I'm Dutch and i have to say that this video is a little racist. It is full with stereotypes. Nowadays, we have a lot of immigrants who brought all kinds of food a, a lot of people live in big cities and are driving cars instead taking the bike. I've never been to a tulip 'field', neither does anyone i know. Windmills are rare in my city, i only know about one, outside the city in a village nearby. I live in a city with modern buildings, a big shoppingmall and we have industry.
I think this video is about Holland (the west) and not raelly about the Netherlands. I'm from Nijmegen, Gelderland in the east. But i like that they included some clips of De Efteling, thats a big part op my childhood. :)

@Sigmar900 We did nothing, that's the beauty of it. Anyways, if you seriously want to know about the history I suggest you start your search on different sites, preferably history oriented ones. I don't think there are many educational vids in English about the Dutch history.

@Sigmar900 Yes you CAN be too nationalistic imo. But I don't know where you get the idea from everyone hates on us. 99% of the time I get positive reactions when I say I'm dutch. Unless it's hardcore conservative biblefreaks hating on our socalled "socialist" system and our drug/abortion/euthanasialaws , but if they hate us it means we're doing something right. But I do hear foreigners say we come across as rude for being too open, direct and honest. Yet we're known for our tolerance.
@Sigmar900 But it's true a lot of people make fun of our druglaws and our legalized prostitution. Some actually think we're banging hookers all day long, walk on wooden shoes and smoke weed 24/7. But the fact is that allthough we are allowed to, we've got a lot less harddrugaddicts and stoners than any of our surrounding countries and the US. Our motto: it's better to legalize and regulate than ban and lose all control. Luckily a growing number of nations is following our example.

The main reason for dutch people trying to regulate EVERYTHING comes from the lack of REAL problems. The country panics everytime something happens because we're spoiled and we're used to our well organized government solving all our problems. It affected our resilience. Only 10-15 years ago the biggest national issue was dogpoo on the streets.

My parents came to Canada from Holland in the 50's. They were staunch members of the Dutch christian reformed church. I'm an atheist, but I'm wondering how strong the influence of the church is on the Dutch people today? It was certainly a strong influence on my parents. I rejected the religion at a young age because it seemed hypocritical and false to me. Also, the genesis stories just seemed too silly to be true, even when I was an 8 year old kid.
@8698gil Religion isn't very important anymore for quite a lot of Dutch; there's still significant Christian populations, but quite a lot are Atheist as well, about thirty percent. According to the CIA factbook (just google for it, should work. :P) the numbers are/were as such: Roman Catholic 30%, Protestant 20% (Dutch Reformed 11%, Calvinist 6%, other Protestant 3%), Muslim 5.8%, other 2.2%, none 42% (2006). :P
@8698gil To be honest, the influence isn´t that strong anymore. In the ´50´s it was part of who you was. Holland had four groups based on lifestyle and two of them are christian. So it was a big part of your life back then, but that isn`t anymore. When you go to the church now, it is just going there and connecting with that community. The influence on the society isn`t strong anymore. It is possibly even stronger in the USA now...

I really like Germany! Also the people there are really nice towards dutch people (atleast in the parts of germany i am a few times a year, the river 'Mösel' and, further in the country. Towards 'Oostenrijk/Österreich'.
My children & I loved this, we are from New Zealand (country south-east of Australia). I have some Dutch friends, but know very little about the netherlands. This helped a little to learn about the country and people. I have always liked the Dutch people and their fun & dry sense of humour (plus their HOT women doesn't hurt!).

@Sigmar900 Yes you CAN be too nationalistic imo. But I don't know where you get the idea from everyone hates on us. 99% of the time I get positive reactions when I say I'm dutch. Unless it's hardcore conservative biblefreaks hating on our socalled "socialist" system and our drug/abortion/euthanasialaws , but if they hate us it means we're doing something right. But I do hear foreigners say we come across as rude for being too open, direct and honest. Yet we're known for our tolerance.

@Sigmar900 But it's true a lot of people make fun of our druglaws and our legalized prostitution. Some actually think we're banging hookers all day long, walk on wooden shoes and smoke weed 24/7. But the fact is that allthough we are allowed to, we've got a lot less harddrugaddicts and stoners than any of our surrounding countries and the US. Our motto: it's better to legalize and regulate than ban and lose all control. Luckily a growing number of nations is following our example.

@Sigmar900 But there's a lot of things in my country that could be better, like decreasing the massive amount of rules for every little thing. The main reason for dutch people trying to regulate EVERYTHING comes from the lack of REAL problems. The country panics everytime something happens because we're spoiled and we're used to our well organized government solving all our problems. It affected our resilience. Only 10-15 years ago the biggest national issue was dogpoo on the streets.

My parents came to Canada from Holland in the 50's. They were staunch members of the Dutch christian reformed church. I'm an atheist, but I'm wondering how strong the influence of the church is on the Dutch people today? It was certainly a strong influence on my parents. I rejected the religion at a young age because it seemed hypocritical and false to me. Also, the genesis stories just seemed too silly to be true, even when I was an 8 year old kid.

According to the CIA factbook (just google for it, should work. :P) the numbers are/were as such: Roman Catholic 30%, Protestant 20% (Dutch Reformed 11%, Calvinist 6%, other Protestant 3%), Muslim 5.8%, other 2.2%, none 42% (2006). :P

@8698gil To be honest, the influence isn´t that strong anymore. In the ´50´s it was part of who you was. Holland had four groups based on lifestyle and two of them are christian. So it was a big part of your life back then, but that isn`t anymore. When you go to the church now, it is just going there and connecting with that community. The influence on the society isn`t strong anymore. It is possibly even stronger in the USA now...

Beautiful countryside, picturesque cities, awesome beer, freidnly and intelligent people and they actually know what a BIKE is!none of this can be said (well maybe apart from the nice countryside here and there) for the US (yes I lived there too). My children & I loved this, we are from New Zealand (country south-east of Australia). I have some Dutch friends, but know very little about the netherlands. This helped a little to learn about the country and people. I have always liked the Dutch people and their fun & dry sense of humour (plus their HOT women doesn't hurt!).

Hell, i laughed my ass off when i saw that dude from west coast customs come to berlin and started another shop. He fought that he could force the american way upon the geman workers by sending that large bubba on patrol, so see if the germans work hard enough, and verbaly kick their butt, and demand that they work late every night. Being American myself, I also acknowledge my country's problems, the leaders especially. However, no country is without problems, and our country's responsibilities in global affairs is undeniably large. But we have also achieved great things, despite our flaws. Please try to keep that in mind before applying the American stereotypes.
