Senpai/Kouhai can be as simple as having a Senpai and kohai, but it can also get complex such as having a Senpai's Senpai, which both are your Senpai, but one is above another, etc. But it really comes down to the Senpai's personality. The bucho that i've worked under before was a total jerk. He would say some of the ukenai-est jokes, majide. And I would just sit there, listen patiently, be polite, and more importantly, pour his beer. lol

ya, respect is very important too. Ultimately respect should be the basis, but humans aren't perfect so it can never be spot-on.
