Hitler's contempt for soldier's lives, with his orders to 'fight to the last man' & refusal to authorize fighting-retreats to more defensible positions was a source of Rommel's divided loyalties. He was too much a General's General to participate in Hitler's assassination, not out of loyalty. I think he came to see the war as a rotton cause.

On 8 November, 1939, Georg Elser set a timer on a bomb he designed and planted. Unexpectedly, because of the pressure of wartime business, Hitler made a much shorter speech than usual and left the hall(the Bürgerbräukeller) ten minutes before the bomb went off, killing eight people. Had Hitler still been speaking, the bomb almost certainly would have killed him, with consequences which can only be guessed at.
