A work of genius that captures the essence of Caravaggios paintings.
I love the way that Jarman mixes the contemporary with the 17 century.. Dressing his caracters in todays dress if you see what I mean Just as Caravaggio did in many of his paintings.
I saw abouit 10 mins. of this movie before I got bored (A.D.D.) & had to move on. Too bizarre for me. Sort of like a Fellini movie. Yikes!!! I hear so many women say that they "love Sean Bean. He's so sexy/" Especially my cousin, & I just don't get his appeal. Great actor...but sexy??? Ummm...no...not to me. But...after seeing this video...I finally get it. Wow!!! B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!! Just the way I like my men. :)
@vickiehill1 I felt the same way, when I saw him in "Sharpe" on TV .. skinny & uncouth. But he certainly grows on you after a while .. even with all of his clothes on! Must be that smile & swagger!
@vintageification it's a art film aspect; Caravaggio used modern day props and clothing in his paintings which depicted scenes further back in history
First of all.. they use the f word all the time, and second of all they have elctronic calculators.. that's just insane cause caravaggio was like what? Barock? :D
Oh, I bet you'll be surprised by then! Remember Caravaggio has not be forgiven by Chruch for the crime he commited and legally he has a law edict against him!
This is a well strange film. whats up with the modern day equipment like the calculators and the glossy magazine and the weird mix of time as well? It's probably all symbolic like something alluding to the soul or an emotion I'm thinking but indeed just as the artist was a master painter himself so this film merits the same honour as the artist: its brilliant, I like the film for its sheer ride through events and for its eccentric approach. An unusual film with some interesting effects.
Ah, tou-chay! ;-) I getcha. No, it was a genuine question, did the Elizabethans use the f word? I'm hearing it all the time in films and I was just wandering if theres some truth to it.
love this

@triadpairs Me too , but you cant have a ( naked ?) 12 year old boy playing the part .
The sensors would not allow it

I think Derek wanted to add a different dimension to the film perhaps to make it more accessible to a wider and contemporary audience.

Caravaggio didn't know how to draw. He traced over the reflected image using a camera obscura. This is why there are no drawings attributed to him.

It was beautiful up to the moment when Tilda said 'Fucking'. Could somebody PLEASE tell me whether the Elizabethans knew the F word or not???
MarieEtOlivia 3 years ago
Marie: Did Italian merchants use modern calculators? ;)

Marie: It's possible, but I couldn't say for sure.
Though if they didn't use 'fuck' itself, they probably had a word that was VERY similar.
In purpose anyway. ;)

i think its so stupid that they put jazz and tuxedos in a movie about a painter from the
17th century, what the f##k!!!!!!! they killed it.

I gotta be conservative about it this and agree, that music just isn't relevant. Something much darker would be appropriate.
