  • Her performance in this movie is AMAZING.its a low budget film but her acting in just.unbelievable.words r useless..i have so much respect 4 her..n dont believe her daughter.joan found out bout that book b4 she died n wrote christina n christopher outta the will cause joan found out they were working on the book 2gether...oh well i dont feel bad at all 4 christina..love u joan 4 everxoxoxoxo

  • Very talented lady.

  • I like that she's desperately emotion throughout a wardrobe test. A little too much vodka, Joan?

  • @HollywoodHillsCookie The Wardrobe/Makeup tests were to see how the Actor/Actress will look & Move on film and what will work and what wont. Joan Crawford more than likely is showing how she will act while in those costumes & makeup to give the Producers and Director a better idea than just moving like a robot and standing like a statue. JC was a great actress and legend by this time and she always wanted to give more and to be better.

  • She's very sexy!!! I love her!

  • interesting.

  • 29 ? I did not buy 49...She did not like any woman "replacing" her...and they said...Cause ya in the chair..thats why ! ;p

  • the poodle looked terrified.

  • she looked younger with minimal makeup tests.

  • She was born to entertain us.

  • WOW! Even her wardrobe test is glamorous, no wonder Joan was addicted to film making, having people worship you has to feed your ego. The lighting that just features her eyes is straight from film noir movies. The black wig that she wears looks just like her Mildred Pierce hairdo, except not worn with a snood, but instead worn loose to the shoulders. It's a hoot when Joan takes off her false eyelashes in this screen test and just throws them on the floor like the Diva that Joan was.

  • i like how JC stays in character for each of her outfits.

  • @MarkLemonds Yes, Joan Crawford was always the consummate artiste actress--ever originally resourceful and creative with--and tour de force inspired by--the props, costumes, circumstances, characters at hand. She was a great, noble artistic spirit who left a half century of timelessly great, ambitious and versatile film work. She was a female Napoleon of Hollywood!

  • Don't forget that in the movie, she wears the wig and tacky clothes because her daughter wants to remember her the way she was 20 years before she went to the nut house.

  • that creepy music goes well with her scary face

  • 2:43 her legs were amazing for a woman her age!

  • Love ~-3

  • The Lucy in the makeover scenes with that horrible (not to mention rather ridiculous) black wig, is THE second ugliest wig in cinema existence. The #1 spot will always be the Phyllis Detrichson(sp?) wig worn by Barbara Stanywck, which has the same idea going, but is also bleach blond (well, OK it's a B&W movie) in 'Double Indemnity.' and the wig is extremely phoney/fugly in every possible way. The damned thing was upstaging Ms. Stanwck at every turn, giving her a very good run for her money!

  • A Superstar doing a shit role.

  • @youpumpertube Tell that to Barbra Streisand re "Little Fockers" and "Meet the Fockers". How about her in a musical of "Strait Jacket"? :)

  • Damn, love those Eyebrows

  • Lucy at 29 YIKES!

  • hush, hush sweet lucy ...

    chop, chop sweet lucy

chop off his head and hers!

  • I meant also the movie.

  • and I'm tellin' you, that bitch beat me!! NOT SPANKED BUT BEAT MY ASS!! I do a perfect imitation of her. I'll show you at lunch on Mon.

  • @tuxarocha Not anymore. Now I prefer to be called Clark.

  • There is no actress like Miss Crawford today.

  • UGLY LESBIAN SLUT!!!

  • Just found this--pretty cool. I sense that Joan seemed kind of nervous through the testings. She just oozed presence and style, though--except maybe for Faye Dunaway, I can't think really of any other post-Hollywood Golden Age actresses who carried that style and presence into these later cinematic decades--and no pun intended in thinking of Faye with respect to Joan, but seems so true. I think Joan would've been a good fashion model had she not gone into acting.

  • Joan, of course, is one of the most memorable American movie stars. Even in trash like this she made you sit on the edge of your seat!!

  • @windstorm1000 - it's a screen test not a feature movie...

  • You too can look like this at 60. Simply dunk your face in a sink of ice water and drink vodka instead of water. Also, use a small amount of moisturizer and never hit the children where the bruises can be seen.

  • @mybestchanel are you christina?

  • Comment removed

  • I cant believe she is at her 60s here! she looked the best and she aged gracefully!

  • @MsRisque no, but your mother is

  • those eyebrows are spooky

  • I don't know about anyone else, but I believe Joan aged terrifically given the times without all the anti aging knowledge. I think Lauren Bacall was the most beautiful in all of Hollywood, but she didn't look nearly as good as Joan at 60, neither did Bette Davis. Joan smoked just as much as those ladies, but her features just aged very regally and classically.

  • I'm not a Joan hater, I love her work. However i really think she looks absurd when she's trying to look 29 when in fact she was 60ish. It's hideous and worse than a caricature of a Joan Crawford drag queen. I think this was an absolute desperate attempt to look glamorous in order to work. Partly our fault because the public loves youth over age (as much now as then), but also partly the industry's fault as well. It was almost painful to watch.

  • @mnorth1964 A plot line in this film was Joan's character trying to look younger and escape herself. The screen test didn't have anything to do with society dictating her look as an actress. It was for the part.

  • @Suthrngothic Ok, I guess it's obvious I haven't seen the entire film.

  • She must have really been self conscious of her neck area cuz in almost every movie, they have to have that shadow bar across the front of her neck in closeups.

  • Maybe they should have given her the role in "Bewitched"..Domestic hottie at her age!!!

  • don't attack me but had Joan been around these days- so many more proceedures for cosmetic surgery could have done wonders for her still beautiful face.

  • awesome star

    lol @baronochs

  • The background music is perfect for this video. Dramatic with an edge of hysteria.

  • This is the definition of a great star. There are very few like her today.

  • this is crap.. why should such a star have to lower herself to this.. oh joan

  • Thats how I feel every morning. God bless Joan.

  • I love Joan only she could pull off playing a 29 year old in her 60's or was it 50's?

  • This is awesome, never seen this one before .

  • Davis, never one to hold back on the topic of Joan, compared Joan's rubber boobs to "the Hollywood Hills." You can see them here. Especially annoying to Bette was that Joan wore them all through "Whatever Happened..." She groused that Joan's character was supposed to have been starving to death, yet there they are. "Does she think the audience are (sic) idiots??" Oddly, at 1:20, Joan seems to be imitating her nemesis Bette.

  • Some stars aged relatively well. Kate Hepburn and Joan Crawford get old. yes....but they are still retain quite strong screen identities.

  • OH, GREAT, NOW SHE GONNA BURN THE DOG.

  • I love it....!

    chuckinla, you are rigth.

  • Classic example of Joan trying to play a young person with an old womans body!! BUT great video and LOVE Joan C.

  • They all smoked in those days. Too bad. It killed so many of them, who might have lived much longer.

  • the 49 year old version was better looking than 29

  • i will never understand why people didn't like this movie, i loved it!

  • @ilovemeryl So did I. Especially the climax of the movie. Surprisingly creepy.

  • @1:17, Joan totally worked that wig and that cigarette. I LOVE to imitate that gesture. Absolutely fabulous! She was sexy, bitchy and tough as nails. Can you imagine if "Dynasty" had debuted 15 years earlier with Joan in the role of Alexis Colby? I can only imagine the "mega bitch" persona she could have imbued into the character. Stop and think about it for a minute. Makes sense, doesn't it? :-)

  • Fierce honey!, Fierce!

  • WOW, I definitel wouldn't believe the age 29 but gosh - she did NOT looked like 59 years old lady! What a beauty she was!!!

@chuckina - I so agree, she seems to me like she lived every tiny drop of her fame...in my personal opinion : sometimes it was fortunately, sometimes unfortunately.

  • Hollywood did amazing things back then with lighting and makeup ONLY!

  • Delicious, or pathetic?

Absolutely sweet and tender, I think.

  • She was still so beautiful....but....

Why oh why did someone not take her aside and tell her that her eyebrows were not working in her favor?!!!!

Her face and cheekbones were amazing....Not to mention her knock-out figure at 59 years of age!!!! It is her brows that make her look old!

    Great post!

    Thanks

  • @BrentAudi I was thinking the same thing. Her eyebrows just didn't suit her at all. I guess when they get that big, no one can tell them anything.

  • I'm surprised to see a lot of these negative comments about her. I think she looks great for age 59 and I think she aged extremely well looking better as she got older. The movie is a B movie but it's fun and she's doing what she can as an older actor.

  • That woman was a great big bucket of crazy!

  • @detoth67 oh really.....did YOU know her personally?

  • I had to take out my calculator, because they were crunching some serious numbers in terms of the ages. I am shaking my head in disbelief as a result.

Anyway, I love Joan, and this was a real treat.

Where did that little dog go - I don't recall it in the movie.

  • @ 0:44 she freaking looks like baby jane hudson.

  • I have often wondered what Joanie C looked like at the age of 29...now I know...a WITCHEEPOOH!!! (smile).

  • Why bother making the movie-this was scary enough! I feel so sorry for that little dog she

Is holding -he looks scared. Or maybe the cigarette fumes were getting to him.

  • @1:29 I think she actually looks good for someone who is 60 years old! But the whole thing is pretty creepy...

  • Well if she's got it, she might as well flaunt it XD.

  • @dearyogini For me she looks not "good" but beautiful !!! Better the dressed 60-y-JC than 10 naked girlies !!! She rocks evewn in her sixties ...

  • The cigarettes and booze really aged her bad. She's almost delusional trying to play young and sexy with the long wig at 0:59 She's hoping the soft lighting over the avalanche of make up will make her look sexy at 1:27 and always with a cigarette burning. I love the way she wants to back hand whom ever is off camera at 2:14 while acting like she's 21 with the mouth open flipping the stiff wig thinking that will make a difference?

  • she looks about 70

  • I love this...thank you for posting it.. its a fascinating insight into the actress at work. I love the bit where she takes off her false lashes and flings 'em away...she had those hand made for her every day you know.

You also see her knitting...she was a compulsive knitter...and crocheter ...always had to be doing something with her hands.

Love her open natural smile at the end... from all accounts she was a lot of fun...despite a lot of nonsense written by her daughter to the contrary.

  • She always looked like a man in drag to me.

  • Joan wonderful!!!!!!

Does someone knows what music is this?

    (sorry my english)

  • Hi Alrebeque...this is the music from the movie 'Straight Jacket'.

It really is a very good film though low budget...Joan is fantastic in it and lends lots of depth to it.

Do watch the whole movie if you get a chance x

  • Thanks tyjeffries!!!

No matter how low-budget, she es fantastic anywhere.

I´m eager to see this film, where could I see it? do you know some place online?...

    thnks

  • Yes.. I bought it very cheaply on Ebay.... just put the title in and see what comes up... I think it is quite available. Its William Castle Director. Its a fab movie. You wll love it

Take a look on my Youtube page ... i did a musical about Joan...'Portrait Of Joan' you can see some of the numbers on there.

    Best Ty x

  • OK , THANKS!

    i see your yt page.

  • One of the few times we can clearly see how tiny Joan was, just five feet. Always surprised people who met her; she was so larger than life.

  • The music is scary

  • Joani was beautiful... even in her fifties. She looks larger-than-life but was only around five feet tall, I believe! One of my all-time faves!!! God bless you JC!

  • I love it!

  • Joan Crawford was a foot-tease. I just know she loved teasing us foot guys with her lovely feet.

  • Did anybody ever hear about how Joan once ate out Marilyn Monroe's pussy?

  • And you actually believe that?

  • Considering almost everyone in Hollywood both then and now is bisexual - yes. There are tons of articles about it, and I honestly do believe it.

I wonder if they had a sex tape? lol

  • I wouldn't believe everything I read. I know people think James Dean and Marlon Brando were bisexual, yet there is unaccurate information to prove it.

  • Brando stated himself that he had, "homosexual experiences" and that he was not ashamed of it.

I even heard that Viven Leigh caught him and Laurence Olivier making out at a pool party. AWKWARD! lol

  • Yeah, I've read about that too. But, Joan Plowright, his 2nd wife, claims the Brando story is fake, but Olivier did have a fling with Danny Kaye, that I do believe because Danny Kaye was gay. So maybe Olivier was the only one? Along with Patsy Kelly, and Talluah Bankhead.

  • Dont know about Dean, but Brando was bisexual without doubt and admitted as much.

  • actually and i am trying to say this as poliely as i can...if you do a serch on marlon brando there is a picture of him with the male member in his mouth, ive seen the picture myself and was shocked..but its there and its real and yes he was bi

  • I've seen it, and looks like someone knows how to photoshop really well.

  • Yes she did and Marilyn told that to her therapist. Actually, Marilyn ate her out and Joan loved it and wanted more, but Marilyn didn't.

  • @DiabolicalAngel and you were there?

  • pervert twister vision5. Grow a brain somewhere else, use the one between you ears.

  • Pervert? It actually happened douchebag, Joan gave a screaming orgasm.

  • @TwisterVision5 Yes and Marilyn ate hers. It's a true story. It was documented by Marilyn's psychologist and published I think fairly recently. Marilyn (paraphrased) said, "Oh Crawford. We went back to her house and went down on each other. She shrieked like a maniac and had a giant orgasm. She wanted to do it again, but I told her I didn't much like doing it with a woman. Then Joan got spiteful." Even JC's daughter says her mother had same sex affairs. Joan was definately bisexual.

  • Yup! Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor and soooo many more who are giant icons were so petite! I still die knowing that Judy Garland, who I think is beyond compare was 4 /11! Can you imagine!

  • fun!!!

  • Joan crawford greatest celeb

  • other actress if u coud call them it ritas ginger rogers who ar they can FUC OFF Joan crawfords the gretest celeb FUC the others ar fucrs lol

  • @hoi2000d the correct spelling is fuck, moron

  • It wouldve been great if Joan was in Hush,Hush Sweet Charlotte.

  • Hard to believe his icon was barely five foot, as was Bette Davis and Judy was 4 11. They live more big and grand than any celebrity or actress of today can hope to achieve.

Love how devoted Joan is in these makeup tests. A pro!

  • Joan Crawford was barely five foot?! Is that really true?! How fantastic, that gives me at five foot one some hope!

  • This is fascinating stuff. Real insight. Thanks for posting.

Yes, well maybe she shouldn't have done the horror stuff in the 60s..BUT we who are her fans love her when she is serious and when she is campy. She's obviously having a good time here.

Too bad she didn't finish "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" but Olivia DeHavilland is stellar in that role!

  • well this was done in 63 and she was born in around 1905 -07 id say she looks pretty damn good for a woman of her age...

  • Hell yeah

  • wow she was a short woman! I also think its terrible they put your age on the clapboard. What difference does it make?

  • It's not the age of Joan. It's the age of the character, Lucy, that she's made up for.

Her character plays a part where she's 49.. and at the beginning, she's supposed to be 20 years younger.

  • wow ! i loved when she tore off the lashes....

  • There's no way she could have passed for 29.

  • THE MUSIC IS JUST TERRIFIC

  • i love it too..i live the creepyness of the strings.

  • This is great--thanks for posting. Joan looks better in these tests than in the movie. And what a pro she was! She took on the proper personality trait for each costume. She was one of a kind and still so fascinating to watch do anything.

  • Joan Crawford sure looks cute with bangs :)

  • She lived, breathed, saturated, engulfed, soaked every little drop of her fame. You gotta love her for it! It takes a hell of alot of gusto to pull it off and ahe did it brilliantly

  • that's great! i personally think the Lucy 49 look suited her visual appearance completely. She looked 49, she was 60.. wow.

  • Wow. never seen anthing like this...

    speachless.

ya right me? No way, Bravo Joan. You were somthing , on of a kind.

    Thanks for the post Mate!

  • This is so wonderful, it gives us a little insight into the working of Joan's mind. Stunning stuff...if I want to cheer myself up, I watch this...or read her book 'My Way Of Life', a camp classic. Hey come vist my totally Joan channel. Robbie.

  • Joan was never one of my favourites but she was good,it was her idea to have bushy eyebrows, she wanted to be different. They were her trademark.I always preferred Bette though :)

  • Joan Crawford was 59 when she made this film. She was supposed to be 29 when they did the flashback. There wasn't enough makeup in Hollywood to make her look 29.

  • No, but then she didn't look 59 either.

    Looks around late 30's.

  • She seems so nice when you can't hear what she's saying!

  • OMG THAT TINY BODY and that huge face - Joan was so different by 1964 and here she looks happy when she acted she never looked anything other than tense,

  • If they would not have done her eyebrows so dark they probably could've gotten her to look younger for 29.

  • Joan's part was originally going to be played by Joan Blondel . . . Glad Joan went for this "cult classic" . . . It shows Joan's over the top performance . . . Kinda' Mildered Pierce meets Blanche Hudson!

  • Joan Blondell was fabulous, she was once Warners biggest star...she would have done a great job also...

  • I love 2.09 when she rips off her fake eyelashes and flings them on the ground.

  • Just mesmerizing to watch! Fabulous!

  • wonkaboy57, I can't take my eyes off her.

  • the definition of star quality-something powerful and luminous from deep inside

  • This is just fabulous footage to see, and you wonder how such a strong woman could be intimidated by Lucille Ball on her show not much later. Joan was the perfect star, and is always thoroughly watchable like all the greats. Hey visit my channel for some great stuff.

  • wow! what fantastic clips-thanx so much for posting!

  • I swear she invented drag

  • 49?? more like 56!

  • i loved that movie. she is so convincing and as for her eyebrows i LOVE them on her. it wouldnt be right if she didnt have them

  • I find this kind of sad in a way. Appearing in B-movies like this affected what would of been a long top notch career. Imagine Garbo appearing in stuff like this, that mystic we have of her today would be gone. Joan should of given up acting and gone out gracefully once she left Warner Bros. in the mid 50s. Everything she made after that with the exception of Baby Jane, was pretty bad, all B-movies. She was a great actress and this was beneath her. Sorry, that's how I feel.

  • I know what you mean, but the actors did not get paid well back in the old days. It makes no sense to stop working just because you don't get the script that you love.

  • Actually Joan was the highest paid women in America at one point. She just liked to spend money. Again I hate to bring up Garbo because they were both so different, but Garbo retired in 1941 and never made another movie but was worth over 50 millions dollars when she died. Garbo invested her money Joan spent it. Joan was worth less then 2 million when she died. Joan just wasn't smart with money and she paid the price, forcing her to make stuff like this in her old age.

  • omg!

  • Oh come on - I was only joking around. I like Joan a lot really. ;-)

  • i know! what i was trying to say is that i was like omg! rofl! at your comment! not like omg! how could you say such a thing to such a wonderful lady!i

  • Those eyebrows and the Max Factor lipstick smear were all part of her image. However, if you look at some of her silent era as well as here early-mid 30s, she didn't have that smeared Max Factor lipstick at first because in reality, Joan has no lips. So MGM decided to create the lipstick effect supplied by Max Factor which made her one of the iconic images of Hollywood in the late 30s and mid-40s. Another Max Factor trademark is Lucille Ball's eyebrows, which are stenciled by Max Factor.

  • Interesting to see her without an Adrain or Travis Banton Gown, she looks much shorter or maybe it's her age...she looks amazing none the less

  • you say that like it's a bad thing

  • @shealways you are??

  • That was her trademark!

  • she must be 60 or 65 here.

but she has the body of a 40 year old..and the face of a 38 year old!

    she aged very well.

but with all the million's she had in the bank.she could not get her eye brow's waxed? really:]

    but we love you joan<3

  • I acnt watch her in her latter films she scares me I think it was her EyeBrows LOL

  • she has eye brows like a man

  • Man, they just don't make 'em like this anymore. She's really acting throughout this entire mundane hair/wardrobe test. She just can't help but be the ultimate professional; what an actress!

  • Fascinating. But this was not a screen test as normally understood. Crawford obviously had the job and the film wouldn't have existed without her. This was more like an adjunct to storyboards; testing costumes, makeup etc. in advance of actual shooting. Normal procedure for any film. Although I must confess when she bent down to pick up dog I first thought she was checking for dust under the furnature.

  • hahaah

  • As Lucy Marlowe just out of hospital she resumes her look of 20 years before, a sort of 40's film noir harridan gone to seed, just out of an asylum for the criminally insane. She'd caught her husband in bed with another woman so hacked them up with an axe. This is exciting stuff to see, Joan is wonderful, high camp and over the top. You have it all here, the Joan of then trying to look like the Joan of the 40's, the swagger, the confidence, the hair. The knitting & poodle are the real Joan!

  • I LOVED Strait0Jacket,especially the ending!

  • 29? You've got to be kidding. Why she doesn't look a day over sweet sixteen.

  • I remember her playing a 25 year old housewife on "Secret Storm" in the 60`s. Joan was then in her 60`s and filling in for her sick daughter. I wish someone had that footage but I don`t think it was recorded. She is at her all time worst-obviously drunk and reading off cue cards

  • Poor Joan!
