most ppl grow up in bj, like me, had profound feelings on heritage buildings and hutongs, they r heart and soul of this great city, now more and more of these things r being torn down in bj, we feel sad and helpless, because we couldnt do anything about it. and the new generation of kids havnt even seen the real bj.
It's all corporate greed. Corrupt contractors and local officials. People need to preserve these things, but once you get the corrupt developers linked with the corrupt local officials, history gets destroyed.
I hope that there are other old buildings being preserved. I would hate to think that global corporate interests are behind the knocking of some historic places just so new stores can be built in that spot.
At least its not stealing the name. Was more of an attack at the fake name brand industry than on the man. I purchased a few "fake items" before. Pirating clothing, cd's, and software, is a huge industry in Asia, Middle East, and Eastern Europe, and South America.
This episode brought to my mind the book "The Source". Although it was written about Palestine, it was interesting to take a historical romp through the building and destroying of periods of civilization over many generations. Reminds me of what is happening in China these days.
That said, so much aesthetic character has been discarded as modern humans rush to build ever more quickly. And sadly, many contemporary buildings won't last long into the future. Not like our forefathers' structures.
This is sad. My Chinese teacher was telling us a few weeks ago how Beijing used to have sort of a labyrinth of alleyways between the housing structures and that it was famous for it. She also said that most of those unique things are gone now.
silly chinks, all they care now just the figure on their GDP growth report. they can't get respect from the world without enough self-respect. there will be a day chinese look back in anger wanna cry but in no tear after all the identity lost in the flood of macdonald, coca cola, macintosh, mickey mouse in the arm of uncle sam...then you will be feeling really damn cool
to sinopie: i open my mouth with an opinion, if you think you know better than me, prove it here. your comments like that completely dumbass and boring
Yeah, unfortunately this seems to be the sad state of affairs in China these days. If the Three Gorges flooding wasn't enough, acts like this certainly lowers my patriotism.
refering to other comments, please, don't put the responsibility on foreigners for what China is doing to herself, in the name of its 5 thousand year civilization.
Above all, thanks for reporting on this, which could have gone on, in the dark, without the world knowing it, or without giving future generations of Chinese citizens a bit of the knowledge and responsibility for proceeding this way for the sake of 'development' (we should say individual enrichment in most cases). And we are not even talking about the disrupted lives of those whose fate is closely linked to and incarnated into locations such as this temple, neighbourhood, and city...
I think that they probably would've done this 50 years ago if they'd had the money back then. Socialism and indeed social democracy doesn't or at least didn't lay much on historical/cultural value. Sweden also wrecked whole city-parts of elderly houses to make way for modern block of flats with plumbing and central heating. A big loss indeed, even if they weren't 600 years old. Might've been worth it though. Not saying that's the same thing as this though, of course.
It is sad how a government can be so intrusive to common people and yet bend over backwards for corporations, all while bulldozing irreplaceable historical monuments.
This is what I hate about fucking developing country, how easily they disregard their heritage. They don't understand that what attracts most people is the ancient history, not the bloody cement building you see everywhere.
China is not a developing country. It's an old country with an ancient history that once was way more advanced than the Western world.
It was a sophisticatedly developed country before the European invasions and ruined us with their greed and arrogance. Just like what they did to India. They distorted our ancient values.
If it wasn't because of all the foreign invasions, China wouldn't have become communist, that during the Cultural Revolution that destroyed even more for "modernity".
We are not destroying our buildings for you foreigners.
I'm sorry. Don't be so egotistic. The world does not revolve around you.
We are doing this to progress ourself as a country. Slowly getting rid of the ghettos and building decent buildings where future Chinese people can live.
Important-historical buildings with great symbolic representation will still be kept.
Keep in mind that China has a long history. We cannot keep everything and maintain it. Some things must be sacrificed.
1,i'am not a "foreigner". but a chinese historian;
2,this film was not made to show that the chinese are destroying their buildings for foreigners, no body said that. your words is not logical at all. chinese are destroying their historical buildings, not for anybody, but for some guys to get dirty money!
3,as a historian on chinese ancient architecture, i can tell you clearly that this building is excactly a so-called "Important-historical buildings with great symbolic representation"!
what a shame that they do that. The government have no concern about preserving our culture. But, oh well. Time is time, things doesn't stay forever. Think about it this way and we might feeling better about the unchangeable truth in this foreseeable future of China.
I understand the underlying message there is that the property developer did not comply with the local legislation on preservation of historical buildings and whoever is responsible should be de-licensed. but the way the story was presented made it sound like the modern Chinese urban planning do not appreciate the beauty of Chinese history, which is true and sad really.
I am not saying there is destruction (and development) for foreigners. I am saying don't BLAME foreigners if some things are destroyed for the sake of development in China.
Also, it might be a good idea to be careful when you say "you foreigners". Foreigners isn't one people, it is a lot a different people, just like the Chinese people. You are no different.
As a trained archaeologist, I also find this sad. I had plans to visit Beijing in the near future perhaps if I come whats left of it will still be there.
Yes, but foreigners have also destroyed many Chinese buildings!

This is so sad. Tearing up those old hutongs are like ripping out the heart out of Beijing. Tearing up the roots of an old tree.
So sad...
All real Beijingers feel a psychological connection with those hutongs.

The temple, to most, does not have great symbolic importance in our day and age.
Change is needed. If we kept everything the way it was, nothing would change.
