These documentaries on North Korea are fascinating. The more and more and I watch it the stronger I see a parallel between their socio-political structure and religion. The narrator as well as a lot of people here keep repeating the question "how can these people just believe all this?" with this genuine sense of dumb-foundeness but the answer to me is obvious. As for the elderly I have seen other docs with elderly around. Even video's of North Korean tv where elderly are interviewed. One was about some restaurant and another was about ice cream and soda and a good bit of elderly were around in the second video. Even this video about a North Korean theme park I believe there was elderly people around.
The part about not looking in the eye is such crap. I've seen other docs of NK where people looked at the camera and people filming and even interacting with cameras such as waving and smiling. At least these film makers are respectful and mindful of the tour guides situation. I've seen some people be so rude and just not mindful of the guides and try to argue etc. As to how the people get through it I guess brainwashing is a pretty damn powerful thing.
