Passing all ten spins was the right play. Assuming the whammy hits 1/6 of the time, there's only a 16.15% chance that Adrianna can avoid the whammy for 10 spins, which means Eric has an 83.85% chance to win.
If he takes one spin, the chances of avoiding the whammy increase to 19.38%, PLUS he takes on the 16.67% risk of hitting a whammy on his spin. That lowers his chances of winning to 64.47%.
This is why having a lot of spins isn't always a good thing depending on how many whammies you get in round 1. Any more than 6 spins into round 2 is usually more risk than reward.
now waitaminute... why wasn't this a 3-way tie where all three contestants get to return the next show? There's a clip out there where that happened before -- did they change the rules? Or does $0 trump someone else w 4$0 and 4 whammies?
I loved Peter but I had heard of his attitude problems with staff and at 2:55 it shows. He always seemed rude to them when they were having technical difficulties....
Lot the seperator split the wrong way but that was useless becase he didn't win anything.... He should have at least used once it wasnt much risk.............
If there was a PC version of PYL,there would of been a Pick A Sqaure added that would of allowed a player to select a square, minus whammies with or without spinning.
This was getting really messed up near the end. Peter was getting confused, the scoreboard operator was apparently getting confused as well. The last whammy at the end, its sound effect did not even sound till 5 seconds after it was hit, and the divider bar between the two started sliding the wrong way for a split second.
Never, has come close to happening, but it has not. Usually, if you got spins, everyone else whammied out, and you got 3 whammies yourself, the smart move is just to quit.
Because then he was free to pass that fistful of spins. He'd already won money on previous shows, so I guess winning more wasn't foremost in his mind. Surviving the game and trying again the next day was his goal.
Exactly. He had already won a bunch from previous shows, and the odds of hitting a whammy are 1 in 6, so if the odds are played right, she should hit a whammy in one of those 10 spins.
I felt so bad for Adriana because at the last moment (and a forced one), she was gaining quick ground and was on a lucky roll with big prizes and money, only to get a late whammy. What a waste of prizes and cash!
Also to add. This could be one time where picking a whammy on Pick-A-Corner could actually be a rational decision, rather than something to joke on, if it came up.
Sweet Merciful Crap!!! The weirdest game I have seen yet. This is why PYL was such a graet show. The unpredictablity of the board and very few games were ever decided early! I don't know what CBS was smoking canceling this show. This could have been on CBS for longer than the 3 years it was on. I live in Brooklyn, NY and WCBS aired this show at 12 pm. The death knell for all shows.
I'm guessing it was even worse when they moved the show to 4pm. By that time, I understand that only about 55% of stations were carrying the show in that timeslot. The rest had syndicated programs or local news. Putting it in the 4pm slot was the nail in the coffin for this show.
Haha! What a loser! I love this show! Call it crazy, but I always wanted the guys to win the game. It just seemed the women would get all crazy and acted so tough when winning and then the Whammy would bring them back to reality. I am not saying some of the men acted this way, it just seem women acted this way more when playing this game.
She was rushing the spins earlier, and it was working.
When you rush the spins, that is going purely by luck. If I was in her spot, I wait until you get a favorable board pattern (as few whammies as possible) and stop then.
Adriana should have waited to press on her 9th passed spin. I'd figured that if i pass 9 spins, he'll pass after he whammies and i'll have to spin them all with 3 whammies. Take a few.She wasn't greedy she HAD to take the 10 spins.
What I meant, wolfman is that AFTER he blew up with the 3rd whammy, he had 10 NON-compulsory spins since the "passed" or "mandatory" spins became "optional" ones after hitting the whammy. He should've spun one more time and hoped for some $, & then made her try to avoid blowing up with a 4th whammy for 9 spins in a row.
If he would have had fewer than 3 whammy's, that's what you'd want to do. BUT since both of them were one-whammy-and-you're-out, it made more sense to make her avoid the whammy for 10 spins than take a risk on whammying out.
If he passes 10 spins, he's got an 84% chance of seeing her whammy out (not including any free spins she would win during those mandatory 10). If he takes one spin, there's still a 16% chance he loses. PLUS, one fewer spin means the odds that she takes a whammy drops to 80%.
Winning some money on one spin would have been nice, but winning the game and coming back the next day and winning some money on a full game's worth of spins was the right play.
It didn't work out for him, but he still made the right play. If she had two whammys, then yes, the right play would've been to take one spin, get some cash and give her a number she has to beat. But with three whammys, the right play is to get her out of the game and play again tomorrow.
@TheBaldOneMpls But if Eric took 1 spin hit something plus a spin, then he'd still pass 10 spins just with some money (i seen somethin' similar when someone has a few spins one player is way in the front the other has $0 anyone remember Nancy? (before Gene Snyder's run?))
The only error was that it should have been 10 spins after the 1 whammy which was corrected. By rule, if you hit a whammy while playing with passed spins, all remaining passed spins go into the earned column. Kind of like a consolation for hitting a whammy. I think he was more afraid of hitting a 4th whammy and wanted to take his chances of coming back tomorrow with no $ than risk getting a 4th whammy with no chance of coming back.
If the "1 in 6" figure that midnightsociety gave for hitting a Whammy is right, for those who are interested, the chance of surviving that was just under 1 in 6 itself, meaning...not a bad strategy, though I'd have passed after ONE spin to get some money.
You're right! He pumped his fist! He knew that once he got off the hook, money or no money, all he had to do was pass what was left to her, have her whammy-out, and win the game.
Were I to ever be in that situation (having a ton of spins passed to me), I'd want to whammy early. Takes the pressure off, and actually really opens up my options.
LOL! At around 3:10, the woman has a look on her face like a big, heaping plate of bear claws was just put in front of her. She probably needed one at that time.

did you watch the whole clip? he had won the 2 shows before that one and was returning champion for 4 days, so he didn't win on that episode, but he did win $ on press your luck. $18000 and some change up to that point.
The ratio is 1 out of 6 spins before you hit a whammy. Even if you have no money, passing 10 spins to anyone almost guarantees you a win unless you're Michael Larsen. Good strategy.
I hated this case, but at least he had won money the day before already. Too bad for her, she was pulling it off without a choice, but she was so close to near victory.
4 whammies = loss. there was an episode of jeopardy where the returning champion wagered in a way that would bring back all 3 contestants if they were to answer correctly and wager all their money. he could have won the game if he wanted, but he chose to let the others decide their own fate. and they all returned with quite a bit of money.
since there was an error on the podium, that means he should have been forced to do the rest of his turns instead of being able to pass all the spins to her right? for the record, i think Eric's a jerk for doing that to her.
you are a moron. are you saying that he should not have passed them all to her just to be nice? they're on the show to win, not to make friends. so if an nfl team fumbles the ball and they're on a potential game winning drive, should the other team give the ball back because its the nice thing to do? you don't seem to have any competitive spirit.
no, he hit a whammy, and all the spins became earned spins. (That was according to the rules.) The error was # of spins. That just meant eric had only 10 spins to pass. He would have been allowed to pass either way. It's just a "clerical error". Adriana's score board was in error, also. Eric passsing is not jerky, just plain impersonal strategy.
He won that particular game for bragging rights. lol ...and to come back the next day.

I hated this case, but at least he had won money the day before already. Too bad for her, she was pulling it off without a choice, but she was so close to near victory.

Oh man that sucks for her! But he won $0.00
I want to play this game!

Why would they all not come back? I mean, officially, everyone's score was tied at zero. Is it because the other two whammied out?
dpsulliv 4 years ago
Yes, whammied-out players cannot come back, except due to an error in the gameplay

I believe when this was played on "Game Show Marathon", Kathy Najimy survived 7 spins passed from Tim Meadows and ended up winning the game.

Oh, that last passed spin he took (when he hit that Whammy, brought that tally down to 5, added to the earned total, gave him 10)
gameshowguy2000 5 years ago
I thought Eric passed Adriana 11 spins (per his scoreboard). How did it become 10?
gameshowguy2000 5 years ago
Watch it again. The 11 on Eric's podium was a mistake.
RandomManA 5 years ago
since there was an error on the podium, that means he should have been forced to do the rest of his turns instead of being able to pass all the spins to her right? for the record, i think Eric's a jerk for doing that to her.
roger62383 4 years ago
you are a moron. are you saying that he should not have passed them all to her just to be nice? they're on the show to win, not to make friends. so if an nfl team fumbles the ball and they're on a potential game winning drive, should the other team give the ball back because its the nice thing to do? you don't seem to have any competitive spirit.

Explain Jennie and Terry then, Mr. Smart
TheDragonBoss 3 years ago
no, he hit a whammy, and all the spins became earned spins. (That was according to the rules.) The error was # of spins. That just meant eric had only 10 spins to pass. He would have been allowed to pass either way. It's just a "clerical error". Adriana's score board was in error, also. Eric passsing is not jerky, just plain impersonal strategy.

It seems like Peter was getting upset with the scoreboard operator at one point.

Maybe not an idiot, cuz he had a strategy, and they could've all whammied out, so maybe he wasn't an idiot this match.
