It is a bummer that this clip is on here. Some places should just stay remote. I used to go to sand and never see anyone for days. Now it seems more and more people are going back there. It's too bad. I'll keep my secret spots off the web.
Sure, you can get to Sand by trail from Wanakena. If you feel like walking 11 miles one way. I'll stick to my way which requires only a 3 mile hike and some paddling. Sand lake is one of my favorite places in the 'dacks. Love those white pines on the esker!
That is Sand Lake and the virgin whtie pines are on the esker separating Sand and Rock Lake. I've been to this spot and the SW corner of Rock Lake, but couldn't find the esker trail. So wild!
This is Sand Lake...and those ARE old growth white pines. I spent a weekend there last year, hiked 15 miles through swamps to get there...it is very beautiful...but omg don't go in the summer the bugs are insane
No roads, railroads, and many lakes would be there if not for logging. While I don't believe in the cut out-and-get out method encouraged by government leases or sellbacks, sustained yeild practices had been in place for over a century in some parts of the Adirondacks. AND studies prove thinned evergreen stands reflect heat in winter, where cutting rainforests for wood products instead raises global temps, then there is the issue of jobs and tax revenue, NYS wants to stop paying land taxes on
While those trees are old, they are NOT "old growth." There are actually very little old growth trees left in the Adirondacks--most forests, even in the high peaks, were stripped bare by paper, lumber and tannery interests. Pagenstecker Park over on Palmer Ave. in Corinth, does in fact have a couple of true "old growth" Adirondack trees, and they are amazing. (*got that info from a retired conservation officer).
Sorry but I can't help you I live in the aderondacks but I have never been there it looks like it might be lake coldin but I don't think it can be because fog like that would not be on a mountain lake sorry.
Your are right !!! This is one of the most beautiful areas I know... and wild ! Used to go there before the blowdown... Since then, nature has really taken over and life is everywhere. So are flies in june... But then, nothing is free ! Still miss the Leary trail and the huge trees in High Falls though...
My wife and I got stuck back there for a day longer than we wanted to a few years back. It was raining really hard for a few days and there is a stream you have to cross to get there by Wolf Pond - well that stream swelled up and crossing it was IMPOSSIBLE! We went back a day later, it had stopped raining and the stream was then crossable again. 2 days of hiking back to Wanakena in one day - OUCH!
The Adirondacks are awesome...my family is all from there, but I'm only familiar with the part by Lake Champlain...it could be anywhere north of Albany and west of the lake. Sorry.

BTW Rock lake is the adjacent lake that lies on the other side of the ridge you see behind the misty water

I love how peaceful this is, especially with the sun illuminating the mist.

Wrong answer buddy - there ARE old growth forests remaining in the Five Ponds Wilderness where it was too remote for loggers to get to.

It could be Rock Lake, which is off Route 28 between Indian & Blue Mountain Lakes. I've only been on Rock Lake in the Winter so I can't be real sure.
