Pure pleasure. Love the rhythm and the way you keep the time and form in your head through it all and keep us on track. I just have to learn your version!
Great job! This is very much like Bobby Gentry's version without the strings. But you really caputured the remarkable beauty and distinctive groove of this song.
GUITAR FACES - Gotta do it if it's goin' to sound right. When I was an apprentice at age 13 and was struggling to break a nut loose the craftsman told me: "you're not holding your mouth right".
is this a hard one to learn i really like the sound of it great feel ive been playing guitar my whole life my family has strong roots in bluegrass so i want to get more into the fingerpicking style and would love to add this great piece you did it sounds great man!!!
What I would give to have that left hand! Your touch is perfectly nuanced. Another brilliant performance. Thanks for sharing with us Martin is very generous of you.
The original has a way of grabbing you and pulling you into the song. You really have been able to recreate that feeling for me with this Martin. Fantastic, expressive playing!
Word. Martin is a true gentelman. Click on his post up there. You'll be awestruck by what he offers. Most of theses videos are tabbed absolutely free! No teasers,No B.S.,No strings attached. (guitar pun not intended.)
Your guitar styling reminds me of the vocal styling that made this song a hit years ago. In fact you've captured so much soul with your playing I can almost hear the lyrics being sung! Totally expressive.
Much as I admire Chet's electric version here on youtube I prefer the directness and funkier groove of your more sparse acoustic version. Chet's version was very much of its time.
Thanks! I heard the song again by chance and pretty quickly found this way of playing it, it´s in the original key. I could have done more with it, like you say - for example to raise the melody line an octave the 3rd verse or so. However, I mostly wanted to get it out of my system while I was "in the groove" :)
great arrangement...I remember looking at the sheet music for this..over 20 years ago. It suggested a much busier arrangement. Which didn't work all that well. I tried it at the time. At that time I got a texas instrumetns 99/4a to play this song...a feet back then. But yes the arrangement I was working with was way too busy. This is much better.
I like and agree with the "God Of Groove" comment. There's one for the CD sleeve notes! Wish I had thought of it myself. Very unusual tune to do as an acoustic instrumental but it works because of the great and funky "groove". I think it would also have worked well with a banjo style open string guitar section in it, including up the neck for variety. A key change would add to it also.
I have listened to it again. Some open string work might fit well as it did in Man of Constant Sorrow. The flow of open string playing is a lovely contrast to a funky groove. Am not now that sure about the key change - just an idea that occured to me. I love the drive in this - it is exceptional.
Now please dont take this the wrong way but your birth must have been a hard on your mom because I know with the passion you have and show when playing you must have been born with a guitar in your hands
You are a true talented man with a guitar my friend
Great style and feel. Well done man!

Thanks, well I wanted to keep it simple like the original vocals, although Bobbie of course had the great lyric story for diversity...
