Four years ago a man came into our business and asked me if he could dispose of rubber mulch. It was outside his house and would heat during the day and give off noxious chemicals. He was getting rid of it because his wife and daughter developed immune system deficiencies which Yale New Haven deemed would last for life. You people can say what you want about it, it simply is not healthy. The risk outweighs the benefit.
Lady. You have NO idea. The issue about zinc is absolute rubbish. if zinc was a problem, we'd all be dead as rubber dust from tires from driving would be making its way into water supplies and killing us.
wow lady u really have no clue, for one thing sand is a litter box for every animal around there, also dig to the bottom of that sand and u will get all kinds of molds and very bad germs.it sounds to me you need to do more research becouse resilant surfacing and shreaded tires our the safest way to go,also the tires go through intense cleaning processes, also GO GREEN,
obama call me i will put resiliant surfacing around your hole white house, non slippery, pourist,

@rwwill05 If you notice, the material you put in a kitty box is totally different from the sand in a playground. And, yes you are right, that if you dig to the bottom, you get all kinds of molds and germs in the kitty box but that is ONLY if you are not a clean person and you don't change the kitty litter daily. If you do your research, there is some concern about the rubberized material in playgrounds. Who uses the playgounds? Children who become sick.
Contaminating groundwater? A 25x50' area? They use the microground rubber in the asphalt roads & highways, miles & miles of it too!!!! Secondarily, it's not as popular product as wood mulch anywhooo. All the research & development gone into finding a good use for it & she's gonna call foul? I'm sure she'll complain that her next set of BRIDGESTONE tires cost too much too. Ya can't have it both ways folks.....
It's interesting that Nancy is leaning on RUBBER TIRES for support during most of this screed. Also, the hard-packed sand on which she's standing can be LETHAL for a child who falls from the height of an ordinary playground slide. Her science is junk, her "facts' are junk, her "institute" is a fraud, and this video is a disgrace.
Good grief, where does she get this info? What about the mult-millions of tires that wear out each year? When your brand new tires go bald after 40,000 miles or so, where do you think all the rubber went? It slowly turned into rubber dust particles that went..... into the ENVIRONMENT! That means ground water, gardens, fields, and YOUR LUNGS! If this lady were right, life on earth would have ceased to exist long ago. It would be great if she could actually quote and reveal her sources.
Please reveal your testing data, everything I find from the EPA states that rubber is completely safe. Stunt plant growth? Quite funny I use this at my home and my plants are larger and healthier than before.
This is obviously all about dollars and cents. Shes no scientist, she is just getting paid to destroy the best thing that ever happened to Playground Safety.
Plastic bottles, plates, cups, and so many more products are manufactured from dangerous ingredients however they don't pose a health problem once they are manufactured. So to Rubber Mulch is perfectly safe to play on. As a matter of fact its the safest Playground Surfacing available on the planet. You can drop a egg on it and it won't break. When I take my kids to a playground soft surfacing is my number 1 concern.
I mean if you bury your child in these rubber materials then maybe she has an argument. But I mean you wouldn't bury your children in sand as well. So her point is rather extreme. I think the benefits of rubber recycling for all of its various products far outway the hazards she points out.
I am a parent who is grateful to Nancy Alderman and EHHI for speaking up about the health concerns independent scientists are uncovering about old tires shredded and spread where kids play.
It is significant to me that EHHI (the non-profit group of which Nancy is president) is not funded by ANY industry and that CT STATE scientists identified toxics in rubber mulch and crumb rubber they tested in 2007.
That's why CT's AG funded further study that is going on right now.
What a dope! She has no idea... I love the rubber mulch and she has no idea that rubber mulch hurts humans. She probably owns a wood mulch company. My plants have grown faster than normal with the rubber and I love it...
Zinc is used as a fertilizer and plants can exhibit zinc deficiency. In addition, the ASM publication Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist cites Zinc oxide as an important soil nutrient. Although a radical overexposure of Zinc could cause toxicity, the amounts leached by rubber mulch do not approach even the levels used as fertilizer.
This video is pure nonsense. Either Nancy has failed to check any facts or simply doesn't care about facts. Maybe she is being paid by the sand or wood mulch industry. Sand playgrounds are nearly as safe for children falling from a distance. Tire chips do not leach...studied extensively. Tires are not hazardous or special waste. Ground up tires do not emit any toxins that she suggests. I think she holds herself up to potential lawsuits for slander and liable. Wacky!!!!!
So if rubber is so dangerous as mulch, why are they approved for use on millions of cars and getting used up on our roads every day? That's lot scarier than the infinitely small amount which is used as mulch!
@db54 The difference is children do not play on the roads. As to the tires hanging on the playground equipment that DC00039 is referring to, if the rubber is whole (meaning not torn up or broken up) when the sun heats it up, it doesn't have the same effect as those broken down into little pieces.
i have rubber mulch in my gardens and under swings for over 3 years. I love the product, my plants thrive. Sand is a magnet for cats. I researched before using and found the EPA and CSPC validate the mulch has less toxins than drinking water. please visit this woman's website; you will then understand that she has a lot of agendas which are somewhat misguided. what would she rather see the "millions" of tires be used for? Viewers should research the actual product and be warned of fanatics.
As a landscape designer, this is valuable information to be able to dissuade people from using rubber tire mulch. Thank you for putting this information out there.
Thank you for getting the word out about this danger. So many of us have not been aware of this, and hopefully more and more communities and people will choose other alternatives to rubber mulch.

What about the tires hanging on the playground equipment? And sand contains silica dust...Read the warnings on a bag of playsand.
