Bret is right about the wrestling quality in WWF vs. WCW. WCW then was promoting more of the show/glitz/fireworks aspect, while WWF was more "pure"... although it was still very silly at times. Which is more entertaining; pure pro wrestling, or the show that was WCW? I watched both, and found the segments in WCW very entertaining. I wasn't the only one.
@Firebomber7 I totally agree, but I also thought the lighter classes (is that what it's called?) wrestling in WCW was fantastic. Dean Malenko, Benoit, Jericho, some of the lucha guys.
It's because a lot of fans were just burnt out on WWF at the time. Even Filet Mignon gets tiresome when you eat it every night for years. WCW was junk food. Satisfied our desire for something different and less polished for a while. You have to remember that by 1997, WWF had been the preeminent pro wrestling Fed for 10+ years.
WCW was better actually. WWF was forced to be the best it will ever be because of it. The NWO gimmick was fine for a year and then it soured, yet they still clung to it. Constant shenanigans with the WCW titles and a mistreatment of their hugest star, Mr Goldberg.
wcw had a better whole product. the many different styles of wrestling. hulk hogan as an incredibly entertaining heel. the goldberg stuff. kevin nash just saying what ever the hell he wanted. the whole thing was just entertaining.
@chunky9791 Do you know WHY Bret ran for the $7 million?? Because Vince McMahon wanted out of his contract. He turned down the WCW offer for the WWF offer which was much less money, but since he was loyal, he signed it. Then, Vince decided he wanted out of the deal and asked Bret to take the WCW deal. I can't believe you don't know this. You live in a cave in the 90's??
He's right about the top end of WCW (Hogan, Goldberg, Sting, Nash) but the midcard of WCW blew WWFs away for a while there. Cruiserweight matches every week and guys like Raven, Benoit, and Jericho who should've been the future based on their matches/promos.
Altogether, WCW was the better product at that exact time (1997) and the NWO angle was compelling when it first started (but should've been sidelined/diminished within a few years).
@korovievice Yeah, nitro was entertaining for the entire show. The japanese and mexican wrestlers who wrestled for the first part of the show before the Jerichos, Guerreros and Benoits wrestled in the second hour also were very entertaining. WWE at the time just had a higher quality production and I think if WWE spent some money on their sets, stages and tv production they could have won the thing. Getting Russo was the end for WCW.
Then Bret, you should have STAYED IN YOUR SANDBOX where YOU were allowed to be the King, but WE DIDN'T WANT YOU AT WCW! THAT WAS BISCHOFF'S MISTAKE IN BRINGING YOU HERE! GOLDBERG SHOWED YOU How we ALL FELT about you! He kicked your HEAD OFF. And you went around cryimg that Goldberg kicked you and caused you to have a stroke, so you could'nt get it up anymore and your left nut hurt and all THAT BULLSHIT! WCW WERE MEN! You were OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE! So CRY TO SOMEONE WHO CARES! LIKE VINCE MACMAGGOT!
@superabel Jericho didn't kick Goldbergs ass. Even Lance storm said Jericho took Bill down and face locked him. That's hardly an ass kicking. He restrained Goldberg.
@YungBaseChris It proves though that Jericho likely could have beat Goldberg in a fight, at least in my opinion. He was faster, a better technical wrestler, and had far more stamina. So long as he could prevent Goldberg from hitting him, Jericho would likely win.
@YungBaseChris yeah he chocked him out and then he let him go. then while he was doing he yelled out "I'M KING OF THE WORLD." oh and he invented Canada.
@enterthesleep Only for that year though. Individual match quality was probably better at WWE from time to time, at least better in the main event anyway, but WCW was just way more interesting. Things started going downhill fast though in 1997, and I still maintain the Hogan Sting match that was an abomination is what started the toilet flushing at WCW. Bret won't admit that because he seems to think he and he alone was the greatest thing in the history of wrestling bar none.
WCW was alot better around 1996-1997 and you could even argue 1995. WWF was a LOT better from around mid-1998 and on (that being said I'd take even latter era WCW over WWE today).
@TheEurythmicsFan Like he had a choice, it was either that or make NO Money, instead of, you know assuming like hell (And this is coming from a WCW fan.) Look up HOW and WHY, he had to sign with WCW in the First place.
Brett you are full of it WWE at the time was losing because it was boring and the same crap over and over. when WCW you never know what will happen which make it fun to watch.
Bret wonders why WCW was better? Well him, The Taker and HBK all suck and are super oversaturated. Michaels was done once he lost his smile and Bret was never good with the mic. WCW/nWo were entertaining and bad ass. He was part of the reason for the demise when he brought his ass there...
@tgan71 I disagree. People watched WCW because they still wanted to see Hogan, Macho Man, Flair, Hall, Nash, Luger, Syxx, Piper, The Giant, Goldberg, and await Sting. And thats not even going towards the midcarders that were pheonomenal wrestlers like Beniot, Malenko, Jericho, and even DDP. If you wanted wrestling you had it and if you wanted the "names" that made wrestling you had that too, albeit not in their prime. WWF was top heavy. HBK and Taker, though, were not oversaturated.
@1932Brownies I agree with you. Also, IMO, WCW had better angles at that time, and more wrestling. During 96-97, every time I switched the channel to give WWF a chance, it was a buncha women ripping their tops off. Now I like tits and ass as much as the next guy, but if I want to see that, I turn to the internet. I tuned in for wrestling matches.
Anyway, WCW did turn into crap after a couple of years anyway. I started getting bored of it around wolfpack days.
@N0GGINB0NKER Exactly. Personally the company just had to many people calling the shots. As great as the NWO was, it was only going to work for so long. I loved the angles they "tried" in the WWF. However, there was just way to much inner turmoil going with the wrestlers and the desire to do anything to win back ratings.
@tgan71 Michaels and Taker were all by themselves in 96 when Bret was taking his TV break and HHH, The Rock, Foley, and even Steve were all either no names or just getting their foot in the door. I believe the WWF definitely put on the better main event matches, but the longevity wasn't there. I could watch HBK vs. Bret over and over again. However, it didnt happen. I could say the same for Taker vs. Bret or HBK. but again only happened once. Raw was still a very thin show.
wcw had great talent. they just didnt use em. they kept the same ol assholes onto top all the time. go look at WCW uncensored 1999. the first match was mikey whipwrecks debut there against billy kidman and it was the best match on the whole card. and they never really used mikey after that just on mid and lower billing
@irelandcool1 Whats wrong with you? seriously, the guy gets where he's from wrong and you call him an idiot? you know whats ironic? calling someone an idiot for a mistake IS an idiotic thing too do, it just means YOU'RE the idiot!
@peoplebiter just to let you know the "his from winnipeg you idiot" was a quote from survivor series that jericho did to a fan that said "Go back to toronto" its been used a as a joke ever since then
@1Rozilbi I can tell you don't know your wrestling history for starters, Stone Cold started in Wcw, Chris jericho started in wcw, triple h started in wcw, mick foley started in wcw the undertaker started in wcw before they was known in wwe so what the hell you talking about, some of the same guys was in ecw so its the other way around.
@kenrickeason Jerhico started in Canada went to Mexico, worked in Japan and Germany went to ECW, then to WCW then to WWE. Stone Cold started in the WCCW went to USWA THEN to WCW, ECW and WWF. Triple H didnt start his career in WCW, neither did Mick Foley or the Undertaker. Many of 'em started in Smokey Mountain, USWA and WCCW. Not to mention the countless other indy promotions out there. Hell, you probably dont remember when D.D.P managed Scotty Flamingo.
@linus614 undertaker was in WCW as "Mean Mark Callous". So was Mick Foley, I remember seeing him in a shit ton of indys and nwa during the 80s. Hell he's been around forever it seems like, yet as soon as he entered WWF, they acted like his career started there as mankind.
Come on bret I love you as a wrestler but come on real talk wcw had alot of talent and most of there shows were great wcw made mistakes but they wasn't trash.
@kenrickeason I disagree. The talent was on the under cards, the first hour of Nitro was all the WCW I could watch. Now if we go back and talk about WCW when it was still attatched with the NWA then yeah you would be right. I remember when WCW had a deal with NJPW and they carried a VS. ppv, now that was a card. But the WCW Bret is talking about was just a watered down USWA.
@Ashiwel27 Correct!! A biz going to have bad times everybody does but a biz find ways to come back eric and ted turner had the mind to have to make it big but didn't have the mind to pull them self out of stuff you know what I'm saying, vince mcmahon done lost money in his biz , roids scandals, sexual charges, a lost of attendants and still stuck with it made him the biggest wrestling promoter on earth them guys at wcw didn't get half of these problems and still fail.
WCW died because they relied on has beens to sell their product. All the stars they had were former WWE wrestlers apart fro Goldberg. Great businesses generally do not go out of business. Says it all really
Bret doesn't understand that a lot of people think watching Scott Hall drink a beer is more exciting then watching Bret "wrestle". WCW was epic from 96-98 I can't stand the jealousy of that era some of these guys have. Bret you are one thing, the biggest Free Agent bust in wrestling history (could people have cared less about you in WCW? I don't think so).
Here is what Bret doesn't understand: It was Hogan being a heel and being the best there is was and ever will be at it. He may be right that it was garbage, but what he isn't right about is the fact that the talent that came from WcW is all over the place now in the WWE. Guys like Jericho, Mysterio, the Big Show, Booker T, Eddie Guerro, the list is endless as to the amount of great wrestlers that came over to the WWE and made the WWE better than what it was.
@mgs19901 dont forget kurt angle and john cena battle raps. remember kurt angle bringing the truck of milk, stone cold fucking up vinces red corvette with cement mix that was spontaneous.
actually i liked WCW beacause some of the wrestler that where there : like Raven, DDP, Sting (the old Sting and not that crap that offer us TNA), Macho Man, JJ (SLAP NUTS ! XD), Kevin Nash (when he wasn't an old pile of shit), Scott Hall, Rey Mysterio Jr (i liked him in WCW), Eddie Guerrero (R.I.P), Vampiro, Jericho, Goldberg
Yes, looking back I did enjoy WCW during their big ratings phase, but moved to WWF with Rock and Stone Cold. I was surprised how much they did with Stone Cold, using beer trucks, monster trucks.
Bret was screwed, because of Medusa. Vince also has a quirk. At that time, he seemed to like wrestlers to loose their belts in their home state, or even city. So on one hand Bret was willing to drop the belt to Shawn, but just not in Canada. Vince didn't want to chance Bret leaving with the belt, and showing up on WCW to toss in it a trash can. So they came up with the screw job. Because Vince simply didn't want to trust Bret. Bret knew dropping the belt in Canada would be a mistake. It was.
It was garbage when he entered it. Look at the ratings it was starting to go down once he entered. And he was always one of my favorites but facts are facts.
WWF in 97 vs WCW in 97, WWF was better. Bret's heel turn, real shades of grey, the US vs Hart Foundation, the birth of DX, the early start of the Attitude era. Austin vs Bret, Bret vs Shawn, Bret vs Taker, Austin vs Shawn. Mankind vs Taker, that was an amazing year for them and they should have overtaken WCW that year.
@Aggie1985 Well, I'll be the first person to admit that the numbers do not lie. Financially and ratings-wise, WCW was superior. However, I do believe that the impact WWF was making during this time was undeniably superior to that of WCW and it became appearant over time. Exodus to 1998, it took some time for people to realize that WWF was where it's at.
It's hard to stay fans of wrestling because you subconsciously know that it all scripted. I use to love wrestling until I was around 15-16 but went off it after that.
I have to disagree in a way with what Bret said. Yes, WWF may have been the better "Wrestling" product, but WCW obviously had something different that appealed to people more than wrestling did for them to be as successful as they were.
@luckyxstar7 But Brett always was first and foremost a wrestler, it's the in-ring performances that he would have been paying attention to and the quality or lack there of.
whats he on about the nwo was the best faction ever and wcw had goldberg over 100 matches unbeaten and wcw had sting ddp scott steiner hulk hogan macho man randy savage ric flair etc wwf was awesome at the same time because the attitude era was the best era in wwe/f ever but i couldnt rate one company better than the other because of the legends in both companies
There's No Way in Hell Bret Hart could've been the highest paid wreslter ever. Maybe at the time, but NOT Ever. The highest paid wrestler ever is no doubt either Rock or Austin.
he says they only did 25% of the survivor series match but in his old documentary he says the sharpshooter reversal spot was supposed to cause dx to run in and end the match
i do have to say WCW was a quality show from start to end. WWF was all about the Main event. WCW main events couldnt hold a candle to WWFs main events. you have old Hogan vs old Piper on wcw and stone cold vs undertaker on wwf. i used to switch between shows & watched who ever had the better match on.
@fosambean i know, and wats realy anoying is natalya is a grear wrestlers and there making her fart, last night she was doing the sharp shooter and then she farted so the ref didn't pay attention to the match when she was suppose to win
To be honest I liked them both. I like WCW because it had some of my favouirte wrestlers Nash, Hall, Sting, Y2J, Konan and Goldberg. I like WWF for Austin, Kurt Angle, Steve Blackman, APA, Kane, Undertaker. So I didn't care about the ratings. To me now WWE can put out any old crap (Fart gimmick) And we have to watch it cause the only other option is TNA and ROH which don't have the big production so they arnt big enough competition. At least when WCW was around WWE tried harder.
Wcw was trash lik every main event ended in a dq or sum wild bullshit by halfway of 98' it became garbage 96-mid 98 were da wcw "good" years but dat was it .. It was short lived.. Ddp sting n flair kept it alive fo a lil longer cuz hogan nash russo bischoff were taking a constant dump on it n well goldberg story was retarded had he had sum mic skills ppl would still chat goldberg but his run got boring FAST he was essentially a fail in da wwe wen he came

If WCW disappeared it was because of management issues because their programation was awesome and they forced the WWF/E to give us quality programming(Attitude Era). You are garbage Breat Hart i hope you die soon.
You call the wcw garbage? After they opened the doors to you when the WWE screwed your carrier? And what about all those promos you used to cut in WCW craying and moaning like a fucking pussy about how WWF screwed you and how grateful you was to WCW on how they opened the doors to you?...Garbage is the way the WWE has treated your family.Don't you remember what happened to Owen Hart?,what do you have to say about Natalya Hart's farting angle?Fuck you and your fucking family you SON OF A BITCH!!!
@Thumbsdb ...You DO know he was screwed over BECAUSE he was going to WCW, right? Please tell me you knew that much before going off about how WCW "opened their doors" to him. They opened their wallets, Bret did what he felt he had to because WWE could not afford to pay him properly and because he didn't want to job the title to Shawn, at least in Canada, and do business what would be considered the right way Vince made sure he wasn't going to appear on WCW with their championship title.
@IAmTheMikko Ok,you're right,i knew he was going to WCW and he got screwed mostly because of that(my fanatism went to far at my previous comment lol). However i find it disrespectful when he says WCW was “garbage“(scripted or not),because it wasn't.If so,then why that “garbage“ forced the WWF to give us quality programming, aka Attitude era?,If WCW went bankrupt, it was because of managment issues, not because of the wrestlers, the storylines, the gimmicks whatsoever.
@Thumbsdb UMadBro? First of all Bret was going to WCW even if he didn't get screwed. The company knew and he made a deal with Vince that he'd win in Canada and drop the belt to Shawn the next night. So that's complete bullshit, even so, what kind of moron would say no to having Bret fucking Hart join them? WCW was garbage , get it over it. We're talking about a company who gave the world title to David Arquette and did a fued between Chucky & Rick Steiner....
@StraightEdgeStunner Yeah! That STUPID WEE-WEE CRAP VINCE pulled"Kiss my ass" club WAS DUMB! When VICE BARED HIS ASS, you COULDN'T TELL WHICH WAS HIS FACE AND WHICH WA HIS ASS, they LOOK SO MUCH ALIKE!
@Thumbsdb WCW didn't "open its doors" --- Bret was the hottest commodity on the market at the time so obviously getting him on their roster was a huge coup for WCW. If not for how badly WCW wanted Bret, then Vince wouldnt have been worried about Bret leaving WWF with the blt, and thus the screw job would never have happened.
@Thumbsdb I LOVED that "garbage" where Goldberg KICKED YOUR HEAD OFF, BRETT, and sent it rolling down main street! You walked around in a DAZE for 2 years, cyring because you had just been DETHRONED AS "THE BEST THERE EVER IS, THE BEST THERE EVER WAS, and THE BEST THERE EVER WILL BE! So NOW WHO WAS THE BEST, BRETT?? GOLDBERG KICKED THE HELL OUT OF YOU! I WAS REALLY GLAD to see THAT! I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY WCW BROUGHT YOU to them when they ALREADY HAD THE BEST TALENT! NEVER LIKE YOU !
@alexp8654 Actually that wasn't what happened but lot's of people try to go back to that. He had suffered multiple concussions that week before that match even took place. Also it wasn't the kick that was the final nail, it was the figure 4 on the turnbuckle where Goldberg did not take the move correctly causing Hart to smack his head on the floor. illustrating why Gold berg is one of the most overrated wrestlers of all time, The guy was not unbeatable WCW just made him out to be...
WCW was waaay entertaining in my mind from 1996-late 1998 even more so that the WWE at that point (1996-1997) Before the "Stone Cold" gimmick WWE was just plain dull after Wrestlemania XII, I was pro WCW for a reason, & the matches on Nitro & on Thunder were better even though I didn't even watch WWE's programming, Raw, Shotgun Saturday Night, Livewire, you name it, WCW was just plain better until late 1998 after the CATASTROPHIC "Poke of doom".
@mattyhasselhoff everything got worse with the title changes between 1999 and 2000, and having the stupid reformations of the nwo. You can tell the crowd that give a crap of the nwo reuniting.
@MyAron5 the wolfpack was not that bad, but everyother reformation, like LWO, NWO JAPAN, and NWO 2000, they were crap, and the stupid billionares club and the new blood was pretty much a desperate attempt to push the wrestlers, when the monday night wars pretty much over in 2000.
What happened was the commentators was running their mouth at WCW about WWE when WWE didn't say nothing. So their words came in bit them in the ass when Vince bought them. That's what they for talking trash. And low and behold they all try to run to WWE. Wow.
its too WWE was good back then now its so boring I cant even call it Wrestling or just Drama TV

I think the WWF/E staff pay those wrestlers a large amount of money to talk bad about WCW.
dirty706 2 weeks ago
Bret wonders why WCW was better? Well him, The Taker and HBK all suck and are super oversaturated. Michaels was done once he lost his smile and Bret was never good with the mic. WCW/nWo were entertaining and bad ass. He was part of the reason for the demise when he brought his ass there...
tgan71 2 weeks ago
@tgan71 I disagree. People watched WCW because they still wanted to see Hogan, Macho Man, Flair, Hall, Nash, Luger, Syxx, Piper, The Giant, Goldberg, and await Sting. And thats not even going towards the midcarders that were pheonomenal wrestlers like Beniot, Malenko, Jericho, and even DDP. If you wanted wrestling you had it and if you wanted the "names" that made wrestling you had that too, albeit not in their prime. WWF was top heavy. HBK and Taker, though, were not oversaturated.
1932Brownies 2 weeks ago
@1932Brownies I agree with you. Also, IMO, WCW had better angles at that time, and more wrestling. During 96-97, every time I switched the channel to give WWF a chance, it was a buncha women ripping their tops off. Now I like tits and ass as much as the next guy, but if I want to see that, I turn to the internet. I tuned in for wrestling matches.
Anyway, WCW did turn into crap after a couple of years anyway. I started getting bored of it around wolfpack days.
N0GGINB0NKER 2 weeks ago
@N0GGINB0NKER Exactly. Personally the company just had to many people calling the shots. As great as the NWO was, it was only going to work for so long. I loved the angles they "tried" in the WWF. However, there was just way to much inner turmoil going with the wrestlers and the desire to do anything to win back ratings.
1932Brownies 2 weeks ago
@tgan71 Michaels and Taker were all by themselves in 96 when Bret was taking his TV break and HHH, The Rock, Foley, and even Steve were all either no names or just getting their foot in the door. I believe the WWF definitely put on the better main event matches, but the longevity wasn't there. I could watch HBK vs. Bret over and over again. However, it didnt happen. I could say the same for Taker vs. Bret or HBK. but again only happened once. Raw was still a very thin show.
1932Brownies 2 weeks ago
If you want to see a modern version of WCW watch TNA...it's the same old crap.

wcw had great talent. they just didnt use em. they kept the same ol assholes onto top all the time. go look at WCW uncensored 1999. the first match was mikey whipwrecks debut there against billy kidman and it was the best match on the whole card. and they never really used mikey after that just on mid and lower billing

@1Rozilbi I can tell you don't know your wrestling history for starters, Stone Cold started in Wcw, Chris jericho started in wcw, triple h started in wcw, mick foley started in wcw the undertaker started in wcw before they was known in wwe so what the hell you talking about, some of the same guys was in ecw so its the other way around.
kenrickeason 3 weeks ago
@kenrickeason Yup Undertaker was the punisher but then changed to mean mark
Theawsomenath 3 weeks ago
@kenrickeason Jerhico started in Canada went to Mexico, worked in Japan and Germany went to ECW, then to WCW then to WWE. Stone Cold started in the WCCW went to USWA THEN to WCW, ECW and WWF. Triple H didnt start his career in WCW, neither did Mick Foley or the Undertaker. Many of 'em started in Smokey Mountain, USWA and WCCW. Not to mention the countless other indy promotions out there. Hell, you probably dont remember when D.D.P managed Scotty Flamingo.
linus614 2 weeks ago
@linus614 undertaker was in WCW as "Mean Mark Callous". So was Mick Foley, I remember seeing him in a shit ton of indys and nwa during the 80s. Hell he's been around forever it seems like, yet as soon as he entered WWF, they acted like his career started there as mankind.

1Rozilbi 3 weeks ago

Number1StarSB 3 weeks ago
Here is what Bret doesn't understand: It was Hogan being a heel and being the best there is was and ever will be at it. He may be right that it was garbage, but what he isn't right about is the fact that the talent that came from WcW is all over the place now in the WWE. Guys like Jericho, Mysterio, the Big Show, Booker T, Eddie Guerro, the list is endless as to the amount of great wrestlers that came over to the WWE and made the WWE better than what it was.

It was.

Aggie1985 3 weeks ago 11
@Aggie1985 Well, I'll be the first person to admit that the numbers do not lie. Financially and ratings-wise, WCW was superior. However, I do believe that the impact WWF was making during this time was undeniably superior to that of WCW and it became appearant over time. Exodus to 1998, it took some time for people to realize that WWF was where it's at.

IAmTheMikko 3 weeks ago
@IAmTheMikko Ok,you're right,i knew he was going to WCW and he got screwed mostly because of that(my fanatism went to far at my previous comment lol). However i find it disrespectful when he says WCW was “garbage“(scripted or not),because it wasn't.If so,then why that “garbage“ forced the WWF to give us quality programming, aka Attitude era?,If WCW went bankrupt, it was because of managment issues, not because of the wrestlers, the storylines, the gimmicks whatsoever.
