For all of those who think this film is a sequel to the 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz" it is NOT. It was an UNOFFICIAL sequel. The only official sequel to the 1939 film is the 1974 animated film, "Journey Back to Oz."
I saw RTO in theaters when i was 4 two times despite it did scared me at first but not as much as the movie "Magic" with that dummy or "Making Contact" which both scared me the most. I think it's a brilliant and underrated masterpiece of fantasy cinema.
@anatimedream Yes, you do. You win a handshake from me! Would you believe that I went over a year without noticing that typo in there, and by then it was too late to do anything as the original files had been erased? Oh well, hope you enjoy the rest of the doc.
@MeatballsMarlowe Hi, I'm Terry ((handshake)). Pleasure meeting you. It happens to the best of us. I'm a fellow filmmaker as well and you can watch some of my videos here on my YouTube channel. I just had a thought of 'Return to Oz' for some reason today. You gave such a speedy reply too. I haven't even watched the full length of your documentary yet; however, you have me intrigued with the question you pose of: 'What is entertainment.' I hope to find out.
I never actually got to see this movie as a kid, but I can remember back in the 80's, there was a picture book of the film at the place where I got my haircut. I finally got to see it in highschool where the disney channey aired the film really late at night, however, after I moved to college, I managed to find a used copy of the film on DVD. If I hadn't found it, I might still think it was all in my head and never really be sure if it existed or not!
@SodCorley Yeah, I agree. There was talk that it might come out on Bliu-Ray this year since it's thje 25th anniversary, but nothing's come of it. I'm sure everything will be out on Blu-Ray eventually, but it's always a long wait for those of us who like lesser known movies.
@MeatballsMarlowe - my Dad was just in LA for the remix of RTO for the anniversary, so yeah, it will probably be out on BluRay. Thanks for putting up this Doc. I'd never seen it before and not sure if my Dad has either. I'll point it his way.
@blmurch Hello, is your dad Walter Murch? If so, it would truly be an honor for me to know he had seen my work. As you'll see in the credits, he is one of the individuals I dedicated this documentary to.
Thanks for making this (whoever did) RTO is one of those films that just amazes me that it was ever made. Such a dark and beautiful film--and if you show it to kids, they usually love it.
So do i, it's a nice worthy follow-up to a masterpiece. Do you think this movie is darker then "The Dark Crystal" when it comes to 80's fantasy family movies?
Well what about other dark fantasies of the 80's like The Neverending Story, Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night, Black Cauldron, Last Unicorn, Secret of NIMH, Willow or Krull? or lighter fare like Labyrinth and Princess Bride?
Love those great '80's fantasy flicks, though Return to Oz is probably still my fave, though I could be forgetting some. Love Henson's "The Witches" too!
Oh i also forgot to mention "Fire and Ice" and "Heavy Metal" which are excellent fantasy movies including the highly underrated cult German supernatural horror fantasy "Making Contact (a.k.a. Joey)" which is nearly as dark as this movie.
Oh i forgot to mention that Gary Kurtz who did Star Wars Episodes 4 and 5 and The Dark Crystal was the executive producer of this movie, so you know it's dark.
I cried with joy when Dorothy managed to find the scarecrow near the end. I was six then and that scene stayed with me this entire time.

Do I win a prize for pointing out the redundancy of the extra 'the'?
