Marvin was marvelous. I was about 12 years old (living in L.A.) when me and family got the sad news of his passing. Like everyone in the country (perhaps the world) I thought it was part of the traditional April 1st jokes but, unfortunately to say, it wasn't. Marvin Gaye was murdered by his dad in L.A. Marvin will never be forgotten. In spirit and in his music he still lives.
I actually watched this show when I was younger. this was 1 of the 2 times I got to see Marvin Gaye alive (the other singing the National Anthem, I believe at the all-star game). When I found out he was killed on "April Fools Day", I was like alot of other people, I couldn't believe it. R.I.P Mr. Gaye
Is there any other man who has the soul, spirit, depth, wisdom as this man? I am so thankful for having known his music live in the day. Only wish I could go back to then. He and his music will indeed become legend. Just wait an see what's goin on...long after my generation has passed.
Right after I got my driver license, I used to skip Catholic Mass, (lying to my parents), and drive through the country outside of Washington D.C. listening to Motown tunes on the radio. Time well spent. Saved my soul with Soul Music.
Depth of feeling leads to an honesty and sincerity that is unsurpassed when expressed. Feelings so sincere they reach out and touch you. That's whatak
Despite the horrible circumstances, which lead to Marvin's departure, this video proves that he could correctly pace his body on stage. The video also makes you wish Marvin was still here to teach these men who call themselves artists.
This one of the greatest musician I have ever heard, listening to his music simply brings peace to my soul. I´m not even from his country or culture nor time, because I was born at a different time and different country but does not mean I can not appreciate good music.
@jody808 This wasn't his LAST performance. He still looks as good as he l aways did. I saw him perform live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia during the Midnight Love tour. He brought the house down...
@PhillyPolNoir -You were lucky to have seen him. It took many years for me to realize his unique talent. His songs today are classics and I never grow tire of hearing them.

Marvin was the greatest! This song was so unexpected as I watched this show back in 1983.. I was floored at it's sincerity; it message and it's tone. So beautifully performed by the greatest 3 octave singer Motown ever produced... only to have it get even better as he segwayed into "What's Going On"... oh Lord, does it get any better than this???? I think not. Miss ya Marv
this is just awesome to say the least. i hope the generations to come can respect the music of yesteryear because this is what helped make us the people we are today...
Thank you for posting this...let's remember the best of him, and all of those like Otis, Al Green, Luther, Stevie and Teddy...God blessed us with so many greats, Barry and so many more. Thank you for the music and the message.
My Brother Marvin, I know you were a troubled, divided soul--I know your drug use hurt you so badly--in so many ways, & I also understand your darkness, your hidden self, your soul, so deeply divided----yes, I know all that--but to hear you raise that beautiful voice, singing as only you could, " What's Goin 'On " -----God Bless You Forever, & Thank-you from My Heart, for all the music you gave us. Only a truly beautiful soul could have given us this Performance. RIP, Forever. Wolfsky9
@knoxunflower1 Yeah, Marvin's #1 for me and the 2-5 spots are up for grabs betwenn Green, Wonder, Otis, Luther...no not Sam Cooke, although he was great...I don't know...he just doesn't do it for me like the others.
the man! a visionary and the most forward thinking and caring man that was in the public eye, he saw our problems before any of us> RIP marvin, love ya
@RyanSkillz79 And to think, he had to fight Berry Gordy, and Motown to release this song. This is the most significant song of all time. BG almost deprived the world of a historical song. You are right....Marvin was definitely ahead of his time with this song, and Mercy, Mercy Me. By the way, did you ever read "Divided Soul"?....Haunting, but very insightful into the man.
O he had so much talent...but he looked so old and on drugs!!! Can you believe he was gone like 7 days later! He was living his last week. So scary we dont know our own faith.. I miss you marvin you will be missed. RIP
@jeandoit This is the first video i saw of Marvin when they showed the 25th anniversary of Motwn in 1983...And i fell under his spell at once!!As well as with Michael and Stevie...Just great performers and great moments!!Thank you for your comment...
