the language part is quite interesting. Chinese followed by three different European languages....Geography and population wise, EU is pretty similar to China. But China has become a unified nation for over 2000 yrs while Europe is still divided with different languages. its just interesting.
passenger flights are always all ifr: and the very least the must do is a precision approach a non precision approach is hoever possible at smaller airports as long as minimums are met or use alternate
I will write in English and not Finnish as I already know suomeksi:P but... why in mandarin chinese??? that was a little bit weird. Swedish, that I can understand as someone learns Swedish in School as a third language in Finland.
That`s all right! The flight was coming from Beijing and there was more than one chinese flight attendants serving chinese passengers with their mother language. I don`t know if there is anymore chinese cabing crew on board with Finnair`s flight to Beijing, Shanghai or Kanton?!
What's your point? Finnair had two crashes in the 60s although their name wasn't Finnair back then. (And in one of the accidents the pilots were drunk--there's a culture of safety for you.) Besides, statistics are totally unmeaningful for such a small fleet as Finnair's. One of the reasons for not having crashed (at least in the last 50 years) is, statistically speaking, lack of aircraft to crash.
It must have been a scary adventure. If my mother were in that aeroplane, she would have pissed in her panties. She is very afraid of flying. Thanks a million.
The long thing that is oriented downwards most of the time is a flap. The smaller square bit next to it (closer to the fuselage) is an aileron. The thing that pops up immediately after the landing is a spoiler.
Well..of course the announcement is in all those languages. Finland has two languages: Finnish and Swedish. And mandarin because they come from Beijing...and English for those who don't speak any of those three.
Nice landing in rainy weather! At first, I didn't make the distinction between the Swedish and Finnish announcement since it sounded like one continuous announcement. Then, I listened to again and realized that the first time, the flight attendant says Helsinki and the second one, Helsingfors. That's how you can tell.
This video is starting at 14:24 EET (02:24 PM) (local time). Obviously she should say nice afternoon, but I think that they don`t have any other options in their book to say than good morning, day, or evening...
The Finnish word for "afternoon" is a combination of the words for "night" and "day". So evening is the true translation word for word, even though we would call it afternoon. She probably only ever speaks English while on the plane.
The Finnish word for "afternoon" (iltapäivä) is a combination of the words for "ilta" (evening) and "day" (päivä). In Finland afternoon is the time of day from 12:00 (noon) to sunset, when the evening begins.
If it is like in Sweden, even at 10:00 pm looks like it is 3:00pm. The sun goes down only for a few hours by midnight on the summer. I think that's the reason why she said have a nice evening.
that s a wet one

Ha, I was expecting Finnish first, followed by Swedish, Chinese, and English. But I guess Finnair values their Chinese-speaking customers very much.

Great landing, isn't that considered a long flight for an MD-11? Not that i've been on one... haha, just wondering.

There are only a handful of Asian F/As in European Airlines, mainly acting as translators. They only fly routes to and from their own country.
Labor unions usually don't allow airlines to hire more Asian F/As, fearing that their pay conditions would be eroded.

whooh, i think the speed was a little bit fast it looks like about 250 knots instead of ~180 during the landing
vitekfdr 4 years ago
This video was filmed by Nikon Coolpix 5900 at 15 frames per second.
YouTube`s FLV format is playing it around 25 fps, so it looks a little bit faster.
I think the landing speed was quite all right.
