Yep they will grow here, brought some seeds back from US. They're like small Lupins. Not to detract from KR's great version of this song.................
@lurgainn , Wow, good for you for getting them up from seeds! I tried for years to grow them from seeds and I live in Texas. Finally established some in my yard using plants I bought at a feed store. They are lupins and we saw plenty of those in Scotland and England so there's no reason they shouldn't grow there for you. Congratulations!
I love Kates Our Town cover and this is is great - maybe a Kate cover album of US country would be good - I love this rendition and Kate's Our Town cover.
Wow....superb version...the sentiment behind the song...everything...beautifully sung...left simple..Nancy Griffith and Kate Rusby ...what a pair of songwriter/singers they are !!xxx
This is from a collaboration album called 'Intuition'. It features many fine female artists: Kathleen Deighton, Rosalie Deighton, Julie Matthews, Kathryn Roberts and Pat Shaw.
This album also contains the almost completely a-capella song 'Hunting the Hare'.
It is not one man nor a million, but the spirit of liberty that must be preserved. The waves which dash upon the shore are, one by one, broken, but the ocean conquers nevertheless. It overwhelms the Armada, it wears out the rock. In like manner, whatever the struggle of individuals, the great cause will gather strength.
@stevetrellis could it be anyone else? Her voice is amazingly distinctive because of her beautiful Barnsley accent :) As has been said though, this is from her early days when she was younger and sang a wee bit higher than she does now.
@SlothCalledSid I believe this was from the early 90's, from when she was duetting with Kathryn Roberts, so she would have been much younger. Probably early 20's? It is, indeed, beautiful. But then, Kate could sing the phone book and it would be beautiful. :D
This little tune was written by Nanci Griffith in the 80's most of her song's went unrecognized until someone major sang one of her tunes like, Love at the five and dime and Outbound plane...
It seems to come from a Fish Records cd called 'Intuition' (1993) featuring Kathryn Roberts and Kate Rusby among others. Kate Rusby covers a Nanci Griffiths song, presumably 'GCH", and a Mary Chapin-Carpenter song.
My God Rusby08...you have made my Saturday finding this , thank you for posting .I have been a Nanci fan a long time, but I have to tell you I like this version better. I am 80 miles from the Gulf , to have Kate, the song and the ocean crossed in me is wonderful
@lee5371918 I grew up on the Gulf Coast, Highway 90 runs thru my hometown, and my gran used to have a rice farm. First time I heard Kate sing this cover I was hooked! Seemed like she was talking to me.

Her voice seems to be a little different here, as if she'd sung it when she was younger. Did she?
Beautiful :)

@SlothCalledSid A big part of the difference is that she's singing about a fourth higher than we're used to hearing her.....
