  • With lots of Etudes, they really develop the right hand's technique, but the left hand is what shapes this as a piece in its own right. Without the delicate but present balance of the right hand slightly less projected than the left hand, it seems to loose a little bit of the line for me. Having said that however, technically brilliant!

  • Me gusta lo que hizo con los ultimos cuatro acordes. Aunque parezca algo sencillo eso se puede hacer de muchas maneras y creo que el ha hallado una muy buena.

I like the final chords, a fine ending

  • Left hand never comes out. Looks and sounds like Kempf was too busy making sure he played all the notes on the right hand to care for the true melody. A disappointment.

  • @bontempo01

Very true. Neither I don't hear the left hand's melody and I don't consider myself deaf.

  • Crazy comments. Left hand is melody and short accents not cantabile at all. right hand must be clear and smooth as Czerny but not leggierissimo. those who know say nothing so true at youtube. Most young pianists will play this etude. In many of the etudes melody is given to bass while right hand has a problem to figure out. Kempf 's solutions r so musical so right for Chopin style !

  • I notice Chopin uses this technique in a lot of his pieces, such as black keys.

  • Really good performance of this difficult etude. Thank you for your upload!

  • I think its too tense and rudy...The left hand is not "cantabile" enough(only the last frase in Coda really got it,and its really nice),beides,I dont see the reason to lift up the fingers so much(right hand)...just an opinion...I like more Lisitsa version...

  • @pincheruso What do you think of the Horowitz version? I've listened to Lisitsa and the Horowitz version and I like the Horowitz one the best.

  • @heyyy19 Oh,no doubts -Horowitz is one the best, especially, early recording...There is a nice record of Backhaus, from the whole set,and I think, also,Bleschac (not sure how does it spell)ones, from the competition...

  • this is like, wtf hard

  • Bastard Chopin! , if some one be in this level there is no need to Etude!!, I don't know why he called it Etude!, Etude should be for poor people like me want to be able to play like this! not for someone this good to play better.,,...................daaaamn

  • This is an amazing performance. I am still learning this piece, it is one of my favorites of all of Fréderic's etudes... However, not to sound like a douchebag, but I think you could have brought out the left hand melody much more. When the focus is shifted to the left hand's melody, I feel that the song gains much more character and emotion.

  • C'mon man you're telling the living legend Freddy Kempf what to do? I think he knows what he's doing.. lol jk. I think it has to do with the sound quality of the recording. I'm pretty sure if they set up the mic's in the piano it would sound a lot clearer.

  • horowitz sad that this etude is for left hand... not right !

  • The left hand is certainly what makes this piece hard D:

  • so effortless O_O

  • Just love his interpretation so much. A lot of things can be learned from this video when I practice daily.

  • Kempf is one of Russia's favorite pianists for over a decade now.. (And he's married to a Russian woman :-)I've met him at several concerts in Moscow. The Russian audience is blown away each time. One time, he had to come out 4 times to play encore!

  • he has beautiful hands

  • wtf

  • lol.. he does

  • My 2. experience with the comments that just made my day XD "he has beatiful hands" -> "wtf" xD xD xD

  • The piano seems to trap him.

  • this is infinite level.

  • I like those arpeggios at the end. Nevermind - I love the whole piece, and the whole performance!

  • what level is this piece?

  • bsd level

  • I think this is the hardest etude personally, more difficult than Op. 10 no. 1 and 2 even. Great job!

  • nooo..... it was quite easy for me to learn this etude....op.10; no.1; C major is much more difficult

  • @BoristheONEandonly

    Agreed.

  • sunshine

  • i think they deliberately filmed this from the left side of the piano to emphasize the left hand.

  • i love the sound !!

  • This is a lovely version, but i think that Lisitsa's is better.

  • I LOVE KEMPF!!!!!

  • If I had that piano and that haircut I could do that! Haha nah he's amazing, I couldn't play like him

  • y'a rien à faire je ne peux pas le voir en peinture ce pianiste !

  • Your perfcermance is absolutely natural without efforts(!!!) THANK YOU lots and lots,,, and also I would like to listen to etudes by Liszt,,especially my favorate "Snow Storm" (Shasse Neige)

  • I was going to leave a comment saying he needs to hire an audio engineer...

I couldn't imagine spending 10,000 hours of my life on the piano and not even care about my work being displayed with this audio quality.

  • why do you talk of your mother?

  • fantastic piece. I'm working on it now, but i'm not anywhere close 2 playing it this well.

i gave up on working on the harp one, it was too hard

  • Op25 No.1 is easier than this though...good luck with this one.

  • The harp one isn't so bad actually. I'm starting this one Op. 10 no. 6 now, it's madness! I noticed that you left this message 2 months ago. How's the piece going now?

  • Bravo!!

  • I have Freddy's etude cd and the playing is much better. This etude in F was Chopin's first. This etude is not that tough if your right hand can "leap". Much easier for me at least than the "Winter Wind".

  • cool?

  • cool?

  • It's supposed to make you happy xD After all, it isn't nicknamed the "Sunshine" Etude for nothing xD

It was brilliant, (certainly better than my attempts :S) though the beginning trill (hang on... is it even called a trill? I've completely forgotten all my music theory :S) is supposed to be much longer, and he seems to skip notes in the right hand, i think-? Anyway some parts in the right hand sound as if they've been skipped. On the theme, the left hand is supposed to be heard more.

  • i <3 you

  • Huh? Why?

  • i<3you

  • Love this etude! It's definately my favourite!!

  • my favorite of chopin's etudes

  • this song makes me so happy

  • Well I can understand his mistakes, this song is played so quickly that the first page is done in 20 seconds. The right hand is meant to be play non stop, it plays continuously with no pausing and he often skips. But i am not going to penalize his score because I have tried playing this piece and i perform worse than this. This is abruptly a difficult song to play. This piece is truly a pinnacle misunderstanding, its only for the masters of the piano.

  • like me ?

  • like me?

  • shutup you annoying person, and enjoy the music

  • I just got done taking a shower!

    i love this video Y0

  • Average performance. Nothing special or memorable about it.

  • great feeling. Right hand seems to be unclear/skips notes occasionally, though i'd be happy myself to work up to his level of technique

  • I love this piece, and he plays it beautifully, thanks for posting this!

  • heyy is this wil. kempf's descendent?

  • I think Freddy Kempf is the offspring of Wilhelm Kempff. Besides both having the musical gene, there's also a physical resemblance if you study their faces. I've not been able to document the connection; perhaps Freddy was not acknowledged. His bio says "German father and Japanese mother", with no reference to Kempff. Likewise Wilhelm's obit mentions five children not named. No reference to having ever been married to a Japanese woman. Perhaps Freddy took his name but changed the spelling?

  • I like it a lot! He takes the time he needs to make some music! He breaths, i like the phrasing, he es clear, all the notes are clear. I like it

  • In Colombia there a man very virtuos. He too play that 24 etudes... HE IS WIHT ZIMERMAN O KEMPF SURE.... SOBRADÍSISMO IS THE BEST PIANIST OF COLOMBIA JUAN DOMINGO CORDOBA AGUDELO. Lo tenemos tan cerca como podemos y no lo vemos. !

  • Zimerman>Kempf (obviously)

  • you're right,but he plays well,too.

  • This piece sounded really lively and fun!

  • is he the son of wilhelm kempff?

  • wilhelm Kempff has 2 f's and Freddy Kempf has 1 f

  • i think in the beginning you started out really well--but you started slowing down after the first three measures

have you heard of Elena Kuschnerova's rendition of this piece? it's fantastic--clear and rapid

    but still you played amazingly

  • the first three measures ends after about 8 seconds

  • he's slow

  • you are a moron!

  • Accents? Chopin marked the first semiquaver of every group of four with an accent. It's in the score. It's not meant to be an even tone all the way.

  • Yeah, I know...but no one ever plays it like that. I think Chopin meant that those notes needed to be heard and stressed for the purpose of rhythm, not really accents though.

  • Keep these videos coming! I want the complete Chopin Etudes

  • Excellent - with passion

  • I love the etudes. They're so impressive. I have to play them soon.

  • Not so great on this piece as Dmitry Poperno, but it was good nonetheless. (though he was rather slow)

  • ya i agree he's a bit slow on this piece.

  • great ! so clear

  • Wow! What a pianist! Those fingers...! Wonderful!

  • Thanks for all the videos you uploaded of Freddy Kempf!

    I liked them all!

  • Keep em coming please!Thanks!
