depends on the version of the GTS. If you have a 320 or 640mb GTS witha G80 core the 8800GT is better. If you have a G92 cored 8800GTS 512MB then its faster.

The 8800gts 512 is more money for your buck. The 9800gtx is a little faster and also has more driver issues. As an owner of SLI 9800gtxs, I say get get 8800gts 512.

Be sure it's a 512mb which is the G92 chipset though, the 320 and 640 versions aren't so good.

No offense, but 1 year ago before the 8800 came out, people were talking about how your system sucks inless you got the 7800 GT or GTX. The nvidia 7 series is only a year old and was a "$600.00" card. Now that the new cards have come out, I got my 7900GT for 240 in March 07. It plays COD4 on MAX settings at 60 FPS. My setup duo E6400 (2.13ghz) and 3gb of ram (previously 1gb and ran at 60 fps)

I'm not dissing the 8800 series but you DO NOT NEED a card this powerful inless you are playing Crysis

You DO NOT get 60 fps on a 7900gt, or even close running SLI 7900gtx maxed out, even at 1024 resolution.

At 1280x1024 resolution on overclocked SLI 7900gtx cards which are a bit faster than a 7900gt, you average about 22 fps and you may get a rare spike around 60s for a second while staring at the ground. And this game is VERY SLI-friendly.

If you are truely running CoD4 at 60 fps, you are far from using max settings.

There have been benchmarks running a 7900gtx and they ran in the upper 20s. And a 7900gtx is a significantly faster card than a 7900gt.

Cod4 IS NOT that graphical. I suggest you go buy a new computer because your doing something wrong. The 8800 was released in Feb-March of last year. That means this game was STILL in development and the 7 series was the highest at the time. So its obvious thats why the 7 series CAN run it at max settings. I got what everyone else got for a framerate. Actually turning the settings down a little really makes the game a lot more playable.

You got it backwards.

Call of Duty 4 got reviewed using 7900gtx a few times. Got 30 fps at 1280 maxed out, which is about right for the first couple levels which aren't as demanding as some of the later levels which it gets ugly at.

I was actually able to run through the first few levels maxed out at 1600x1200 with SLI 7900gtxs, but a few levels in I had to turn that way down until I got an upgrade.
