@MW2mostwanted I've owned 2 Audi A6s, and recently traded a 2006 A6 for a brand new TDI....For a small car, it has the most upscale interior I've seen...There is nothing cheap about this car...The interior is on par with Audi.
and golfs are enganging to drive? Any FWD Hatchback that isn't a "hot version" is going to be "unengaging", and you speak as if the MK6 Golf looks interesting.
Uh, it didn't "start like a dream", morons, he had to hold the key on forward-ignition for a few seconds. My 1987 Peugeot 505 can start faster than that.
@Torquingdiesel have you ever heard of peugeots called the worlds most ulgiest, boring, and unenaging drives? they are ugly they are boring and my dad drove one and he fell asleep basically. I would get rid of it immediatley because you are going to be a laughing stock top gear hate peugeouts too
Why WOULDN'T it start? Man...americans really live in history, thinking that diesels are still loud, smokey, weak, crappy....while in fact they're superior to petrol engine in terms of everything.
@derbigpr500 The video is in Canada, not America. I live in America and don't know anyone who thinks that about diesels. The demand for diesels here by far exceeds the supply. I was at a used car dealership and they were completely sold out of all used diesels, and only had a couple brand new ones remaining, as not everyone has $27,000 to spend on a car, (which is what the remaining VW tdi's costed). If they brought the lupo tdi to the U.S., I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
@zuzulo56 My friend had a Nissan pickup with a diesel. He would cycle the glowplugs twice in cold weather. I always started. Everyday, he would have to boost a few Gassers that did not start.
That's kind of a ridiculous thing to say. Every type of piston engine generates a massive amount of waste heat, typically in the range of 60-80%. In a gasoline engine, you can think of it being about 20-20-20 wasted through the radiator, exhaust, and engine block. The only difference in a diesel is that the engine block generates much less heat because the fuel is ignited so much closer to top dead center of the stroke. Diesels are efficient BECAUSE they generate less heat.
@JonProce I didnt mention it in relation to its efficiency, only that if you would like to have a warm car to drive in the morning during the winter most gasoline driven cars would be better.
Diesel powered vehicles use the same thermostat regulator in the cooling system as their gasoline counterparts, that means the coolant flowing through the radiator of the vehicle is the same temperature as it would be in a gasoline vehicle. Your vehicles heating systems runs this same hot fluid through a smaller radiator within the vehicle, and your environmental system blows air across the radiator, and on to you. The system will generate the same warm air the gasoline variant will
@Danteii55 a lot of people don't realize that diesels take quite a while to warm up. Older diesels would circulate the coolant through the block right away, not sure if the new ones still do that. If they do, then count on a good hour or idling, or a solid twenty minute drive before you'll be able to feel 'heat'. I prefer diesels however in northern Ontario, a gas engine despite its inefficiency is much better for shorter drives. It's a shame that VW still uses timing belts on their diesels!
It wouldn't nessecarily take an hour or so of idling to warm up. The issue with a diesel is that they don't heat up at idle like a gas engine does. That being said however if you can bring the idle up (I run a programmer that does it for me when it's cold out) it isn't unreal to see a diesel up at operating temp in less than 10 mintues. Just my 2 cents though.
@Tankster2002 I don't have experience with VW's, but I own a few Sprinter service vans that accumulate a lot of miles. I generally service them myself to save on costs from MB dealers. I was testing my reefer truck, and with the reefer cooling shut off from the engine, at idle it took close to 50 minutes to reach operating temp. I have since installed a fast idle computer so it cuts warm up time in half, which is still close to half an hour. However, coolant capacity may play a role there...
@Tankster2002 YES! I can bring my Isuzu Elf up to operating temp in 10 minutes in cold weather by using the exhaust brake. If I don't use the exhaust brake, it takes a long time!
@Danteii55 Actually, as a diesel with a higher compression ratio in each cylinder to ignite the fuel, diesels create more internal heat than a gasoline engine. That's how it ignites the fuel without a spark.
I Lub my dub TDI.

If you look closely, you can see the block heater plug near the front left fog light. All Canadian Golf TDI comes with standard block heater.

But it's a disel, so it dosen't develop as much heat as a regular gasoline would have. Big downside with disel for those who drive in cold areas.
