm near your age. It was an event back then when the new EGM came out.
You read EGM all month, over & over, brought it to school & read it there.
I remember that SFII EGM you showed.
That's great you kept yours, I tossed all mine in the late 90's. :(
Gamefan was great, & I loved Next Generation for a couple years in the mid 90's.

also EGM #1 sells for $250 on Ebay so yeah alot of those mags are worth money. alot of old EGM's and Gamefans go for $15-99 dollars.

i miss the days of running to my mailbox after school to see if i got the new EGM, Tips & Tricks, or Gamepro.
MatticusFinch1820 2 years ago
I do remember a time when I was checking out game mags for Virtua Fighter 3, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and the M2 console..........

Being puertorrican, I read mostly hispanic publications (Club Nintendo magazine from Venezuela and later from Mexico) and SuperJuegos (from Spain, my favorite ever, super hardcore with lots of info from the japan scene and GREAT unbiased reviews).
hsb17 2 years ago
(cont.)
I never was too into american mags (language barrier+twice as expensive compared to hispanic ones), but I liked EGM because of it's HUGE size and great overall quality. I'm proud to say though that I learned most if not all of my english by reading american videogame magazines ^^. Because of the internet and the dissappearance of my favorite mag (SuperJuegos) I don't buy mags anymore, unfortunately.
hsb17 2 years ago
I still get that game informer mag because of that gamestop deal, but I honestly don't like how they are all AMERICAN GAMES RULE and they seem to despise everything from japan. I don't even like the direction the gaming industry is heading, I would gladly stay living in the gaming-glorious 90's and early 00's for the rest of my life. Sorry for the long series of comments but you REALLY hit me with your video!

Diehard GameFan was my favorite, followed by Next Generation
Present day I only subscribe to PLAY.

Yea! Nintendo Power was the shit! The first 100 were simply amazing, 100-150 were decent with the release of the N64 and then after that it went down the crapper.
I just love the creativity and art style of the oldies though.

I used to have a subscription to Mean Machines Sega despite not owning a Saturn at the time. When the new consoles came out I just didn't bother cancelling it. EGM ruled back in the day, the early years.
I remember looking at issue #2 in late 1989 (I think) it was incredible.
Gamefan was great for pics back in the early 90's, but was best with ECM at the helm in the late 90's.
Sad day when Gamefan died back in late 2000/early 01 around the time Sega killed the DC announcing support for the PS2.
The DC mag (OCDM) was great too, couldn't wait for those demos each month.
VG&CE was cool too nearly 20 years ago.

The Clinton years must have had the money flowing really well for that to exist.

the 90's ones were the best. i love going back and reading mags from the dawn of the Playstation and Saturn and N64 when there was still so much uncertainty with
3D games. the articles were all like "sony is getting into nintendo and sega territory, do they have what it takes to make in the videogame industry?"
or my favorite, when they were previewing FF7 like "this is the make it or break it game for square, will FF7 live up to the hype?" haha if they only knew!!
MatticusFinch1820 2 years ago 4

Well, as a kid I loved a magazine we had here in Sweden called "Nintendo Magasinet" that existed from about 90-96.
Not only did it have tips&tricks, articles, reviews but also comics.(Captain N,Super Mario Bros)
And it´s the same with those mags, they´re not worth anything except for nostalgic memories.
And each month a reader received an award called "Power Player" ,and won a Power Glove.
