If he likes to buy and hold he should invest in long term bonds but with long term bonds the par value of the stock is at risk if the interest rate changes. Just depends on what company you go with. Yeah I know a little something as well but I can't see myself constantly watching stock lol not worth my time although the money can be good.....eh I'll pass.
