I see one problem here: real knife attacks will never come nice and slow and definitely not with an outstretched arm which -in addition- the attacker will stop and hold in mid air, waiting for your counter attack. knife attacks come repeatedly, the DO come fast as hell and from every possible angle and direction. every untrained guy will make sure to cut you wherever and as many times as he can!
your method should: 1)be natural 2)be simple adrenaline, stress, and uncertainty of a REAL situation would make super fancy stuff useless. I used to train gun and knife disarms with my sparring partner(6'1/250lbs). Trust me, you only remember the SIMPLE stuff. We set rules that made it as REAL simulated as possible. 1)fraction of sec to react 2)surprise attack 3)hyped/amped up frightening looking attacker. My body only remember ONE technique. Why? bc it was practical+effective+SIMPLE.
If you want to see just how quick a knife can be then try a simple marker pen exercise. Defender wearing an old long sleeved shirt, attacker really trying to stab & slash. Result? Ink marks everywhere, especially to those blocking hands and arms. Add head target, neck, changing hands, concealed knife and an aggressive attacker that grabs, kicks & punches and you get an idea of how hard it is to defend against. Real knife = stakes are raised x 10,000 + fear to deal with as well.
hahaha thats so funny =) its like you didnt listen to anything he says in the beginning of the video. its not only your mind that is closed, its your ears too.
@MasterNinja1990 - Your response came through on my email so I'll assume it's aimed at me. 1. I saw & heard EVERYTHING. 2. His 'nidan black belt' assistant made the cardinal error of not listening to the expert and stepped. No knife person trained or untrained will give you that advantage. It's blade first body second. 3. Read my comments closer as I actually offer an exercise that supports what was said on the video, namely knives are dangerous. And they are dangerous even in untrained hands.
@cybergus18 - Nice idea. I presume you mean a bread & butter knife (no sharp edge or point). Your idea allows 'knife strikes' to the face safely as well. I'm actually up for any idea that drives home the point that knives are very serious weapons. I realize that unfortunately there may be times when there is no choice other than to defend against a blade. I just ask for knife defence instructors to please 'keep it real'.
You will most likely get cut no matter what technique you use. The best thing to do is avoid or I agree with the 500 yard sprint. There is nothing wrong with having a plan for when you can't get away.
@MrRonniePudding . Amateurs who don't practice yeah will get killed...that's a given but the move itself and the quick reflex with awareness that you receive from martial arts won't get killed.
Don't do this without an instructed attacker, or you will most likely get killed!!!
I've trained Escrima, and I would RUN if I was up against an knife armed person.. You can't win the fight without getting cut open, SO RUN!!! Only if you are cornered should you take up the fight! Remeber to turn you arms the right way, or your arteries may get sliced :P
the initial "block" is a nightmare..... huge gap between the blocking arms and a clear path through them to ur body.... ridiculous block....not secure at all!! just to let u know, karate developed this amazingly(apparently secret technique- SHUTO UKE) HAHAHAHAHA or KNIFE-HAND BLOCK..... I wonder why that was devised, and named KNIFE HAND BLOCK...i wonder ... lol rubbish
other problem, even if he did get the knife arm trapped the attacker could start punching him in the back of th head with the free arm. And twisting his arm like that against a fully resisting opponent could be difficult unless you are MUCH stronger
Heres the problem here: If he pulled back real fast with that knife it would go thru one of his wrists. Also, if he commits to turning into him like that and it doesnt work then hes exposing his side or back to the knife weilder.

No one in Afghanistan are defending your liberties. Worst case, they are raping and murdering Afghanis. Best case they are defender THEIR liberties. Why bring lame politics and lies in a otherwise amusing and fine video. ★★★☆☆
Sensei... you are a bad dude. Thanks for your videos. I love seeing/learning practical applications of our art. Kihon is critical for our foundation, but the bad guy on the street isn't going to attack with an oizuki. Keep up the great work! Real nasty bunkai!

The problem is....the defender knows what attack is coming.
In any stressful and fearful situation your reflexes will overide any learnt skill.
You simply won't have time for the brain to recognise a specific type of knife attack coming, overcome the intense fear reaction and then think about and decide on the appropiate defence before you are......well........stabbed.
Try it in your own dojos......
I have in mine......with my own students....it is one hell of a wake up call.
i like it but why are all ur knife defense techniques on the inside? in my school we practice to always stay on the outside whether with a knife or even a gun. heck even in just regular foward punches
Sometimes that's not always possible.i'm 5'9 225lbs muscular built and yet i can't wrest away a gun or knife from my brother who's slightly less built than me and way smaller and lighter. The guy has excellent gun retention skills. Also he's a good knife fighter as well.Yet never taken karate or judo or any othr M.A.for that matter.Against a person like that you hve to hit them hard fast,go4KO.Offcourse since he's my brother i used the wet-willy,?,Wet your finger & stick it in his ear...
man we're exactly the same build.lol. but you can implement striking techniques into these parrying movements. no offense but if you can't disarm a person with no martial arts experience, you need to work on that. i've trained shotokan most of my life, and muay thai for 15 yrs. believe me against an armed opponent muay thai is the last thing i would turn to. you can use whatever you think is necessary to disarm someone, but don't forget the basics. wet-willy.lol. i prefer the wedgie.lol
Mind you that there's further aspects to this technique that R not been shown or explain there's the aspect of conditioning & physical development. To really understand this types of techniques one would either need to train with someone who's gone thru an Operative-karate course/program or go thru the program yourself, kinda hard since that type of stuff was only taught to military/special personel & usually in former Soviet-block countries like Russia,Cuba,North Korea.Japan at one time also did

It's true that the best defence to a knife attack is escape (running away) but this technique is not too bad.

Nice try but you turn too much and give your back to the attacker, he can easily grab your neck with his left arm.

Some people do have the clear mind so they can do it.
Not many people though.

@renzevios
I am sorry but, I don't understand what you mean...
Are you saying you have to rise above the fear and have that elusive clear mind to be able to make these moves work ??
If that is the case then for 99.99% of people these moves are worthless....and will never work....
becs5120 1 year ago
@becs5120
Don't be a child. I think you know exactly what I mean with that.
Instead of fear you can have anger. People can control their fear.
It's just a fact and nothing you can diss me with.
So leave your pride of your reaction and accept that I didn't react so bad after all.

@becs5120 well isnt the point of training over and over again making this movement your reflex response?
i bet a boxer and a random guy would react differently to a guy suddenly threathening and throwing a punch.
