Russians make great planes and pilots! Less frills than western counterparts but often better performance. It's interesting to see how the US and Russia branched out from the same basic stolen nazi technology. The only reason the US has dominated migs until now is that hey are flown by green middle eastern pilots, not Russian topguns. Hopefully we never see that airwar it will be ugly on both sides.

It looks impressive but the cobra maneuver is a maneuver of desperation and last resort. Speed=life in the world of air combat and the cobra bleeds off air speed at a phenomenol rate. It's really a one chance/one shot only maneuver. You only get one shot off (if you can get your opponent to fly past you) but usually if an opponent is this close behind you, they've already killed you.

@NdzDJ No the Angle of attack on the F-18 is enough for it to achive the manuver. So can the Saab J-35 and the Dassault Rafale. Just any plane that has a high angle of attack like the ones mentioned and a good way to guess what planes can is see if they are used on carrier's for conventianal landing (not vertical landing like the Harrier) :)

@vfIskullangel are you mad? the hornet and super hornet are two completely different aircraft. the only resembelance is the outward apperance. the super hornet is larger, has more wing area, better engines, has completely new avionics, and has modifications to areas of the airframe that distiguish it from the regular hornet. they really only share a name, look, and designation, nothing else.

Oh and just so you know, Canada built a plane doing mach 2 plus while the best in the US was still just over a Mach, Google the Iroquois engine and the AVRO Arrow. dude the f15 30 years old... the mig 29 came into service 9 years AFTER the eagle did. there was a lot of advancement in technology made between those 2 planes, so you can't really compare them.

that said, the PAK FA CAN'T touch the F22, I don't care what russian fanboys say.

@videofreak6699 For the record. The Convair F-106 Delta Dart made its first flight in 1956 and was able to hit Mach 2.3. The Avro CF-105 Arrow made its first flight in 1958 and hit Mach 2.

Further more; in Kosovo the 4 Mig-29's were shot down by F-15C's and in Iraq during the First Persian Gulf War 5 were shot down by F-15's. No F-15's were shot down by other fighters, a couple have been lost to SAMs I think.

I've outlined more than three times why the Russian equipment, in general, shits over it's US counterparts. The Mig 29 easily beats the F15 in a dogfight. I know it, you know it and the USAF knows it. That's why the USAF shat itself and wouldn't meet Russia for an exercise of various scenarios to dogfight after the Russians said "anytime, anywhere".

Neither F-14 nor F-15 can do that even experimental S/MTD because their engines would just stall at near zero air speed. New modifications of F-18 can do that the trick but still with speed > 0. F-22 is the first one that can fully repeat Pugachev's trick.

Simply because the F-15 is only an experimental aircraft (no US-Fighter in service was able to do this till the development of F-22) and the first pilot how performed this maneuver was Victor Pugachev, a Sovjet Test Pilot how gave this maneuver its name. And in general it is one of the most famous maneuvers of all sovjet/russian fighters since Mig-29/Su-27.

F-15 isn't an experimental aircraft, it is in active service and is most often compared to the Su-30. I haven't heard of it performing that maneuver though.

There is a debate, right. But I imagine the situation of the enemy directly behind you in a perfekt position to attack. This maneuver allows you to break from 500 km/h to 0 in just a moment. For the enemy it should be impossible to react that fast. But I heard it's more a training, because the pilot learns total control over his aircraft, everytimes useful.

With this maneuver you make yourself a perfect target, especally in situation you just said, when you have enemy behind you. Slow moving target is dead target, when you are locked on, you have to release flares and get away fast. This maneuver does exactly opposite of all that.

It is absolutely stupid to think that enemy wont react on such silly maneuver.
