The spider is female. Spiders are female dominated, so no male spider could be that big or aggresive.

It bothers me when people say something about something when I know for a fact that it's not true; in this case, durden77 said "he" or "him" about the spider that cannot possibly be male. The small spiders seen later in the game are more likely to be male.
