the X indeed means that he's unconscious I think, or at least wounded, so he did fight the goblins.
In fact looking at how "*siege*" has gone from the top of the screen I'd say he scared the goblins away!

I believe the giant is unconscious try looking at the battle log(r) to see if you could pinpoint why the hydra died too
