  • best thing ever

  • This crowd sucks! Wake up! it's the fucking Smiths!

  • Talk about miming and I don't even care haha Wheres the microphone? Good song though!

  • Exquisite

  • That audience is shit! They're hardly moving! Don't they realise that it's the fucking Smiths?

  • 'sir leads the troops, jealous of youth, same old suit since ninety-sixty-two, he did the military two step doooown the nape of my neck' - Ah, they never wrote 'em like that.

  • I find his swaying so hypnotic! i love how the front row join in on the arm swaying, while morrissey gives a pure look of satisfaction. Love him!

  • very beautiful

    i am japanese

  • "Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools

    Spineless swines, cemented minds"

Ah, they don't write 'em like that anymore.

  • john marr piece of art, enought said

  • Dorkhunter u pan head.

  • Bloody great song... grandiose in every way...

  • is this where carlton from the fresh prince got his dance from? great stuff!!!

  • the smiths rock!!! morrissey is a legend

  • dorkhunter why are trying too assinate everyone from your keyboard you need too go out n get laid dork

  • Dorkhunter - more like Porktaker - You Test

  • I was at Manchester Schools when this came out, I remember the song and absolutely love it. it means so much to me...

  • Dorkhunter1 stop being such a retard, dont tell him to come back when he knows what hes talking about, you are the one who clearly doesnt know,

none "performed" live at that show, it was lip sync, The Smiths made fun of it by using no mic.

  • the show didn't let bands play live, it was always lip-syncing. morrissey refused to pretend, so he just didn't take a mic.

  • greatness never dies!!!!

  • dorkhunter are you stupid? The show did that with every single band that played! The Smiths were making fun of that by using no mike.

  • Every time I hear a Smiths cover, it proves to me what an incredible singer this guy is. He does it so easy, with so much feeling.

  • seeing the Moz in May! yaaaaaaaay!! x x x

  • Me too! except in March. I don't think I'll be able to wait that long though.. haha.

  • My favourite song from my favourite Smiths album - and what a performance!

  • fuck yeah!!

  • Morrissey es lo maximo. lima- Peru

  • Marr is on top of his game here

  • Superb!

  • i couldn't give a rats ass about sexuality, its all about the music mr

  • he's asexual!

  • What is asexual? To love yourself? I couldn't blame him. LOL.

  • asexual is to have no sexual drive

  • How can someone live like that? In the "There is a light that Never Goes Out" video, he totally kisses a guy. I heard, he had a reletionship with Marr at a point, there's like letters between them, I heard.

  • you heard this, you heard that. how about not listening to stupid rumours

  • are you sure that its Morrissey that kisses that other guy, because i watched it and i dont know if it is him or not? not that im bothered about anyones sexuality!

  • It's totally him, just look.

  • Ummm where exactly did you hear that?

  • That's the reason Morrissey won't reunite with the Smiths. Because of Johnny Marr.

  • that is his downfall artisticly spoken.

within the smiths morrissey was way better. WAY better.

  • Johnny Marr is a gifted musician. Morrissey is a gifted pop star.

  • morrisey..a pop star...? mmmm think hed be first one to admit he would never find himself comfortable playin the pop star..morrisey is more a poet with a great voice and dry sense of humour!! george michael is a pop star

  • Morrissey states that he wont reunite with The Smiths becuase he has continued to work hard to maintain his career after the split, where all the others have not so he'd be carrying them. I think he was really hurt by the split cos he definatley didn't want it and that is the real reason. Marr has been in other bands ever since and I believe that Rourke and Joyce are in a band called 'The other Smiths' and cover all the tracks done with 'The Smiths'. So his reasoning hardly stands up to scrutiny

  • he's not asexual you idiots

  • Or maybe it's being in love with yourself

  • there will not be a band in the next 1000 years thats better than The Smiths, i just cant see it happening.

  • anyone know how the bass player gets that tone?

  • P-Bass with the bass amp mids turned way down and the bass and treble maxed, with maybe just a hint of a chorus.

  • yay johnny marr! Smiths are totally underrated

  • phuk jonas sisters the smihts are the smiths

  • timmythepierate: you did not just fucking compare the jonas brothers to the smiths. WOW music is obviously not your forte

  • no i didnt actually. i was in convo with someone who deleted there comments. rest assured i did not randomly bring up the joebros. i just said they write their own music unlike most pop acts now days.

  • The crowd was horrible! Don't u know u were at an historic event? Of course, u didn't...

  • Well to be fair, it was a mimed performance. Pretty hard to get worked up to someone lipsynching.

    Not really an 'historic event'.

  • Actually when this was broadcast it was quite historic, lipsynched or not, I remember it like it was yesterday, though the crowd were not to know that, this is the coolest smiths appearance they did for tv IMO. You will not see a more cooler guitarist than the great JM here

  • the point is... that noone before morrissey apparently questioned the deceit thats implied in their little lipsync scam... its morrissey refusing to play along by not holding a microphone... apparently this also caused enough commotion to make them famous in Britain... thats the historical value of the moment...

  • I was having a drink with Andy Rourke when he was DJ'ing at a club in Manchester..Anyway when he was about to go back up to the dj booth I asked him to play the "Headmaster Ritual" as it's a favourite of mine..It turns out that it's one of his fav' Smiths songs too! He played it for me of coarse..I asked him, he couldn't say no, how could he?(Arf!) Very nice chap, enjoyed his company..Long live Tib Street Films..Hi to Mark & Mandy in Berlin! Peace & love to all! Long live the Smiths!

  • I don't believe you!

  • the best

  • just a show,just have a look

  • Is he miming? Where's the mic?

  • they do that because it sounds better than actually playing it live a think, alot of bands do it

  • There is one artist that has vowed to never lip sync, and it's Ashlee Simpson. But she has been known to do what is called as a "hoe-down."

  • ah yes...i heard it adds to her immense musical talent apparently, she clearly will one day achieve the musical ledgend status of her sister

  • That's nonsense - the Smiths always played live whenever possible. There were a few shows on TV that insisted that songs were mimed, e.g. TOTP. They were a good live band.

  • He is lip synching but it's Morrissey's way of sticking it to the industry. He refuses to have a mic because he knows that it's fake and he wants to expose it as what it is. That's why Top of the Pops gave him hell when he refused to go on stage with a mic.

  • "Bruises bigger than dinnerplates"

  • johnny marr got the sound right this time.vocals go hand in hand much like a hand in glove.

  • THE SMITHS FOREVER!!!

  • Excelente cancion, viva los Smiths

  • I love the smiths; saw them in '86 and it was the best concert of my life. But I must say Morrissey looks like Kramer from Seinfeld here.

  • ok, I will say it again, if Morrissey has no microphone, Marr ant the other guys should be air playing too!.......... that would be something!, .jajaja!

  • I wish I was in a Smiths-type band just so I could dance like Morrissey. The Smiths absolutely rule

  • Where is his mic?

I think he might be lipsyncing this..

  • Yeah, theres a slight chance....

    Just a small one though.

  • nah he just has a really really really loud voice

  • This was so original! When I heard it first in '84 I was astonished, I didn't know any of The Smiths, and I'm a inconditinal fan since then, both of Marr's compositions and Morissey's lyrics. True poets.

  • between the tree and the bosom

  • The Smiths should reunite now and tour with Metallica!!!!!

  • haha FUCK OFF

  • Get fucked! metallica? JEsus CHrist, your dumb.

  • What is dumb about that? There is something called eclectic taste. Get out of your myopic indie hipster world of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Anyway, I also thought that the reunited Smiths should also play with My Bloody Valentine, Fela Kuti (RIP), Autechre, Gilberto Gil, King Crimson, and Steve Reich. That would be awesome!!!!

    Widen your horizons.

  • Haha, i wish. I'm west coast, my friend,Puyallup Washington. The point to my little comment was that The Smiths were a real band of real people interested in real emotion; Thats the reason they still matter today. Metallica, MBV, all the new bullshit today, its all angst. There isnt anything there.

I do agree with King Crimson though, id love to see Marr's take on that.

  • HAHA, check the map again, dumbass. Washington D.C. is on the east coast.

  • It could be with his son, Femi Kuti! =]

  • Awesome thought... How about this killer lineup:

    2008 Texas Jam Concert

    The Smiths

    The Scorpions

    Deep Purple

    Morissey

    Krokus

    Sarah McLachlan

    Slipknot

    Oprah

  • and then at the end after Oprah - Simple Plan... just for laughs.

  • fuck off and watch bon jovi you mug

  • you're so stupid, mate, that you didn't recognize the sarcasm.. you made yourself look downright stupid, lad. fuckin mug! LOL.. pip pip cheerio!!!!!!!

  • still \a mug

  • :^(

  • jonas bros.. f*** off, smiths the most original band ever, and they made it without playing the game, no videos, no PR, just amazing songs, lyrics, record covers, interviews.. sadly missed but they will live on forever through their songs..

  • Yeah so did the smiths.

    What makes:

    A your point irrelevant

B you look like a pillock

  • Hey- I like Metalica and Morrissey.

  • your clearly a goth! and dead to the world! which is how you want to be known! well done mission accomplished

  • A gorgeously young Steven Patrick!!! I want to go home back to 1985!

  • damn I remember this well..I was in 11th grade

  • Fucking A this is AMAZING!!!

WHY have i not heard of this fucking GREAT song or band???

    YES!

  • yes, why haven't you heard of the smiths?

  • yes, why ? how do you live without the smiths ??

  • Good question...

I suppose in a world of Jonas Brothers and regurgitated Metallica ("The Same Since 1990!") great, great music played by talented, talented people gets lost.

  • what is the conflict between morrissey and the lead singer of the cure?

  • Basically the lead singer just said "If Morrissey says Don't eat Meat I will because I hate Morrissey"

    A bit immature tbh

  • very basic indeed.

  • oh really, that was the whole conflict between the two. two highly opinionated people i'm guessing

  • Morrissey is so hot! And not just because of his music.

  • I gotta admit at first I was a little irritated about the syncing until I realised how they went about handling it. I mean, no deepthroathing the mic Kobain style, just little hints everywhere underlining how stupid synching really is. Wonderful. How can you not love them?

  • I love that Morrissey is so unafraid to be vulnerable that he never has to hide behind a microphone.

  • Most confident coolest performance of any musician I've ever seen.

    I could watch it forever.

  • Lawdy mama, these guys were good!

  • isnt this song fab or what 10/10

  • War is never without its casualties - the way this band was able to interpret the point of view from a warrior is haunting. The lyrics cry for shelter, the music sounds as if your on the battlefield, as this warrior cries out "I wanna go home"!

  • Definitely not a bore.....

  • This is just to magical for words, the way he flows with this outstanding hypnotic groove is beyond belief, well done son.

  • I wish I could tell Morrissey how this song speaks to my life experience...

  • still loving this

  • Too cool. Awesome band.

  • loving this

  • a fine example of English art.

  • GO MR ROURKE!

one of the best bass guitarrists of all times...

and, although he composed his own basslines for the songs, Mr. Morrissey and Mr. Marr wouldnt pay himn any composing royalties... he ended up very poor...

  • cool! he is not even pretending he's lip sinkin

  • I adore his voice!

  • The greatest band ever to be :-)

  • Morrissey lipsynched without a microphone for a reason. He wanted to do it in a different way than the other musicians back then. The others were acting like they were really singing. Morrissey wanted to show that it really was playback and the way he does it makes these performances very music video-like, not fake live performances.

  • thanks for the info

id rather hear him singing it live though

  • lol yeah me too.

that excuse, although true, is weak.

  • um, what? did what you say actually mean anything?

  • Check out Johnny at 00:30. Too cool for school. Yes, this performance is mimed, so what? It was for TV in the 80's. Anyways, it's the Smiths on stage - be grateful!

  • The lads looked so handsome in this one. Very well dressed and ready to rock! And that they did!

  • whatever you do, don't take this video down =)

  • As culled from Passions JustLike Mine

    22 February 1985 - Oxford Road Show (UK, BBC2)

    Shakespeare's Sister

    The Headmaster Ritual

    Lipsynched.

  • The vocals are obviously being mimed, not impressed. Morrissey is more than capable of singing live and well? Odd! What a shame.

  • This was the 80s. TV programmers didn't believe in having people play live, so they had no choice.

  • This is from The Oxford Road Show, i think they did Shakespeare's Sister on the same programme

  • Wheres his mic?

  • I think this is Top Of The Pops or a similar show. The bands almost always lip-sync on the show.

    <3

  • Anyone thats says Morrissey can not dance is out their fucking mind.

  • youtubtme take your fucking tongue out and stop talkin bullshit

  • the worst dancer of all time but for some reason it's so bad it becomes good

  • English can't dance but Damn! they sure know how to write great pop music; act; and their humor is superior (ie, "Extras" a la Ricky Gervais!)

  • Just buy 'Hatful of Hollow'. It's a good introduction

  • do they have other songs as good as this? because i just discovered this band and i want to buy their cds now after hearing this song

  • yeah id say so. there are like 40 videos here to your right, decide for yourself

  • Type "This Charming Man" in the searchbox. My all time favourite song.

  • you must be very young..

are you sure you want to know more?

there is hardly anything less than special here...

  • such a fun song

  • Morrissey and Stipe are friends. Lots of bands used jangly guitar sounds around this time, but aside from a few similar guitar tones... musically and lyrically REM and The Smiths are in two separate worlds.

  • I love this song.

  • Cuntry grammer.

  • You don't need to Shoeiboy. I was simply saying that early R.E.M. had the same jangly guitar sound. And since they came first, then it's technically The Smiths sounding like R.E.M. I'm not bashing on the Smiths- they are one of my favorite bands.

And also- my earlier comment was supposed to be a reply to Shirona3.

  • I put a lot of shit into my hair trying to look like that in 1985, which might explain why most of it has since fallen out.

  • I'm very sorry about that. My hair does that naturally, but mine will probably leave from bleaching it, lol.

  • Lol.........ya...metoo

probably the egg whites every day!

  • Fav. Smiths song...so creative with there sound no one sounds anything like them in over 30 years..

  • Try early R.E.M. (mostly Murmur and Reckoning). And R.E.M. came first. But I love both bands :)

  • oh dear an REM comparison.

    I won't dignify it with a response.

What a band The Smiths were.

  • dude i tryed still doesnt have the same feel like the smiths, might be due to them getting me threw alot

  • Sie mon, gracias, vanilla. Smiths es- ist schon! Sprechen sie deuch? Smiths du bist BOMB. E, muy, muy bueno. Did I get that right? Must travel more. La, la, la la de Ideyaa..........

  • letra, musica, interprete, grupo, todo es de una calidad sorprendente y un sentimiento sin comparacion.

  • bella bella bella

  • Who need a mic when you're Morressy? I don't care if he's lip-synching or not. Treavlin, so right, welcome to the 80's-

The 70's, 80's to mid 90's we shall never see again. Sigh- now it's Brittny Spears or "Hannah Montana" UGH. Someone tell me please, where has all the good, ORIGIONAL music gone? Something died in the late 90's up until now.

  • never more true statements made on the condition of music today. although i'm not a complete numbskull to some of todays contemporary music...mais, where HAS all the good, original music gone? peace

  • its around. you just gotta dig a bit and not do the whole morose elderly person routine lamenting about the state of music today. i say this because of the new fleet foxes and sigur ros albums and of course radiohead. morressy and the smiths are, no doubt, a gem.

  • Its more of a american society problem since alot of americans are real ignorant and i would even go far enough to say stupid that they dont even know the true beauty of music. Get america to somehow not be the idiots that they are and they will know the difference between bad art and good art. Look at the 70's, not many americans were idiots then and look at how much good stuff they achieved

  • I hope you are trolling for lolz (look it up). If not...your horrible use of punctuation and grammar make your claims at genius by proxy (look it up) pretty weak, you social retard.

  • You just see what's blown out of proportion from large Record companies. There's still good bands, you just haven't found them.
