Japan attack Pearl Harbor because the USA cut of the Oil supplies to the country because of them attacking the China and Manila. They then want to make sure the USA didn't have a Navy to stop them. But the failure was that Japan didn't catch the carriers in the Habor. Battles at Midway and Wake Island decided the naval war against Japan when we took out most of their carriers.

dude pear harbor was not a war in and of its self, in fact the US had not yet joined WW2, the japanese knew that the US would not let them take over china, so they sought to criple the pacific fleet and they did, the japanese not only showed the naval and airforce powers but their tactical and engineering ingenuity. the battle at pearl harbor was a major blow to the US. they immediately declared war and japan and the Axis forces.
