It's important to realize this was not "the Vatican" as such, but rather a dicastery or group that is associated with the Vatican. The distinction is important. The pope himself did not ratify or condone the message of this particular group, and often the pope, and the Magesterium, will disagree with the findings of such a group. Many times in Church history, a group like this has made a pronouncement, but later it was rejected by the teaching authority in the Church.

Many times in history, groups like this have made pronouncements which contradict official Church teaching and the Magesterium will officially reject their conclusions.

Catholic Americans in general have never really listened to the Pope, because they were cut off from the Church for years because travle by ocean took months. When word did get to them, they liberaly interpreted it to fit into their new lifestyles in America. American Catholics angered the Pope so badly that he wanted to send special Spanish Priests along with troops to force them to obey the Church, but England took issue with that. Whether or not that's true(I'll assume it is, although I don't know it to be fact) the main issue is that most priests are protected by the Vatican via Canon law; which is why no. 3 is important... Big hypocrites since Christian political parties all support free market capitalism. Many Christians support right-wing ideals, I have seen very little left-wing Christians. Most Christians support right-wing political parties.
Here in the Netherlands the Christian Democratic Appeal is right-wing so is the Reformed Political Party, which is very right-wing Christian ( Republican style ). The CDA used to be centrist, but became more right-wing in the last ten years.
