i truly admire your skills! a couple questions, do you often use exotic scales such as the egyptian to get your sound? and what tunings to you use for your guitars and what's the difference in the necks for your double neck guitars?
Karl, you are a great guitarist, I have been teaching myself more lead guitar for the past year or so (I am mainly a drummer and a rhythm guitarist) my issues are that I really want to get good at sweeps because I have so many ideas and different arpeggios that I want to use in my songs, but I cannot get the upward sweeps at all, downwards are getting way better, but my upward picking is awful, any tips?
@KoreshXIV Sure. You have to use your arm - to make your pick "fall" upwards - with the same kind of motion ( inverted) that the pick makes when it goes down. Try this -
take your pick and put it on the other side of the high E string. Now play that note - and as you finish the E note let the pick come to rest naturally on the "b" string - like a classical "rest" stroke- do that a few times - then try pulling it all the way through - with
In most Nile tracks you flirt with harmonic minor scale, diminished and you often break your scales chromaticly. Well know I'm sounding like I know what I'm talking about, don't let that fool you :) No , but I would like to hear your ideas on how to break scales "organicly", so one gets that feeling of natural progression. I often find that breaking the scale in which I play to sound clumsy and banal. Do you have any tips regarding a way to break scales? Like a rule of thumb?
KARL that (doomy bit) in the middle in Those Whom the Gods Detest titled track.. that is the most darkest thing i have ever heard in my life .... i feel an over whelming despair in that part.. you know the bit im talking about
@KarlofNile could there possible be touches of that darkness in the follow album? hopefully some footage of recording the album? either way me and my friends are highly looking forward to it :D you guys are great... with will be a good year for death metal!

Hey Karl, why are you using double neck guitar? I mean, no other guitar players play it... So Id like to ask what is good for or what special features you like about it. Thanks
Hello mr. Sanders,I am 14 years old,I play guitar for 2 years,and you are the guitarist that has earned the most of my respect.I just started practising sweep picking becouse i saw you use it a lot,also learned the scale called Phrygian Dominant.I was wondering if you can tell me any other scale you like to use in Nile songs,and if you can give me any advice on playing guitar and sweeping.
@pajathetrut I have been slaving away ridiculous hours every day for the last 5 years - getting my sweeps up to snuff - becasue of that goddamn stupid "Betcha Video". First time seeing this game: wtf? fat stupid fuck who fucks easiest shred standards(vide betcha cant paly this video) and now after something like 3 -4 years of constant listening to nile and watching him... HE IS FUCKING GOD
I remember buying this album right before my vacation to Amsterdam and listening to it every night of my stay while extremely high on high-quality weed and "truffels." When I listened to "Iskander Dhul Kharnon" for the first time, I remember actually picturing the end of the world before even reading the lyrics to the song. However, my proclivity to getting high has not diminished my love of this album. It still gives me goosebumps with every listen. I can't wait for the next.
These videos are really helpful. Thanx! You and Dallas should make DVDs, Intense death metal sequences! Also I would like to tell you something that caught my attention. Stupid people are spreading the rumor of your death on last.fm :s
@KarlofNile karl a question, how different is it to play a scalloped guitar rather than a standard fretboard? is it just a personal preference or is there an actual reason?
@843andrew Amazing , isn't it ? I initially figured since it was MY FACE right there in the video,
I probably wouldn't have to argue with any "You're not playing it like the Tab-I-Found-Online-so-therefore -you-are wrong-Bud" type obtuse whining . I guess I over/underestimated the obviousness of it all . :-) Oh well, live and learn .
Would you ever think about posting a video that details how you get your live/studio tones. They are in my opinion among the strongest in all the metal universe. I play bass and and am drawn to your tone. Live it kills.
@steviemorse hahahahahha Thats a good one. There are NO NILE songs in B . We play in Drop A . Any tab that says otherwise is incorrect. Duh . "Kafir" is in Drop A .
Some one earlier referred to "Iskander" ; which has a Tonal center of E Min , but its still played in Drop A . Do I really need to remind anyone that I ought to know what tuning the song is in, after all, I am the one who wrote it, and I am pretty sure I dont have Alzheimers . :-)
@KarlofNile Which now, in this era, people would refer to as " trolling ".
A quick check on his channel says otherwise, though. He spent most of his time posting nonsensical comments. So i guess he is not a troll, but rather one of the " cognitive suboptimized ". But i do not speak ill of the dead.
Hail Karl.I think there's something strange because i heard you were working at your album but i can't find any news for that on google.Also,i know you use Drop A but do you also use it on Iskander D'hul Karnon because i think that would be rather B Standard isn't it?
Anyway i fucking love your music,you can't even imagine how much i love it.
And thank you for answering to the fans directly like that
Oh excuse me it's just that i thought the song was possible to play in Standard B that you would have not use the A and Bb notes on that song but if it's not the case then the tab is wrong and i don't have to learn with that tab
@extrememetal100 Pretty sure that the low A and Bb notes are intrinsic to the song ;
and that if there is a disparity between what some one online tabbed out AND THE WAY I ORIGINALLY WROTE , then probabbly , yeah, the tab might just be "off"
and lastly ,, thankyou my friend for the opportunity for this delightful lighthearted opportunity for good-natured comedic exchange :-)
Hi Karl. I have a question because i'am a student of oriental archeology. My question: Is the egypt music you use in your music, "real" egypt from ancient times? or are this melodys just "we believe it is like that" ? i've seen a lot of our imagination of how something has to be, comes from hollywood and myths. I'am not much into egyptology, are there any written down "symbphonys" or ancient music on papyrus?
@KarlofNile Hey Karl! When the new album is released sometime in the future, can Nile please tour Australia? I'll be turning 18 next year and it will be the ultimate birthday present, a ticket to see NILE! \m/ \m/
I have no idea what you did in the video,Im a drummer :P does George Kollias understand this?, he also plays some guitar and If one of my greatest drum idols and infuences does, then i should learn atleast some basic guitar stuff i guess...
also I have one question that keeps bothering me..
The lyrics in this song.. what do they mean?
with all respect, I really like the song, its great, but the lyrics seem to distract me and make me want to stop listening the song...
Hey Karl, I am a huuuuuge fan of your work with Nile. But the beauty of your ambient solo work also really piques my interest from another direction. Do you have any plans to do another album after Saurian Exorcisms?
@SortiariusOfficial You betcha. But at the moment I am 100 % involved with the new Nile record ; so the Ambient project will have to wait a little while. :-)
Wow that's really cool, Karl actually responds to comments. I like that, I wish some other bands did that, actually get an inside look on how the music is made.
@KarlofNile Hey Karl! When the new album is released sometime in the near future, can Nile please tour Australia? I'll be 18 next year so that will be the ultimate birthday present, a ticket to NILE! \m/ \m/
Karl, I've been wondering what it would be like if you (the band) recorded some older songs and put them on the new album like bonus tracks or something. You you know like, for instance, Suffocation does on almost all of their albums. I think it would be quite interesting to hear some older songs from albums like Black seeds of vengeance recorded with today's recording technology.
KARL!! I have a question for you -- How do you get that menacing "Egyptian" sound that's so prevalent in all of your band's music? I've been playing around with diminished scales and that sounds cool, but is there anything else that you do?
Holy shit is this really Karl?! =]]]]] Karl I saw you guys play at the Hollywood Key Club last November and damn was I blown away! +] You guys are great and have impact my life in a beautiful fucking way =] Nile! all the way man!
I'm new fan of Nile. I have started listening all the albums and there is something in your music/style that is very addicting. I really like your style- I wish I could play those wicked arpeggios ;)
Anyway keep doing what you doing and I hope I will see you guys in Ireland soon!
P.S. I read a bit of David Icke stuff, someone mentioned about you on his forum. Very, very cool :)
@JimJimJimNL Sure. Its a lot of fun , and sometimes leads to new ideas .But I dont improvise onstage -
as much fun as it MIGHT be, its not really fair to the fans who come to hear / see the songs and are expecting to hear whats on the record. For Live I stick to the recorded versions as much as possible.
@JimJimJimNL Yeah, :-) but how Musical it may or may out is another matter entirely .There is also the "Arpeggio Police " to be on the look-out for as well . Another good reason to NOT improvise onstage .
Yeah a solo only of arpeggios are going to get boring after a while, but i myself like improvises on stage! But its more of a blues thing i guess, tough Mille from Kreator does it haha.
Well thanks for your answers, see you on tour the next time your in the Netherlands!
that's a unique guitar, double neck with scalloped frets :O but both necks have 6 strings, what's the difference? I can't see the pick-ups, are there different pickups? is that the difference?
Hey Karl, big fan of Nile an your solo stuff. Just wanted to ask, living in present day 2011, with the growing threat of extremism, and more specifically terrorism, do you think people who aren't acquainted with the Egyptian side of your themes might get the impression you make music that is somehow related to that culture?
@eternalabhorrence6 Do I LOOK like a Terrorist to you ? :-) All joking aside , I dont worry about stuff like that.
I make Music , write songs , and play guitar . And try to make sure the rent is paid. I got enough problems just trying to keep gas in my Truck , to even care about the vast multitudes of the Unaquainted and Clueless .
@KarlofNile gas is expensive, lol...and i was just wondering because people are too quick to judge and what not, and especially with a subject like that
@KarlofNile I look like a typical Arab with a beard, which today has been associated with Terrorism. It sucks to get teased about it all the time, but it gets funny at one point. Especially when you start joking about yourself.
By the way, I will sound like a total fanboy now, but, Mr Karl Sanders, sir. I am a huge fan of you. I can't wait to see you in montreal the next time you show up here.
would u guys happen to be in the studio working on a new album?

@KarlofNile so Melodic and Symphonic I'm guessing.
Check out Windir, Mistur, Sirius, Stormlord, and I think you'd really like Odious(They're middle-eastern influenced)

KarlofNile 3 months ago
Hail Karl.I think there's something strange because i heard you were working at your album but i can't find any news for that on google.Also,i know you use Drop A but do you also use it on Iskander D'hul Karnon because i think that would be rather B Standard isn't it?
Anyway i fucking love your music,you can't even imagine how much i love it.
And thank you for answering to the fans directly like that
extrememetal100 3 months ago
@extrememetal100 Iskander is indeed in Drop A tuning. :-)
KarlofNile 3 months ago
@KarlofNile
Strange...I have a tab of this song and it says it's in B and the tab is pretty good i think
extrememetal100 3 months ago
@extrememetal100 Of course I am playing this Nile song completely wrong.I have no idea how the song actually is played.
KarlofNile 3 months ago 60
@KarlofNile
Oh excuse me it's just that i thought the song was possible to play in Standard B that you would have not use the A and Bb notes on that song but if it's not the case then the tab is wrong and i don't have to learn with that tab
extrememetal100 3 months ago
@extrememetal100 Pretty sure that the low A and Bb notes are intrinsic to the song ;
and that if there is a disparity between what some one online tabbed out AND THE WAY I ORIGINALLY WROTE , then probabbly , yeah, the tab might just be "off"
and lastly ,, thankyou my friend for the opportunity for this delightful lighthearted opportunity for good-natured comedic exchange :-)

Thanks man!
ShittakeBukakke 4 months ago
@ShittakeBukakke There is more to life than Diminished scales , my friend. :-)

Thanks for the incredible music, Karl.

Hey Karl,
I'm new fan of Nile.

Hey karl do you ever improvise solos?
JimJimJimNL 4 months ago
@JimJimJimNL Sure. Its a lot of fun , and sometimes leads to new ideas .But I dont improvise onstage -
as much fun as it MIGHT be, its not really fair to the fans who come to hear / see the songs and are expecting to hear whats on the record. For Live I stick to the recorded versions as much as possible.
KarlofNile 4 months ago 8
@KarlofNile
If you improvise do you also play with such an high level of technicality?
JimJimJimNL 4 months ago
@JimJimJimNL Yeah, :-) but how Musical it may or may out is another matter entirely .There is also the "Arpeggio Police " to be on the look-out for as well . Another good reason to NOT improvise onstage .
KarlofNile 4 months ago
@KarlofNile
Yeah a solo only of arpeggios are going to get boring after a while, but i myself like improvises on stage! But its more of a blues thing i guess, tough Mille from Kreator does it haha.
Well thanks for your answers, see you on tour the next time your in the Netherlands!

Hey Karl, big fan of Nile an your solo stuff. Just wanted to ask, living in present day 2011, with the growing threat of extremism, and more specifically terrorism, do you think people who aren't acquainted with the Egyptian side of your themes might get the impression you make music that is somehow related to that culture?
eternalabhorrence6 5 months ago
@eternalabhorrence6 Do I LOOK like a Terrorist to you ? :-) All joking aside , I dont worry about stuff like that.
I make Music , write songs , and play guitar . And try to make sure the rent is paid. I got enough problems just trying to keep gas in my Truck , to even care about the vast multitudes of the Unaquainted and Clueless .

@KarlofNile gas is expensive, lol...and i was just wondering because people are too quick to judge and what not, and especially with a subject like that
eternalabhorrence6 5 months ago
@KarlofNile I look like a typical Arab with a beard, which today has been associated with Terrorism. It sucks to get teased about it all the time, but it gets funny at one point. Especially when you start joking about yourself.
By the way, I will sound like a total fanboy now, but, Mr Karl Sanders, sir. I am a huge fan of you. I can't wait to see you in montreal the next time you show up here.
