Yeah, after the GFR played their asses off, Terry Knight, the greedmonger confiscated the bands equipment with the help of NY sherriffs. Can you believe the band had sold 10 million records alone from 1969 -71, plus played Shea Stadium, and Terry Knight still had the band on a $350 a week salary? It's a wonder the band could put on a such a high energy show, knowing that Knight was waiting in the wings, to take their wages for the show and equipment. Fortunately, the band made money 73 - 76.

Grand Funk was Pure Fun. They made people happy. The music was so good. They were my first favorite band after the Beatles broke up. The first Grand Funk Live album was tremendous. E Pluribus Funk was on my turntable constantly, and "Grand Funk" (the Red cover) was just loaded with good stuff. When I hear music like this, I feel like I'm 18 again. (And 18 was long, long ago for me.)
This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.
People are still in awe of this great but misunderstood American Band!
@PackedFunk I always read something like "misundertood", WHY? I mean who misunderstood them and reason. I love their music by the way. I yes, I do not speak English and very few people do in my country however they were popular there back in the early 70's.
Look at Mark Farner's hair curling in front: the beginning of the stress Terry Knight put them on a few weeks before this concert while taking all royalties from them.
I noticed that too. He also looks real thin in the face. Much stress at that time. Their instruments were confiscated after this show by sheriffs dept. & Knight.
@PackedFunk Oh, it was just after this show? I thought the real story was that the MSG gig was supposed to occur one month before this, but GFR got confiscated all their material at their rehearsal in MSG by Knight so that they had to cancel the show and report it some weeks later.
they are my musical inspiration, I play drums, and when I play their covers I feel very alright, but so high. GFR Rules the world of Hard Blues an Rock.
saw Grand Funk 3 times back in the day. Saw Mark the last time in Bossier CIty, La at Cowboys god rockin, still great the best of the best groups ever
My Mom used to come in my room when I had this on turn table playing it as LOUD as I could. She'd say "What in the HELL are you listening to" hahahahaha I said Mom "Thats Mark Don & Mel." LOL Moms didnt "get it"!
Gotta say though...liked them as a three piece much more. Like so many groups, the original lineup might have (to themselves) branched out, developed musically...but gimme the raw passion of early versions of so many groups. This still kicks ass though lol...
When they were in the studio Mark played all the guitar keyboard parts and wrote most of their stuff, when I saw them Mark was doubling on keyboard and guitar, great show, but I have to say there was a bit of a hole in the rhythm when he went from guitar to keyboad and then back to guitar, like in Mean Mistreater, but when they got a fulltime keyboard player the style changed,Loco Motion? What was that? American Band was OK but the Funk was GONE. But they were an Mark still the Feces, Dertoit !

There's "Music." Then there's "Music Business." The two have nothing at all in common. Most of the money boys who run the music industry don't even like music.
Farner and GFRR deserve credit where credit is due.
They were smeared by the music critics at Rolling Stone and everyone in the business piled on.... the most disgusting display of elitism and pandering to the power brokers ever seen.
When Mark tried to break their contract the band was blackballed and over the years bankrupted by the business moguls.
Sorry to hear that Mark is feeling his age .... the guy deserves a break.

....I really like this song and I think the bands' great. But I have a question. And forgive me, cause it's absurd. But english is not my first language. And I've never heard the word "reefer" before. What is that? Since I don't know the meaning of that word, I don't know if this is a lovesong or what. Sorry for the question. But I just feel moronic liking a song, and not understanding it. Will anybody help me?
A real funked up version. Love the crowd scenes! Craig's clavinet and organ are great on this. I love this as well as the earlier, rawer version from '69.
Note Mark's fly at the end is not in the upright and locked position...also Terry Knight confiscated all equipment after the show in ongoing legal battle...Mark left out "nickel bag" in song and hummed as this was an "anti-drug" benefit...
I don't mind some of their so called commercial stuff, but man, the first two albums are REVOLUTIONARY, in a league of their own. Rick Rubin copped his sound from the red album, word.
and you didnt like the locomotion? what a douche nozzle, that song rocked dude,, i was 15.we wore that song out on jukeboxes..blistering solo by mark, and you can hear todd rundgren singing background vocals..shitty you say? did you just take a whole bottle of stupid pills ?
Great band!!!! Unstoppable groove. Great Guitarist, Great Drummer, great Bassplayer. great amps (well the ones in the 60's and 70's were good, the stuff I saw and heard them on later was crapola) and fantastic songwriting. one of the best Bands of all time. They deserve more focus and attention in the media for their music. Real RocknRoll. listen to this again and you will know why you also Love the Bellrays!
Love the version on the double Live LP. Never saw them live in the old days, but saw them here in San Diego a tthe Del Mar fair a # of years ago withthe reformed original lineup. great show!
The addidition of the organ is pretty chill. But any later in the career is when they started getting real cheesey....such as We're an American Band.......it's not bad, but i never care to listen to it, i love the jam session early three piece jam sessions.
You must've read some other posts of mine maybe on the Illuminati, huh? No matter. GFR's quality
is in the eye of the beholder so to speak, independent of nationality. But just because they're good doesn't mean the U.S. is. Plenty of great/lousy bands hail from screwed up countries just as plenty of great/lousy ones hail from good ones. Usually it depends on whether the person playing can afford the practice time and the instruments. Simple as that. Dependent more on Economics than Politics.
Talk about being in the groove on this one. Awesome. I mean I prefer Purple (with Ritchie Blackmore more than Steve Morse although I like Morse too)for their technical abilities, and more Classical influenced melodies, but I love GFR too especially for their soulful grooving. One of the few bands who were funky
I am in this show LOL - in the audience - go to 2:58 to 3:02.
You will see 2 guys on the left standing on their seats dancing and clapping with their hands in the air. My buddy is the guy with the beard on the left with the Rolling Stones 'mouth' T-Shirt and I am on the right of him in the pale red T-Shirt dancing and clapping LOL. I can't believe this I was 20 years old. As soon as I saw the date I knew I was at this show. Talk about mind blowing LOL.
Wow YES - Hey I have to thank you for posting this - I just stumbled upon it by chance and knew I was at the show and and an incredible experience being there. GFR was my favorite band at that time and it was the first time I saw them. I remembered we were going nuts and on our seats dancing but to actually see them zoom in on us flipped me out completely. I feel like part of history now LOL - Thanks again!!!
Wow that must me amazing to come back and re-live this. I dont think ive met somebody on youtube thats seen one of these live videos of a classic band like the funk back in the day thats lived to say hey i was at that concert, and that can actualy point themselves out. You my friend are a badass
LOL...thanks very much LittleM...Yes it certainly was quite a trip to literally stumble upon this particular concert video on here and actually see myself in it. One further note...this show was also televised shortly after the concert on tv on what was called 'In Concert'. I had totally forgotten about that, but after seeing the video here remembered that as well. It's almost 36 years now...whew!
You are a lucky man though. I wish i would have been at this concert, let alone this era, when the music was real, and the people got into it and the artist were dedicated to their music. What do i have to look forward to nowadays ?
I can hardly imagine how you feel having missed the era I grew up in. The early 70s was a fantastic time. We had great fun going to concerts when Classic rock was forming and developing. Every weekend we made trips to concerts near and far. You are correct - there is nothing like what we experienced out there now. It is very interesting to me to find young people discovering our time of music and their opinions of it. We saw the great artists many of whom are still acive in their prime.
Yeah ive been to a couple of classic rock concerts like for instance the who and lynyrd skynyrd. But you rarely find them in one peice any more. Its usualy just the lead singer or a new singer and the rest of the band. Man i bet things were a hell of alot different in the seventies.
Very true - it's not the same -so many bands changed line ups or had original muscians depart from the band. One missing piece changes an entire band. Yes it was a bonding experience for us in the early 70s. Best years of my life. We really had great fun discovering new bands in their infancy.
i was 15 in 71 so didnt get to concerts, but dam i loved the music, thru records, radio etc....i do miss that era, and i still think i live in that time, there was nothing like nor will there ever be the 70s again,
Yes the 70s were a unique and great time to grow up in. I was 19 in 1971 and there were concerts every weekend at a theater 10 minutes away from me. The tickest were priced at around $7 -$15 lol. Madison Square Garden had great bands play there and Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ also had concerts every weekend - good days...we got to see emerging bands play in small concerts halls before they became huge arena acts.
wow that sounds like rams head live here in baltimore,md now, tix at max are like $30 and get to see sooooo many great bands, just starting out, or established, just this past thursday saw puddle of mudd, no older bands yet but its a great intimate setting. nothing can ever compare to our music of the late 6os early 70s
I was 16 in 71 and lived 6 miles from Shea Stadium when GFRxR did their historical concert. My dad wouldn't let me go to the show....all my friends went as I watched a live clip on the 10:00 news and listened to my dad say, "look at these hippie bastards making noise."
thats funny that is almost what my dad would have said, dad loved bluegrass and country and that was that lol my parents never tried to keep any of us from listening to what we wanted to, but dont let them hear it ! lol i do miss being a teen, being single and the music and the times. its so nice to relive it thru these videos
Best rock band of all time here! This is ROCK AND ROLL HISTORY! Everyone visiting PackedFunk's channel..please sign the petition to induct these guys into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Just scroll to the top, click on the online petition link..and you are there!
The 'red album' should be in everyone's rock collection. Awesome. When I saw it live at Stony Brook, the bass guitar was the loudest bass I'd every heard up to that point. Great concert!
Thank God somebody recorded this show!! I saw them in MSG in 1974 and Suzi Quarto opened the show! They were what has been forgotten today, RAW!! in your face and LOUD!! NO RAP NO CRAP! New York loved Grand Funk Railroad!
Hi there PackedFunk! I had a very terrible bad day today. Crying 'n shit. Just watching this was enough to LIFT ME UP! Thanks for all your postings brother!
That's right big. That record still stands today 37 years later. Shea Stadium is being torn down in Oct. of this year. Tim Gunkel of The N.Y. Mets placed my Shea Stadium video on permanent archives for the history of Shea & is being shown at Mets Games this summer.
congrats on the video bud thats great news. And thanks for spearheading the petition drive for T greatest Hard rock rock band since Blue Cheer. {iam a Blue Cheer fan also.}
Oh my god it is so cool when Craig's organ grinding (it's sounds better than "Craig's organ!!!") first comes out loud and clear shortly into this song. GFR were such a cool outfit, my fave years are the Craig era. Mark is the proto guitar hero bad ass mutha!!!!! Rock on People!!!!!
Farner & co. giving a lesson on how a live performance is suppose to be.
Is there a better front-man than Mark Farner? If there is, I haven't seen him. And I've seen enough to know.
These early Grand Funk Railroad 2 plus hour shows set the standard & are legendary.
Many people write me telling me they were at some of these shows & are still to this day in awe of of the energy, talent, & passion put into these performances.
Just some of my thoughts as I watch this great performance again.
ma cazzo qua si ballava !! questo è un concerto !! I want to come back to the past and take the flying harmonic!!

I wouldn't say the power trio was dying. The
band Cream broke up because they them
selves wanted to in 1968, and Grand Funk
came out in about 1969. Both bands cheated
on their "studio" recordings, adding a rhythm
guitar to their songs to make it sound like
a 4 piece band.

Whoever made that remark about Nugent ...
Farner a proto Nugent?
Ted Nugent was fronting the Amboy Dukes for years before GFRR hit the scene.
This is not slight against Farner or the GFRR ... but .... Nuge was in 1967 and remains to this day an asskicking guitarist and frontman.
Mark Farner ... not in the same league... period.

This was not one of their better versions, not crazy about Marks lead and the organ has GOT TO GO! Besides that....FUNK ON!
fattdaddy3755 3 years ago
Note Mark's fly at the end is not in the upright and locked position...also Terry Knight confiscated all equipment after the show in ongoing legal battle...Mark left out "nickel bag" in song and hummed as this was an "anti-drug" benefit...

I don't mind some of their so called commercial stuff, but man, the first two albums are REVOLUTIONARY, in a league of their own. Rick Rubin copped his sound from the red album, word.

Dependent more on Economics than Politics.
pokbacsi100 3 years ago
Talk about being in the groove on this one. Awesome. I mean I prefer Purple (with Ritchie Blackmore more than Steve Morse although I like Morse too)for their technical abilities, and more Classical influenced melodies, but I love GFR too especially for their soulful grooving. One of the few bands who were funky
without being a funk band per se. Heavy Rock
meets funk way before the Chili Peppers did it.
pokbacsi100 3 years ago 2
Thanks for a semi-positive response with not putting down the Greatest Country in the World...The United States Of America.

LittleM1021 3 years ago 3
LOL...thanks very much LittleM...Yes it certainly was quite a trip to literally stumble upon this particular concert video on here and actually see myself in it. One further note...this show was also televised shortly after the concert on tv on what was called 'In Concert'. I had totally forgotten about that, but after seeing the video here remembered that as well. It's almost 36 years now...whew!
JJackAL52 3 years ago
You are a lucky man though. I wish i would have been at this concert, let alone this era, when the music was real, and the people got into it and the artist were dedicated to their music. What do i have to look forward to nowadays ?
LittleM1021 3 years ago
I can hardly imagine how you feel having missed the era I grew up in. The early 70s was a fantastic time. We had great fun going to concerts when Classic rock was forming and developing. Every weekend we made trips to concerts near and far. You are correct - there is nothing like what we experienced out there now. It is very interesting to me to find young people discovering our time of music and their opinions of it. We saw the great artists many of whom are still acive in their prime.
JJackAL52 3 years ago 3
Yeah ive been to a couple of classic rock concerts like for instance the who and lynyrd skynyrd. But you rarely find them in one peice any more. Its usualy just the lead singer or a new singer and the rest of the band. Man i bet things were a hell of alot different in the seventies.
LittleM1021 3 years ago
Very true - it's not the same -so many bands changed line ups or had original muscians depart from the band. One missing piece changes an entire band. Yes it was a bonding experience for us in the early 70s. Best years of my life. We really had great fun discovering new bands in their infancy.
Just sent you Jimi Hendrix great song 'Hey Joe'.
JJackAL52 3 years ago 2
i was 15 in 71 so didnt get to concerts, but dam i loved the music, thru records, radio etc....i do miss that era, and i still think i live in that time, there was nothing like nor will there ever be the 70s again,
alwayssme 3 years ago
Yes the 70s were a unique and great time to grow up in. I was 19 in 1971 and there were concerts every weekend at a theater 10 minutes away from me. The tickest were priced at around $7 -$15 lol. Madison Square Garden had great bands play there and Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ also had concerts every weekend - good days...we got to see emerging bands play in small concerts halls before they became huge arena acts.
JJackAL52 3 years ago
wow that sounds like rams head live here in baltimore,md now, tix at max are like $30 and get to see sooooo many great bands, just starting out, or established, just this past thursday saw puddle of mudd, no older bands yet but its a great intimate setting. nothing can ever compare to our music of the late 6os early 70s

I was 16 in 71 and lived 6 miles from Shea Stadium when GFRxR did their historical concert. My dad wouldn't let me go to the show....all my friends went as I watched a live clip on the 10:00 news and listened to my dad say, "look at these hippie bastards making noise."
fattdaddy3755 3 years ago 2
thats funny that is almost what my dad would have said, dad loved bluegrass and country and that was that lol my parents never tried to keep any of us from listening to what we wanted to, but dont let them hear it ! lol i do miss being a teen, being single and the music and the times. its so nice to relive it thru these videos

The 'red album' should be in everyone's rock collection. Awesome. When I saw it live at Stony Brook, the bass guitar was the loudest bass I'd every heard up to that point. Great concert!
