....on down to the FEMA camp. Where y'all eat... each other. HAHAH, that's funny! Great video, I used to get hard tack at Civil War reinactments here in Ohio. I'd gnaw on it with some black coffee for hours. Great work!
The fork holes serve a duel function like in short bread. They allow more moisture too escape, making it dryer and if put them in rows you can break it easier without scoring it. I prefer a nice bannock for breakfast and take what is left along to nibble on. Just saying... ;-JJD
GREAT SHOW! I ALWAYS WONDERED HOW HARDTACK WAS MADE. READ ABOUT IT A LOT IN WESTERNS. I RECALL THE SOLDIERS WOULD FRY THEIR BACON OR FATBACK AND THEN SOAK THE HARDTACK IN THE GREASE TO SOFTEN IT AND GIVE IT SOME FLAVOR. THANKS DAVID FOR YOUR HELP. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS.
Hard Tack was not normally eaten in travel form what the troops would do is use them for breakfasts and mash them up with some water and powdered milk and make a regular type biscuit over the camp fire with some bacon fat mmm good eaten.
Give them hat with a cup of water!! Watch them have Bowel lockup!! Good vid but I value taking a health crap too much to eat that. Maybe in a SHTF FEMA camp you could turn them into a weapon somehow! Maybe club the jailer with it!
no offence but you really remind me of my dad which is a really good thing He raised me when I was growing up and is probably the biggest hillbilly ever lol. But he's got a great heart and you have an accent just like him.
I wonder if these would be any easier to eat if they were formed in a tortilla press. I tried to make these a while back but didn't have a rolling pin so they couldn't get hard in the middle. They sucked pretty bad but I still ate them in soup.
The point of hard tack is the carbs and the ability to travel and ship well.If you had crackers or biscuits they would break up or mush up.Also hard tack lasts for ever!Doesnt get moldy .And the troops used to soak it in coffee to eat.
Dasarti1, The FEMA cookie comment is sadly a very possible real world scenario. I live in a big city and I am not going to bug out. If things fall apart, I will move to another house that is safer. I intend to help by feeding people as I can that are in need and hardtack will be a staple as well as bread to give out. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work. Blessings, Preacher
So this is where Tolkien got his idea for lembas bread.....hard tack.
This stuff would be sufficient for long journeys maybe not to a fema camp though, trading, hunting (both animal and criminals) I like the idea of the extra protein, one addition a multivitamin for long tern use may work well.
Also make sure you roll them out thin, at least 1/4 to 1/8th inch thick, use fork for holes to let steam out, and use knife or pizza cutter to cut into grahm cracker size.
I have made hardtack this last year, several batches and then I sealed them in smaller mylar bags with oxygen absorbers (hand Warmers) (thanks for the tip by the way). I found it to be not bad to eat, I found several recipes online and used one of them when I made it. I made approximately 25lbs and stored it. The recipe I used was 2 cups of flour,1/4 tsp salt, and several Tbs of H20 until a good consistency was formed. Bake@350 for 30min, 250 for 30 min, 200 for a final 30 min, roll out thin
I personally cannot eat raw hard tac, if I did, my teeth would fly out all over the place like someone hitting a beer bottle with a sledge hammer. I HAVE to stew it or suck on it for a long time. Personally, I don't plan on using hard tac unless it's dire, and by then I probably won't have wheat grain anyway. Hard tac isn't really survival food, more like travel food. A lot of nutrition in a dense long lasting cracker. And it's useful as an improvised weapon, you can knap it just like flint ;p
Dsarti1, or anyone else, how long would this type of hard tack last? If I had a grab bag for an emergency situation, could I make this hard tack today, ziplock it and throw it in my grab bag, and eat it years later?
@koolman280 Probably not the one with egg in it. The egg yolk has a lot of fat in it and it may go rancid. The other hardtack will last for a few years, depending on storage. Sitting in a car or something like that will not do it any good.
@lunarrn Baking would probably kill off most of the vitamins. It would be better to just take the vitamin seperately, with a meal with some fat in it for better absorption.
toast the wheat and corn then grind it into a powder. Mix it with water and honey (almonds if you have any), shape the mix into a roll, cut into slices and eat.
No cooking required (except for toasting the grains but you can do that pre-SHTF).
While in high school and taking an american history class we discussed this same thing. Our teacher had 2 or 3 different recipies for hard tack. It was all of different consistencies. Pretty good stuff. I like the idea!
Thanks for the video! I think I will go with the original recipe without the egg for the longer shelf life. (When I fire up the wood oven I'm going to cook as much as I can jam in there.) Happy New Year Bro!! Keep the videos coming...FEMA crackers...hilarious!
PS
My effective bow range is under 50 yds..NY dude must have added an extra ZERO to 30!
Hysterical. I think I'll try it. Before my march to the fema camp, that is. Also, I second the motion to not cook the vitamin C. Thanks again for another great vid
or you could go the extra mile and use a cooky cutter and make these nasty biscuts into bite sized edibles. I personally wouldnt bother eating these nasty biscuits when i know how to cook better. Being a survivalist doesnt mean you need to frickin eat bugs or survive eating garbage. Hardtack is just a biscuit without yeast and any herbs that would make it taste good.
i gotta admit, im not in the central lying states im in NY in the adirondacks, with the huge population of deer, black bear, coyote, rabbit, squirrel and other critters, i think we could possibly live off meat. i am very proficient with a bow up to 300 yds and my rifles 600+ yds. not to mention knowing how to fashion a fishing pole and net out of just about anything. hardtack is good to a point, but without proper dental care one will eventually lose his teeth within a couple years and suffer
@dsarti1 prolly meant feet dave.....or he is just a wannebe redneck that hasnt ever shot either. even that is a strentch for most people who havent shot much in their life.
@dsarti1 yeah the 300 yd shot was not supposed to be a 3 i am just like normal people who sometimes make a typo it was supposed to be 200 not 300, and just an FYI i have hit targets at 300 with a decent amount of penetration but they ARE stationary targets. i have never made a kill shot with my bow over 100 yds. my point was simply that this type of preparation is good for your area. but someone in my area could live off the land with out much problem as we mountain boys know how to survive!
@bcott28 and i never said that i made any of these shots in the woods, nor did i say i made them on an animal, i was simply stating that i am able to make the shots. longest kill shot with my bow was around 100 yds, longest kill shot with my rifle was just around 450 yds. longest kill shot with just rifle sights was around 250 yds. i will get some rounds and lay out some targets at 4 5 and 600 yds and make a video of me grouping 3 or 4 rounds in a 2 inch square if ya like.
@robdux 300 yard shot with a bow? In the WROL you could survive by selling your bullshit to people for fertilizer for their gardens. Dave is wrong, you are not smokin weed you are smokin crack.
@robdux no offense but you shoot your bow up to 300 yards? ......and you can actually hit a critter? hmmm what kinda bow is that? and what rifle do you use for a 600 yard shot might i ask?
the holes are to keep it from puffing up and keeps it flat
Your body can absorb about 500 mg of Vitamin C at a time, so you could add a whole tablet. Body needs about 1000mg a day. Some of the Vitamin C tabs are flavored orange and might give it a bit of a better taste if you were gonna make it for yourself on a hunt'n trip or something. We cheat and put bacon grease in it too, taste a whole lot better =)
We have a company that makes that product without the egg and it's called Purity Hard Bread. It's produced here in Newfoundland Canada by Purity Factory which makes alot of different products one of which is a really good cracker. The hard bread is rock solid and is used to make fish n brews a traditional favorite here. Soaked overnight in water and then mixed with boiled potatoes and boiled salt fish. Little pieces of fried fat pork is added called scrunchions. MMMM delicious !!!!
4 cups flour (preferably whole wheat) 4 teaspoons salt Water (about 2 cups) Pre-heat oven to 375° F Makes about 10 pieces
Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Add just enough water (less than two cups) so that the mixture will stick together, producing a dough that won’t stick to hands, rolling pin or pan. Mix the dough by hand. Roll the dough out, shaping it roughly into a rectangle. Cut into the dough into squares about 3 x 3 inches and ½ inch thick. Great grandfathers recipe.
Nother good idea. The one with egg might not last as long on the shelf, only a year or so? Sugar also preserves as well as vitamin E and honey. That you got lots of? For a complete protein, how-about a wheat and bean (1/4) hard tack with, salt, honey or sugar and vitamin C.
The holes keep it from rising i think. When you said it will get them down the road to the fema camp i almost peed my self that's some funny stuff right there.
Excellent idea. Possibly, though, people passing by after weeks of lack of vitamins etc may have developed teeth weaknesses that will make it nearly impossible to eat those crackers.
@cdltpx yep I am sure your better livin off the land than people were 150 years ago that were happy to get a pice of hardtack... I wll be sure to get you directions to your nearest FEMA camp hahahaha
@dsarti1 I have 2 grannies one Indian the other white the white had a hard time Great Depression the Indian told of how poppa would go hunting and fishing and fed a multitude of people. 2day uncle catches enough fish for 6 people each day just a hook. Back then they didn't have the nuetrea either and WROL do you think we gonma give a shit about over hunting the gator. We have always been one foot in the past the other in the know. A few K 22 round we good. There are seasonal foods too berries..
I guess it's a flat bread. Also, maby some oatmeal added in, and someone mentioned sugar. If heat is no good for the vitamin C, then put it in the water, disolve it and mix it up, and salt and sugar may be needed in that also, for electrolytes, prevent dehydration.
maybe a little bit of sugar would be good as well. My grandma always says if the recipe takes salt then put in a bit of sugar and if the recipe takes sugar put in a little salt.
I'm assuming it is because even in small amounts it can make things taste alot better.
I have heard heat kills vitamine c !.. chocklat is a high sorce.. but all prosesed chocklat has none because almostall chocklat is prosesed with heat... ecept.. raw ca-caw ``beans``! Here !...
wikipidia.. vitamine c...aka Ascorbic acid..
and under the uses "section" it says its one of the least stabal.. and oxadises quickly ..as well as exposed to heat and light....
my mother told me that it was a cup of flour and a cup of water table spoon of salt. The Cracker was made for my grandfather for the Spanish /American War It was not allowed to bake to hard but a little bit softer The Storing it in Salt for the trip dry it out more It was Good in Hot Soup or stew on the Boat
Wow! Nice work. Bully beef and hard tack were desert rations for the English in WWII. from the accts I've read. Cooks would soak the hard tack and wrap it around the bully beef and bake to make a crude meat pie for variety. Hadn't hought of making hard tack for a BOB, but a good idea as you noted.Have a great New Year!

I think the reason for the holes is so that the water vapors have a place to escape and not cause the hardtack to become moist during the cooking.

And, "150 Year-Old Civil War Hardtack " It is amazing, the stuff looks as good as new.
Thanks again for another interesting vid.

The holes keep it from rising i think. When you said it will get them down the road to the fema camp i almost peed my self that's some funny stuff right there.
john762x39 1 year ago
Excellent idea. Possibly, though, people passing by after weeks of lack of vitamins etc may have developed teeth weaknesses that will make it nearly impossible to eat those crackers.

I believe the holes are put in the crackers in order to help break pieces off.

I guess it's a flat bread. Also, maby some oatmeal added in, and someone mentioned sugar. If heat is no good for the vitamin C, then put it in the water, disolve it and mix it up, and salt and sugar may be needed in that also, for electrolytes, prevent dehydration.

@Meathead36
Try ordering it in a restaraunt.

maybe a little bit of sugar would be good as well. My grandma always says if the recipe takes salt then put in a bit of sugar and if the recipe takes sugar put in a little salt.
I'm assuming it is because even in small amounts it can make things taste alot better.
Got any recipes for honey hardtack?

wikipidia.. vitamine c...aka Ascorbic acid..
and under the uses "section" it says its one of the least stabal.. and oxadises quickly ..as well as exposed to heat and light....
its under "uses" section on wikipidia!

my mother told me that it was a cup of flour and a cup of water table spoon of salt. The Cracker was made for my grandfather for the Spanish /American War It was not allowed to bake to hard but a little bit softer The Storing it in Salt for the trip dry it out more It was Good in Hot Soup or stew on the Boat

Fats go rancid pretty quick so I wouldn't add the egg if you plan on long term storage.

Wow!

You should start to make "liquid bread", or beer if you are really going to go old school.
