I love the stripes, but was anyone else expecting a nice acoustic song, and get the shit scared out of them by the opening riff lmao? fuck my headphones just tried to kill me
ill admit i was expecting this to be awful. Im a huge RJ fan, n i like his version better. but this song is far from "bad". Good cover. Any ballsy dj's/mc's out there that see this, try this guitar n drums backing with Roberts voice and itll be my favorite song of all time.
This is a really cool take on the Robert Johnson song. I've always appreciated that Jack White never seems to try to impress as a musical virtuoso but instead puts tons of pathos and emotion into his performance. Its all about the feeling.
@surfercrow The stripes have done a lot to keep the blues alive. They have a ton of respect for the early song writers, and even if it's not to your particular liking you have to appreciate the effort and the pure musicianship. Jack has got an amazing talent for presenting music that folks love. You may not appreciate it, but millions of others do. I did actually find a Johnson cd last year, and now I have respect for the original tunes too. Try not to be so closed minded.
@RussianThickness1 Hey, whoa dude, hate to tell you this but you're wrong. The Stones' version is a little bit classic! Worst thing you ever heard? Really?!? Try searching for 'worst cover ever! *the final count down*' on here and then tell me the Stones' cover is the worst thing you ever heard!
tbh I like all three versions of 'Stop Breakin' Down' I've heard (Johnson, Stones, Stripes). So shoot me.
Just listen to whatever you want and screw everyone else. Even if it's bad electro-pop disco, or Nigeria folk music. If it rocks your boat, who cares.
What bugs me is that all the "cool" kids today listen to Good Charlotte Fall Out Boy My Chemical Romance and Green Day but I couldn't disagree more I think this song is great and I listen to The White Stripes R. Johnson Beck and bands like that. Although this comment will get a thousand thumbs down I wanted to make my point.
no thumbs down from me, but it's not about listening to the 'right' band. it's about listening to a wide variety of music and finding what's cool about each type. sure music is a way to express your individuality, but it's also a way to appreciate shit that's different than you as well.
It`s the evolution of music rather than what`s cool. there is a new musical era every 5 years or so. Everyone picks up a little influence along the way and tries to be more creative than the last. When everyone starts to sound alike again, it will change again for better or worse. Green Day seems to be standing the test of time. No thumbs down from me either.
good point only one problem:slavery was abolish in the 1860s well before the 1930s. true they had hard live but i doubt many if any of them had living realatives who were slaves and pay attention there is no apostrophe at the end of decades
Have you heard of Jim Crow laws, Plessey v Ferguson, etc?
In Mississippi until 1966:
"Any person...who shall be guilty of printing, publishing or circulating printed, typewritten or written matter urging or presenting for public acceptance or general information, arguments or suggestions in favor of social equality or of intermarriage between whites and Negroes, shall be guilty subject to fine not exceeding five hundred (500.00) dollars or imprisonment not exceeding six (6) months or both."
I was listening to WS on my ipod on the way to school and I realized that every other kid on the bus was listening to rap music and hip hop. WHile I was lsitening to Son House covers.

I'm the coolest kid. I listen to the blues! Led Zeppelin, the black keys, jimi hendrix, the white stripes, and all that legendary rock from the 70s was just the blues taking on a new form.
not where im from, the d.c. maryland area. cool kids listen to indie shit, hip hop or rock... or whatever they want really. like MGMT, Deerhunter, The Cool Kids, A Tribe Called Quest, The Black Kids, the Black Keys, Silversun Pickups, Datarock... and stuff like that.
I love the stripes. I like this song as a song itself. But as an RJ cover? not even close. I think the Stones have the best cover to date. That version is just so lively and loose. Groovey? Signature Stones sound without butchering. Not a song you want to cover with distortion as a tribute. No knock on jack.
Obviously it doesn't sound anything like RJ but in a way it's more authentic for a couple of white kids from Detroit ( and they don't come much whiter than Jack, lol) to jump on a distortion pedal than it would be if they tried to sound like the original.
actually, screenname87 is right. Jack White grew up in the Hispanic part of town while meg grew up in another area. Just look up any of the biographies made about them.
That's one of the rawest guitar tones I've ever heard and a voice with a ton of soul--no butchering here!! What's the point of trying to make a cover sound just like the original?

The point is that the these band(Fall out boy...and new similar bands) have a serious lack of soul to put on their songs!!!
I mean, all the original (around 30's) blues-men had a great motive 'cause they had pain and true feelings about they hard life back then(slavery).
That's why they could express so many emotions in a chord, note, guitar bend, guitar slide, soulful voice...
